IVDD concerns for our beloved breed
I don’t know if anyone else is questioning IVDD like I am. It seems like there are more and more cases every single day which is very alarming. A good FB friend of mine has a gorgeous frenchie dog that came down with this awful disease which hit close to home for me which got me questioning things and if there is anything that can be done to minimize this by breeders. We have had 4 litters with our frenchies and really enjoy the process as a family. We kept two gals from our last litter to possibly breed. We did the proper initial genetic testing and everything was normal and they have nice structure. We decided to take another step and get an X-Ray of the Spine which cost about $350. I am so glad we decided to do this because the Doctor found malformations in both of their spines and said they would not be good candidates to breed. So we got them both spayed (we also checked our other 3 frenchies and their spines are good). My real point here is we really need more checks done by breeders to ensure they are not making the breed worse and spreading bad genetics and even worse heartbreak to dogs and their families. You cant see a spine and even if a dog has the best structure in the world that doesn’t mean their spine is good to breed. Now having said that they can still get IVDD but won’t be predisposed to have issues. I would also recommend others to do X Rays even to see if your dog is at greater risk of this happening. Since we found out we have put more safeguards around our house to minimize a spinal injury. I know if a breeder told me their dogs had this test done and we’re not predisposed to this I would pay more money for this dog and I would want your dog over others. I am just hoping some breeders read this and think about possibly getting this X-Ray done if they truly love the breed than I would hope they would consider doing this.
