July is Lost Pet Prevention Month
The number FOUR reason Shelties go missing is they pulled out of their collar when startled on a walk by a bigger dog or a loud noise. A Sheltie’s neck is larger than their head and need a no-slip collar w/buckle or a martingale collar.
https://www.whitepineoutfitters.com/shop-all/mini-softweb-combo-collar
DOUBLE LEASHED: One leash attached to the harness and one leash attached to a Martingale collar doubles their safety. If your Sheltie slips the collar, a leash is still attached to the harness.
These are some of the times to double leash your Sheltie to keep them the safest:
• Newly adopted Shelties. You are taking them out of an environment they are likely comfortable with and taking them to people and places they are unsure of. They should be double leashed on potty breaks (even in a fenced yard), and on walks. * It has been noted that it’s best to wait 3+ weeks for them to become more comfortable with you before taking "long" walks in the neighborhood.
• You should never let a newly adopted Sheltie off leash in an area not fenced. They have – AND most likely will run off.
• Shy and puppy mill Shelties. They are always nervous of their surroundings. They may require double leashing the rest of their life.
• Traveling & Rest Areas. They are in unfamiliar area with cars and trucks moving near them. The semis have air brakes that may startle them also.
✂️ Be sure to always adjust the fit on their harness & collar after grooming.
🚪 If you're going on vacation and leaving your Sheltie in the care of a friend or family member, purchase a baby gate for the area by their exit door. The #1 reason Shelties go missing while in the care of a pet sitter is they "bolted out an opened door."
For more ideas to add to your Sheltie’s safety routine, go to Minnesota Sheltie Rescue web page and read “Prevention of a Lost Sheltie.” Be sure to print out a copy and go over it with your pet sitter.

Have you been searching for that special girl who is gorgeous, sweet, and gets along well with other Shelties? Then Willow (who is listed as Dusty) is the girl for you! Willow came from a very bad breeding situation, but through the love of her Foster Mom, she has blossomed into a lovely girl. Willow is very unique in coloring which just adds to her beauty. In the video you will also see Millie, a Sable, who is available for adoption. The Tri belongs to the Foster Mom. Are you interested in learning more about Willow (who is listed as Dusty)? Visit our website! https://www.illinoissheltierescue.com/available.html
The puppies are growing and becoming more active every day! If you are interested in finding out about the adoption process, visit our website. All 4 puppies will be available as well as their momma. https://www.illinoissheltierescue.com
Wrestlemaina Sheltie Puppy Style! CISR Volunteer & Foster Mom, Linda, is having a great time with the wee ones.
Riker is such a handsome and fun boy! Here he is, playing fetch with his foster mom. Riker loves everyone, fur and human alike. He's just a sweetheart of a dog. Riker is overweight, so he needs a home with someone who is active and likes to go for walkies. To learn more about Riker and our adoption process, visit our website. Check out the other dogs who are looking for homes as well! https://www.illinoissheltierescue.com/index.html
Let's catch up with Willow, former puppy mill breeding dog, who is now looking for her forever home. Willow is currently living with her foster mom, Gina. Here's what Gina has to say: "In just 6 weeks, this former puppy mill dog has turned into a completely different dog. Willow (who is listed as Dusty on the CISR website) loves attention and snuggles, knows her new name, loves to play outside, and is such a happy pup. She engages in play with her resident sheltie brothers and is very fond of her stuffed toys (i.e. doesn’t like to share). She is still shy around people she has not met before but with time Willow will learn that good people exist." If you are interested in Willow or any of the dogs CISR has available, visit our website. https://www.illinoissheltierescue.com
Mill Dog's First Christmas! Get a tissue because this will bring a tear to you eye. Willow, aka Dusty, loves the bear she received for Christmas. Willow lived in a puppy mill her entire life. She's doing well in her foster home, learning to give and receive love. She is timid, so she needs to be in a quieter home with quiet, calm dogs. If you would like to learn more about the adoption process, visit our website. https://www.illinoissheltierescue.com
Let's check in with Gina, Miss Maple's Foster Mom! “Miss Maple Leaf is really starting to engage and play with me and my two Shelties. She was down another 6 ounces since her weigh in a week prior. You'd better find her a family soon because my two Sheltie boys think she's really great and they adore her!” As you can see by the video Gina took, even losing a few pounds can change a dog's energy level and personality. Way to go Gina and Miss Maple! Are you interested in Miss Maple? Read more about her, our adoption process, and fill out an online adoption form by visiting our website. https://www.illinoissheltierescue.com
