~♡~ SAFE SOCIALISATION ~♡~

Our puppies have been out and about in their blue chariot this week.

💙🏪Here they are soaking up all the new sights and sounds of a supermarket entrance.

💙🚶‍♀️‍➡️They saw lots of people of all shapes, sizes and ages.

💙🧙They saw lots of different people appearing and disappearing through the sliding doors.

💙🛒They also heard a motorised scooter and a motorised wheelchair, loud delivery trucks and saw lots of shopping trolleys rattling back and forth.

🎉🥳SOCIALISING PUPPIES TO NOVEL ITEMS

🆕️Socialising puppies comes in lots of forms here at Blacklash. We introduce a novel item or experience to the puppies every day. This might be a new sound, a new surface to walk on, an object like a box to explore or something new to climb on.

🆕️The puppies are curious about new things and always go to explore them. This is what we want to see in our puppies - little enrichment seekers!

🆕️The introduction of novelty in their everyday life builds their confidence and they learn to accept change as a good thing, not something to worry about.

🆕️Today's novel item is a singing toy! The puppies gathered around to see what it was, tails wagging!
Good babies!

🆕️Presenting a new item to the puppies each day (instead of giving them a big pile of soft toys that are similar) helps to build up their experience of the world.

🆕️The more experiences the puppies have during this critical socialisation period, the more confident and resilient they will be as adult dogs.

This is the best gift we as breeders can give our puppies. ❤️

A BIT OF INFO ABOUT CRATE TRAINING AT BLACKLASH

🚫Crates are often triggering for people because of a negative association. I assume this is because crates are sometimes misused by people and therefore many have a negative association with them. We have all seen the heartbreaking photos of miserable, unkempt puppies and dogs being raised in rows and rows of filthy crates in cramped conditions by puppy farmers. This is not OK.

🚫Crates can be misused; puppies and dogs can be overcrated. Crates are not designed for dogs to live in! This is also not OK.

✅️Crates are great for travelling, sleeping, eating, managing multiple dog households, recovery after surgery, confinement during illness, housetraining and more!

✅️I am going to be showing you how we condition our puppies to using a crate. We do this in an incremental way, so it takes time. We make sure that puppies have good experiences in crates from an early age. This makes the transition to the new home much easier - for the puppy and their new owners.

✅️Because we socialise our puppies from an early age, we also travel with them in a car from an early age. We use a crate for travelling. Our puppies also have some vet trips coming up, for vaccinations and microchipping. We will be using a crate at the Vets because it's a safe way to move and contain the puppies.

✅️Our puppies are currently using a crate for sleeping in their weaning pen. This is an easy way to start associating the crate with good things.

Next week we will start doing some individual work with the puppies in crates eg feeding, relaxing with chews etc.

I will share what we do, so you can see the process.

This is the weaning pen set up after the whelping box is taken out at just over 5 weeks. We use a 2 door crate for this and leave the doors open so the puppies can come and go as they wish. The crate has plenty of warm, soft bedding to make it cosy. Our puppies are trained to use a litter tray from 2 weeks. By 5 weeks they are little champions at using the litter trays and keeping their bed and crate clean and dry, as well as the rest of their pen, which is where they eat and play.

❤️🙏If you are concerned about our crate training, please don't be! We have a first class training programme and puppies who love their crates! We continually have excellent feedback on our puppy raising programme from our puppy families, our Vets and professional trainers who know our puppies and respect what we do.
..and finally a note to other breeders who disapprove of my puppy raising, perhaps you could take a look at your own puppy raising and see where you could improve, rather than trying to undermine what I'm doing!

Positive reinforcement comes in all forms!

There is no better way for puppies to learn that something is safe, than from their mother.

Here is Emelia nursing her babies and showing them that crates are a nice place to be.

We always give our nursing mums choices when they have puppies. They always have an exit point, where they can come and go if they want, while the puppies stay safe.

EDITED TO ADD

The crate was introduced to the puppy pen a few days after we started weaning. We took the whelping box out at 5 weeks, which is a usual time developmentally for our Cavalier puppies to move into a weaning pen. The puppies start to climb the walls of the whelping box and to look for ways to get out. From the time our puppies are born, up to around the 5 week mark, the puppies live in the whelping box and this is where our mums nurse the puppies.

BARRIER CHALLENGE 1 (continued)

💜Mr Purple 2nd session

Pleased to see Mr Purple just completed his barrier challenge, so he is now caught up to the others. No snoozing on the job today! 🤣

The banging in the background is Emelia wagging her tail against the puppy pen lolol. 🤣🩷

BARRIER CHALLENGE 1

The Puppy Culture programme teaches puppies to be enrichment seekers; to be able to think and to problem solve. Through our puppy raising, we give our puppies the confidence and skills to try new things and work through problems, rather than giving up and getting frustrated and upset.

We only present simple things that the puppies can physically do. We don't call them or help them by picking them up (even when we want to).

In this exercise, the puppies are faced with a barrier (a puppy pen panel). They can see and smell their food. They need to work out that if they walk around the panel, they can get to the food.❤️
