Losing a pet is like no other loss on the planet. The unconditional love of an animal is something that that cannot even be put into words.

I was recently contacted by a few people who asked me if I was familiar with Ruby the Doberman (Rubydooby Do) and her owner Charles. They told me that Charles had just lost his beloved Ruby to DCM and asked me if I could do a tribute piece to honor her.

It didn't take me long to figure out why so many people loved sweet Ruby. She was one of the most beautiful dogs or animals or... anything I have ever seen in my entire life. I'm so sorry for your loss Charles. I hope you get to see this and I hope it brings you little peace and maybe even a smile.

Rest in Peace Ruby.

“To love a rescuer you must love all of her. You must love the scars covering her body from panicked and hurt animals she was trying to help. You must love her fractured heart, that has been broken so many times she no longer even takes the time to mend the pieces.

To love a rescuer, you must embrace her grit and determination, and know that although she fights a war she can never win, she can and does win a few battles. You must love the tears she will shed over those she lost. You must give her comfort that she refuses to accept, as she blames herself for things she could have never foreseen.

To love a rescuer you must acknowledge the rage she feels towards the world at times, and know that anger is driven by a love of life too few have. You must give her space and room to cry and mourn for the losses that others have caused out of carelessness or cruelty.

To love a rescuer you must understand her passion to heal and save is a calling, not a choice. You must accept that to save animals is part of her soul and without that she could never be happy.

To love a rescuer you must be patient. You must accept her work comes first. She will forgo sleep, forgo food, forgo her life for animals in need. She will work tirelessly until her body and mind fail her completely and she cannot go on.

To Love a rescuer, you must be strong. You must not be threatened by her focus and love of animals. You must accept that the things you love about her, the strength and convictions and loyalty are also what drives her sense of duty to animals in need; you cannot have one without the other.

To love a rescuer you must never ask her to choose, because she will, and it will not be you. “

Thank you to whomever wrote this.

It came to me that every time I lose a dog, they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog that comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all of the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and as loving as they are.

Am so proud of this one

I was recently given a hard time by someone who said, "dressing your dog up is mean."

I don't think I need to explain myself to anyone, but I do think it's a good opportunity to use moments like this to educate.

So let's start from the top.

Headband: While cute, is most certainly not necessary, but when Adira came to me she hated anything (or anyone) touching her head. This made vet appointments, therapy sessions, simply even petting her a potentially dangerous situation. (bite risk) Using headbands became a training tool I used to help build her confidence, and help her understand things touching her head were not dangerous. She can also easily remove the headband if she didn't like it. She would simply just give a little shake, and away it would go. But after a few sessions she has zero concern it's there (as long as she can still freely move those big ole ears. 😆)

Collar/bandana: The collar doesn't need much explanation, aside from the fact that she only wears the collar outside, (for obvious reasons) and although bandana's aren't necessary, it too helped her to be more confident and comfortable (with time and training) because she had different articles touching her body in different places.

Shirt: For disabled dogs like adira clothing isn't always just a fashion statement. They have a harder time regulating their body temperature so clothing helps keep them warm. It helps them from getting sunburnt. It helps keep the straps of their harness or chairs from rubbing on their body causing irritation (especially shorter haired dogs). I'm sure there's more reasons but these are just some main ones!

Shoes/skates: Doesn't really need much explanation..... they do what shoes were meant to do, protect her feet!

Tutu: This isn't actually attached to her. 🤷‍♀️ It's attached to her chair! This isn't necessary at all..... but it makes her chair (and her) look extra cute! 😍

The pillow on her hip protects her side from the hard metal of the chair. The pillow always matches the pattern I have on her chair, which is all there as padding..... TO PROTECT HER BODY! (I'm just a little extra and make hers fancy.) 💁‍♀️

That's not mean.... that's called MAKING THE MOST OF HER SITUATION!

So the next time you see something you don't understand or agree with, try asking the reasoning behind it before you spout off with your judgmental opinion. You might be surprised by the answer and learn something. ❤️
