JAMES Ponsonby has a long-range plan to win one of Australia’s most unusual events - and hopes to be able to make a double-barrelled bid.

The 4600m Jericho Cup – to be run at Warrnambool on December 1 – is the longest flat race in the country, and the Hawkesbury trainer moved a step closer to getting back there when Semper Fortis took the Riverina Cup (2500m) at Wagga on Sunday. SEMPER FORTIS quickly made us forget his last run with an easy win at Wagga Wagga yesterday.

JAMES Ponsonby’s move to Hawkesbury just over 12 months ago has been well and truly vindicated.

The former harness racing trainer/driver didn’t waste time posting his first win as a provincial throughbred trainer just after setting up shop when successful with Tour Of Duty at Bathurst on June 6 last year.

Fast forward to a new season, and Ponsonby’s victory with Semper Fortis at Wagga on Monday was his 15th in 2023-24, almost doubling last season’s tally. A bad draw, left us sitting three wide. Remaining calm, jockey Jay Ford let the horse get comfortable, pulling the trigger as late as possible to get the horse a head ahead of the field. An encouraging run from a horse that generally prefers a further distance.

Thursday 25th of April ~ ANZAC Day ~ Bathurst Thoroughbred Racing

3 year old gelding by Ocean Park out of the dam Lady Royale.

Winning at only his second start, Drunken Sailor was expertly ridden by jockey Matthew Cahill. Riding to instructions, to sit back and take all the short cuts, which he did, perfectly.

A cheap buy at $1,250, too cheap to sell others into, James gifted his mother, Keryn’s mother and his brother, a share in the horse. Today, they all got a present. ❤️💛🐎
