The NZ Fancy Rat Society is home of the NZ Registered Rat breeders. We are a group of breeders who are committed to improving the health and temperament of pet rats in New Zealand. We have been established as a group since 2018 but have now made things a bit more official by registering the NZFRS as an incorporated society.

We have made our breeders ‘rules’ more formal and found ways to enforce them - All registered breeders must show a high standard of rat care, as outlined in our housing standards, and adhere to our breeders ethics document. New breeders pass an interview before becoming registered and all breeders must film and share a rattery tour each year so that we can be sure that their care is up to standard. All breeders are encouraged to stay connected, work together, and contribute to the society in some way.

New breeders get heaps of support - we have breeding cages that can be borrowed, we share studs, new breeders can foster litters to see if breeding is for them before committing, we have a good collection of documents and templates (birth certificate, adoption contracts, care booklets etc.) that we share freely. We can help new breeders set up a website and help with rehoming babies. This is all so that we can help new breeders start off on the right foot to contribute to the overall wellbeing of rats in NZ..

All of this means that rats from registered breeders should be healthy, happy, friendly pets who will give their owners years of joy!

NZ Fancy Rat Society
Exciting news! The Registered Rat Breeders have done a big revamp of our website and expanded and improved our club. We’re now an official incorporated society - The NZ Fancy Rat Society - and, while we’re still home to the registered breeders, we have expanded membership to include pet rat owners and everyone interested in rats. We’ll be sharing lots over the next few months, including breeder intros, tips and tricks, health and feeding info, how to’s, and competitions.
If you’d like to join the NZFRS membership is free, signing up is super simple, and we promise to send very few annoying emails. Check out our shiny new website for more info!
Competition
On the first of every month we’ll be running a competition. This month’s competition is for all new members - sign up and you’re in to win! Scruffians’ potential future stud Tiberius will pick a name at random and the winner will get a prize pack including a ‘rare’ green sputnik, a cozy winter snuggle sack and hammock set, and some natural willow twig chews.
