Even though our weekly sterilisation drive with the amazing Cape of Good Hope SPCA has been postponed for several months due to staff and funding issues, we have still been trying to make a difference to the animals of the Dunoon township in Cape Town.

This is one example and one of many we will start to share with our followers. A gentleman called Steve, who has Amy's number (one of the founders of the group) said he could not keep his dog anymore and the dog needed to go from Dunoon as his landlord doesn't want to see his dog in his yard. He then asked for assistance as he wanted to surrender it.

He was walking around Table View not knowing who to take the dog to, but he knew he could not leave it in Dunoon for safety reasons. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA had said they would collect the dog from a local vet if he could take it there. Amy also shared Cheryl Lyn's Rescue Organisation details to Steve, to see if they could help as Steve was not answering his phone for some time so it was not confirmed where the dog had gone.

On this journey, Steve reached out to Chris who he works for occasionally. Steve had agreed to keep the dog safe instead of at the vet's until the SPCA could collect it from him. Steve then shared Cheryl Lynn's contact details and an arrangement was then made that she would take the dog into her shelter as she had space.

We are so happy to have played a part in helping this dog to safely leave Dunoon and hope he gets adopted very soon! We love that the owner Steve knew he could not just leave the dog to roam in Dunoon despite his landlord not wanting the dog on the property anymore, and he knew this doggy needed to go to a place of safety. So for that, we commend you Steve for choosing to make an effort and ensure this dog ended up in the right hands and in a safe and loving place.

URGENT!!! PLEASE SHARE FAR AND WIDE!!!!

African Tails was alerted today about a small cream-colored dog that was taken off someone selling him in a Woolworths bag in Dunoon. Sadly, by the time we got there, he escaped from the person's home who found him. In the meantime, his owners, who live in Goodwood was located.

His name is Spud and he is a small neutered male dog with a floppy ear. We are desperate to reunite him with his owners.

Please can you share this with everyone you know in Dunoon. Reward of R1500 will be offered for his safe return.

URGENT! Caylin Sass from Atlantis woke up yesterday to find her brother took her beloved cat Stormy and dumped her in an undisclosed location. He “said” he took her to Dunoon and she ran to a farm. This is one of the local dogs who used the clinic recently when he wasn't feeling well. His owner took him to the mobile clinic when he wasn't eating and received some medication for a low price. He is now doing much better! 😃💗

Tomorrow it's back! Yes, that's right the wonderful mobile clinic for animals ran by the utterly fabulous is back in Dunoon!

So please tell everyone you know in Dunoon and even those who live in the surrounding areas - all are welcome who cannot afford private vets. No animal should suffer, so if your animal needs an assessment please come to the SPCA mobile clinic in Dunoon tomorrow!

Please tell everyone you know that this Friday the mobile animal clinic will be in Dunoon township, Cape Town from 10 am until 11.30 am to help people see an animal welfare assistant for a reasonable price or donation.

This clinic offers many great services and is vital for people whose animals are feeling unwell and who want to find out what is wrong and get some medication.

They do not offer sterilisations on this day but please get in touch with us to add your dog or cat to our waiting list for our sterilisations to resume here in 2023.

Also: The last date for the mobile clinic for 2022 will be 15th December. The SPCA will be back in January 2023 - we are waiting to confirm from what date.

As many of you know, our weekly sterilisations have been offline for 4 months now - but whilst we sort that situation out, we have some great news: African Tails have taken over our Dunoon pet sterilisation waiting list where we had 27 animals listed! This is part of their collaboration with the City of Cape Town-funded mass sterilisation project.

Dunoon was highlighted as an important area to work in for this because there is not a lot of regular support here for the animals. We are, however, still extremely grateful that the Cape of Good Hope SPCA come every Friday with their mobile animal clinic. However, they do not currently offer sterilisations and their is no fixed clinic here for owners to visit with ease (who often do not have transport). This is why it is important we get our group back to doing them weekly in conjunction with the SPCA every Tuesday. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis it would be great to get a CoCT-sponsored animal welfare clinic based in/just outside Dunoon. Many pet owners from local unresourced areas would visit it.

In the meantime, we are thrilled to have African Tails work through our list, and it builds such good relations with the people in Dunoon - showing them we came back and remembered their animals. Without something so simple as trust, it actually reduces how many people sterilise their pets in places like Dunoon.

It's been two months since we last carried out our Dunoon animal sterilisation project in conjunction with the wonderful .

We are still "offline" in that regard because we haven't been able to find suitable staff and because now, we do not have the donors we used to. We understand people's financial situations change and we want to thank everyone who has helped sponsor us for the last two years to sterilise many animals in Dunoon (approximately 200 at the time of writing this). The money here has gone directly to staff, people from Dunoon who needed it. The SPCA covered the bill largely for the sterilisations with owners donating when they can. We are so grateful beyond words for the SPCAs help here!

We now urgently need to find new donors and staff. If you know of anyone please send us a DM or email [email protected]. We cannot also hire new staff without a solid financial stream of donations. We also want to thank those who are continuing to donate whilst we get sorted again. As we are not giving up! We've been here before!

Also, if you are an organisation that wants to help work with us to solve our staff issue (and/or financial issue to pay the staff) - please let us know! We are very happy to collaborate! 💙

NB: please also remember that the SPCA mobile clinic is still operational every Friday morning in Dunoon - public holidays tbc - so please share that with everyone! (See second photo). 🙏

Update: our project has had to pause for the last few weeks since Luleka (featured in this video ❤️) found a new job.

Luleka was only with us for a few weeks, but she is missed greatly! She was not only our driver but also helped source and sign up animals in Dunoon each week to get sterilised with the .

Recently, we were so lucky to be chosen as a beneficiary for 5 dog kennels from the incredible Purple Kennel Project - Cape Town!

Two of our team, Luleka and Lwazi, went to collect the kennels directly and dropped each one off individually to their happy new furry owners.

Eight beautiful township doggies were sterilised this week! Thank you for performing the sterilisations at a very low rate for the owners of the animals here in Dunoon.

Why do we ask the owners to contribute something, even if it is something really small? Because it not only shows that this owner values the animal and understands caring for an animal isn't free, it also shows commitment.

We are grateful for our team signing up these eight animals this week and ensuring they were not only taken to the SPCA meeting point but also back home safely, when they dropped them off again two days later. Two unwanted dogs were also surrendered this week. So we had a successful week in an area that would have otherwise not received this help if it wasn't for our team. 🐾💚

This week our team managed to sterilise 9 animals in Dunoon township! 🥰 The final photo is of 3 puppies who were also surrendered by their owner on Tuesday when our team did the sterilisation collection.

Surrendering animals to the SPCA, who help us with our animal sterilisations each week, is the best way to prevent unwanted animals ending up into the hands of animal abusers or people who simply don't have the means or knowledge to truly care for them properly, therefore causing neglect.

We are so grateful and proud to work with the and would love more people to follow or donate to their cause - by supporting them you are supporting non-profit groups like us who rely on their important services.

We are so pleased to assist the Dunoon Humane Education Group there ...a fairly young organization who are really doing great things and much needed outreach work in the area. They are working hand in hand with the SPCA and have employed animal loving individuals living in the township to identify dogs that can join their weekly sterilization schedule ... we hope to assist those same dogs with a kennel!

Our team had their work cut out last week; the rain ☔️ was so heavy in Dunoon ... it was flooding the streets due to terrible infrastructure, whilst they tried to collect all the animals booked in for sterilisation.

Our team did great and collected all 6 animals however! 👏🏻

However, the owner of the first dog pictured received a tragic call the very next day; his dog had parvo and the SPCA needed to know what he wanted to do. The owner decided to humanely end the dogs suffering. If it wasn’t for our team signing up animals for sterilisation that day - would this haven been another animal that went under the radar and who didn’t receive vet care immediately? As that scenario is one that happens a lot unfortunately. The owner was devastated however. So RIP puppy dog 🐾 💔

The female dog with teats had also recently had puppies - this was her last litter and the remaining puppies were surrendered to the SPCA in Grassy Park.

Please tell everyone who works or lives in Dunoon that the Cape of Good Hope SPCA mobile clinic will be visiting today from 10:00 am - 11:30 am outside the Recreation Hub.

This is right next to library in Dunoon on Waxberry Street. If your animal is sick or needs tick/flea treatment - then this is the affordable option for treatment!

Remember it is illegal to not take your sick animal to a vet!

The youth are South Africa’s solution to a country without animal abuse one day. Which is why humane education projects are so so important from young!

Teaching children how to care for animals, helps them to care for animals as adults - whilst also nurturing compassion and empathy that transfers to how they care for people.

Humane education is therefore not only great for our animals friends but also our human friends 🐾 😁 🐶

Do you know the owner of this dog? The dog was found close to Dunoon, wandering and lost and a kind person picked her up. She has recently had puppies so we MUST find the puppies so they survive as they need her milk! Please get in touch with Melkbos Animal Care if you have any information! 💔

Miguel, the doggy's rescuer, updated us that he's been working with some awesome young people in Dunoon to locate her puppies, if any. So far, there's a high probability that she's been abandoned by her owners and they've taken her pups. Always a sad scenario to contemplate. But, she is doing super well so far, in a great mood, is very comfortable, has her own little jacket on, and sleeping in a bed with these kind humans 😅💜.

While they wait for more info to come in, they're focusing on nursing Mum back to full health with vet checks and neutering on the cards soon. Miguel is working with other fab people to ensure that she'll never have to go back to a sad way of life again.

EXTREMELY URGENT: PUPPIES NEED TO BE LOCATED.

Last night a wonderful man stopped on the main road in Dunoon and picked up this stray.

It turns out that she is lactating a lot!
And there HAS to be puppies somewhere who are likely homeless and without food and protection.

The rescuer, Miguel, is asking for volunteers to assist in going back to where mommy was found to look for her babies. Or, if you recognise this dog and KNOW where her puppies are, please LET HIM AND US KNOW?

We are BACK! 👏🏻 thank you everyone for your support and patience whilst we found two new team members.

It’s been a tough few weeks and is always stressful finding new staff and training them, but we did it! Our staff successfully sterilised 5 animals this week together too!

Five more dogs were sterilised this week by our team in collaboration with the Cape of Good Hope SPCA! 👏🏻

Sterilisation is one of the most important aspects to fixing the pet overpopulation issue that burdens South Africa.

Sterilisation also helps the dogs and cats to become healthier, reducing the risk of certain concerns and also reducing aggression.
