P L A N - evacuation of pets takes some planning and preparation, especially if you have multiple pets and species that need carry cages.

Do you have a plan for your pets? Make sure you consider your pets when packing your grab bag.

If you have to leave home, take your pets with you and make sure you pack their essentials e.g. food, medicine. If it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for them.

Pets are not “just animals” and they don’t need to “toughen up”. Give them a safe haven and the comfort they deserve and enjoy.

Your may have an extra layer of fur, but that doesn't mean they don't get cold in winter. Here are some tips for keeping them warm during the colder months:

❄ Use a suitable cover or coat when exercising older dogs, especially if they're short-haired or thin-skinned
❄ Move any kennels to a sunny, dry area away from strong winds
❄ Fix any leaks and block draughts in the kennel before winter sets in
❄ Use extra bedding in your dog's kennel and make sure you change it regularly to keep it dry and fresh
❄ Make sure your dog has access to fresh, clean water that won't freeze when the temperature drops
❄ If your dog is allowed inside the house, bring them in for some extra cuddles!

If you're worried about your dog's health or mobility this winter, talk to your vet. They'll be able to give you advice based on your dog's breed, age and health history.

Pet Emergency Planning starts with preparing for the worst case scenario, which is being separated from our beloved animals.

Microchipping is not only about your pet, it’s about a system that needs your help.

Unidentified, owned pets put pressure on rescue centres and vet clinics, who need the space and resources to care for unowned animals and emergencies.

Be kind to your pet, yourself and others.

Get your pets microchipped and registered so they get back to you QUICK AS!

In a disaster, animals may be displaced out of your area or not end up a vet clinic, so microchips must be registered on a national database as well.

In New Zealand the national database is called the
NZ Companion Animal Register
www.animalregister.co.nz

To check if your contact details linked to a microchip are correct, you will need the microchip number and go online, go to
www.animalregister.co.nz

(Make sure you know and are registered on your country’s national animal database)

If you don’t have the microchip number, check your pet’s vaccination book or call your vet clinic and ask them to check on their database. Also confirm that they have up to date address and contact numbers for you.

Don't forget to include your pets in your emergency planning 🐕🧾🐈🐇

During these hot summer months, add extra water to your emergency supplies for your pets. Hot temperatures and distressing situations, like an emergency, may mean your pets drink more water than usual.

Pets get unsettled by unsettling weather, so don’t wait and see if the weather predictions are severe enough to take action.
Be ready, with pets inside, secure, dry shelter for outdoor animals and remember to have enough cat carriers to transport cats and small animals, if unexpected evacuation is needed.

As they say, history repeats itself, so be prepared, have a pet emergency plan and pack ready at all times.

On this day in 1855, a magnitude 8.2 earthquake shook Wairarapa and caused tsunami that struck the lower North Island. Generating not one but several types of tsunami.

During the earthquake, the entire region west of the Wairarapa fault lurched abruptly northeast, causing water in Wellington Harbour to suddenly rise 2.5 metres. Shops and houses along the beach and Lambton quay were flooded. For the next eight hours, waters rose 2-3 meters and receded more than 1 meter lower than at spring tides every 20-25 minutes.

About 10 minutes after the first shock, a tsunami swept the coast on both sides of Cook Strait. At Lyall Bay, the wave overtopped the Rongotai isthmus and flowed into Evans Bay.

In Palliser Bay the tsunami was over nine metres high. Three waves arrived within a minute of each other.

Reports suggest that between eight and nine people died, and five were hospitalised. Numerous landslides were associated with the earthquake. Much of modern Wellington's central business district is formed by reclamations on land raised from the harbour by the event.

Maybe you are not affected this time, but one day your area might be on the news or declared a state of emergency.
Never say never, instead have an emergency plan and fund, because a disaster may find you and your pets at the least expected time and place.

Emergency Mobile Alert is an additional way of receiving information about emergencies in your area. Emergency Mobile Alerts can be broadcast to your mobile by authorised emergency agencies, without needing to sign up or download an app.
