Sanctuary dogs. Today Binx. Binx was found under a car, way out in the country and bought to me. I had to put him into a cage and leave him alone until he decided he would not eat me. I tried for a long time to place but no one would listen to me. I had him up for Chihuahua owners only, so they knew their quirks. I told them no petting, we would have to put him into a crate, you take him home and let him decide when he likes you, he WILL 100% bite you if you rush him. Sure enough, every single person who came shoved their hand in his face, and that was the end of that LOL. So he stayed. He loves me more than oxygen, but I sure did not want him. He is loved beyond measure and chi's really are different. He still "looks" like he is ready to eat my face, but he is only talking, it took some time to get used to. Sweetheart to me and that's all that matters.

Sanctuary dogs: These are the ones still living, I have many many more that have past on and will do one post about them when done with the dogs still living here.

Petey: Petey came to us at an adoption event over 10 yrs ago. When he got home my husband latched to him, rare since so many come here. Petey was Greg's constant companion until Greg died. Petey waited for years for him to come home, sleeping outside in the cold despite efforts to get him in. I am not sure he has ever gotten over his loss. They were buddies. Petey is supposed to be Frenchie/Boston/pit. One of the smartest dogs I have ever had. You can tell him one time to do or not to do something, and he knows from then on. He is extremely tolerant of all the other dogs, puppies, chickens. everything. I still take him to the pasture with me, and every time he runs down to my son's home to see him or maybe looking for Greg, who was often down there. He loves and seeks out men. It was almost harder to watch him grieve over Greg than it was for me.

Today, BAJA, Sunshine, and I drove to Baja to see the whales (what an experience). At one hotel we had to wait to check in so went exploring the town (Loreto). In a feed store we found this tiny puppy in a cage. I walked away, but not Sunshine! We had just arrived and had hotel reservations and tours planned none of which included a dog. I said if he is still here when we leave we will get him. Well, we went in the morning before we were to leave and there were 3 little boys terrorizing him through the cage. So up he came with us! We had to hide him in the hotel. I had zero intention of keeping him, and he would go up for adoption when we got back. Alas, he was too small to neuter, and by the time I had had him a month, he was staying. Good thing because Baja has some major anxiety issues. He is petrified of EVERYONE! Except Sunshine and myself. I seriously doubt most people would have kept him long. He is my first Chihuahua, and I would not take a million $$ for him. It's not great for big busy homes but perfect if you live alone or quiet with no visitors. Baja is now 8 yrs old. Could you have left him?

Sanctuary dogs----Let's do Baily today, isn't she cute? And perfectly adoptable you say! I tried believe me, Bailey came from a home with "feral" children, not sure why they gave her up, but they had no fence, and my guess is they had a hard time potty training her as she was not when she arrived. 99% of people have children in their lives, grandkids, nieces, cousins, neighbors etc. I had a couple of people come to see Bailey and made sure they bought their kids. I have never seen a dog shiver or show real fear of kids. She os terrified of them. So, due to the lack of a home with no children anywhere (like me 😁), she has been here several years. She does live to play with the other dogs and bark at EVERYTHING!! she is a schnoodle, not that you could tell by looking, but she is really all Schnauzer. She always looks scruffy, even right after a brush. She is quite the treat stealer.

Continuing with the Sanctuary dogs. Precious came from Moore pound, she was found tied in a yard in heat at 7 months old 😭. I had to hold her an extra long time so she never left. The danger of rescue when you don't use fosters is getting attached! Now about 14 yrs old.

MASON: Sanctuary dogs. These dogs have been here too long to move now. Mason came to me from a lady in Shawnee who saw him in a field with a blanket, food, and water. She spent over a week trying to catch him and got badly bitten in the process. Mason arrived in 2014, so he is "about 13 now. As with all dogs, I do try to get them adopted, but Mason could not be trusted around children or adults for that matter., and to this day still bites with purpose, even me, when I try to do things he does not want you to, brushing, clipping etc. It still takes 2 to trim his nails with a muzzle and a towel to wrap him in, it is quite an undertaking. I am sure he understands English if I say, "ready for a bath?" "Ready to get your nails trimmed" He goes and hides behind a door for hours, hoping I forgot about what I need to do. He is quite happy spending his days lounging around and sleeping; he never really got on with the other dogs but set's his limits, and they keep their distance. Let's just say Mason is warm and fuzzy. Many rescues just kill dogs like this; I feel if I take you on, I am responsible for you for life, Not until I tire of you or it gets hard. Most of the dogs I care for today would have been swiftly put down or returned to the pound they were "saved" from. I have never done that. To me that is not rescue. However, I do understand "making room" for adoptable dogs. I never ran my rescue like a business; that is what any non profit coaching will tell you, you have to run it like a business. I am the only one who sleeps in my body at night or looks at myself in the mirror, and I try not to make decisions I will find hard to live with, resulting in many not-perfect dogs living here with me. (Not a great business model).

Mason tries to be a good boy, and has lived a decent life with me he likely would not have had in most other places.

Thank you to those who continue to donate monthly and send gifts from the Amazon list, making it possible for me to care for these unwanted dogs.

Today, let's talk about Sugar. Sugar came in May 2015. so she is now upwards of 10 yrs old. She came with several other dogs from a hoarder situation; her owner went to jail, and the Police asked us to take all the dogs. She has always been fearful of men. We placed sugar 3 times, with very strict instructions and info about her quirks! Doesn't like men, hates it when you shout etc. etc. The first time, she was returned for barking at the dog next door. 2nd time a lady got a boyfriend, but Sugar didn't like him, so she came back 3rd. The lady got a boyfriend, and Sugar stayed under the bed and almost starved to death. She came back skin and bones. That was enough, so she stayed here. Sugar is the best housebroken dog I have ever had. She will hold it hours and hours if needed; she is good as gold but very bossy with other dogs, LOVES toys, I cannot keep enough around for her. But basically, she is a good girl. And while every pic seems to be a dirty look, she is quite happy here. HUGE THANK YOU to those who continue to donate monthly, helping me feed all these mouths. Keeping them happy and healthy.💓

Everyone wish the best for Princess and her new family as she goes to her to next and hopefully last home.

Continuing, but hoping Princess finds a home; she has zero issues and does not need to be here. She is 2 yrs old and loves everyone. Even chickens, she is a great guardian; a home in the country with older humans would be perfect. OR kids, she loves them all; she is just so easy, and I sure hope she will not become another sanctuary dog. You can apply for her at oksaveadog.org. She was taken to my vet to be PTS because they were moving; the kid got the pup and then moved, leaving the parents with a dog they never wanted and treated her that way. She ran every time I walked out of the house, it took her months to relax on the porch without charging off of it when I opened the door. She still runs when I throw treats or balls, but now she stops and comes back instead of running as far as she can, she has had things thrown at her. But is doing much better with trust. Just a very nice dog who deserves better than what she had and needs better than I can give her, I do not want to be the 80 yr old rescuer who needs to be rescued! I do not want her to outlive my ability to care for her, she is the youngest dog now and deserves better than this "old" home. She is and wants to be a guardian.

#4 To remind you, I am posting my sanctuary dogs unadoptable because they have never been adopted! I did not want to take Bear. I have taken down all of my pens and had decided not to take large dogs. They are incredibly hard to adopt, and I am too old. Dog food is very expensive, and it is just too hard on me. But alas, here is Bear. I was asked by a good friend to take him after he showed up at someone's home. He arrived and tried to eat me! I got him into a yard and could not enter for days. Hence, I knew immediately that he could never leave, as I had feared. He will be here for life.. He was a very unhappy dog, and it seems he was obtained, and someone tried to train him for a police dog and failed miserably. He is very aggressive with strangers out of fear of them. It took me 6 months to get him to the vet for neuter. He would not allow me to brush him and was an awful mess. Well months of gentle handling and convincing. I can now brush, clip and clean him up, though he keeps his guard up, and you can tell he has had some bad experiences. He lives to chase and carry a ball, stick, whatever he has at the moment. I feel he had lived in a tiny pen but has come to love running in large yards chasing things. So here he is, another one until they die. What a gorgeous dog, and what a shame someone has treated him so badly. He is great with the small dogs so that has made life easier. I think he is likely about 8 yrs old now.

Today #3 we will cover Duke.. Duke was a very expensive Bern-a Doodle (or mutt). I was asked to take him as they were moving to Dallas 🤷‍♀️. Many people got these dogs as a pretty yard statue, but they are NOT!! Duke is the most energetic alpha dog I have. I had zero intention of keeping him, but the "right" home has not been found. He is highly energetic and when i researched his chip he had had 4 homes by the time he was 2. I suspect too much energy for people with small backyards and apartments. I would still place him if the right home could be found, but you would have to have a very large yard and jog or do marathons. Here he has 10 acres and is perfectly happy here. He is very scared of other large dogs, one of his potential homes had a large dog, and he would hide in the corner, not eat or drink, so that didn't work out. Infact he got out of the yard and came back here! He loves small dogs.. His hair grows crazy fast, so I have to groom him monthly (quite an expense, so I usually do it myself when my back allows), but this is another consideration of any home: you are looking at over $100 a month in groomer bills alone. He is a great dog (besides the counter surfing). How many things have I left on the counter only for them to mysteriously disappear? But he trained me quick, if I want it I put it up.
