Its been a few weeks since we began testing this idea, and a few months since we decided to push forward. I got to this point because I realized I made a mistake. I misjudged the risks with Ace last summer, and now all I have are memories. This was completely my fault, I wasn't holding onto her leash when I should have, and I will live with that forever.

However, Dog guardians have been forced to take chances with their dogs well-being for too long. No longer do you have to rush through tasks like grocery shopping because your dog is tied up outside or locked away in your car. We have come up with a solution.

This is my brindle pitbull, Ace. She would be one year and three months old, if she were still with us today. This past summer, late one night she was hit by a car as we were taking our usual stroll through downtown. In the morning I cried as I learned I would never see her again.

As the months passed, I thought all about the moments I was lucky enough to have with her. When you have a dog that you love, going anywhere with them becomes an adventure. Few things were better than the joy I use to get when Ace would see me pick up the leash and realize we were about to go outside.

Since then, I would walk by stores and see dogs tied outside store fronts or locked up in cars by their owners, undoubtedly because there was no other option as they tried to shop or be active. I remembered running errands with Ace, feeling unsure nearly every time if I should take the same risks. I remember wanting to bring Ace everywhere with me, but not having the guarantee that if I left her outside for a short time she would be safe, I usually felt forced to leave her home. It’s specifically these times when I think back, that I wish I could change the most.

In December 2013, I realized dog owners would be relieved if they had a place where they could feel comfortable leaving their companions while on the go. Although I wouldn’t personally be able to use the service, I knew that I could honor Ace’s memory by creating something we both would of appreciated and enjoyed. I started Doggie Dens so that dog owners like me would no longer feel inhibited. So that they could breathe easier because they would have the guarantee that their dogs would be safe while they are out seizing the day.
