Ashlack Stables: Livery

Ashlack Stables is located in Grizebeck, Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District. We offer DIY, full, retirement and youngstock livery.

Youngstock livery at Ashlack is in mixed herds of suitable horses, always with other youngsters of a similar age, in huge and varied fields with good grazing and ample natural shelter. The amount of handling done is something we will discuss with you and deliver as per your requirements, and the weekly price will reflect this. Prices for youngstock livery start from £35 per week.

Retirement livery at Ashlack is in mixed herds, in huge and varied fields with good grazing and ample natural shelter. Retirees are checked twice daily, feet picked each day and fully groomed weekly. Hay is included and fed as needed. Every horse is treated as an individual and cared for as if he were our own. Our aim is for these special old ladies and gents to live as naturally as possible with all the care that our golden oldies need to thrive and enjoy their well-earned retirement. Prices for grass retirement livery start from £40 per week.

Owners are welcome to visit anytime, or if you are a little too far away we will send as many updates and photos as you would like. We focus on grass youngstock and retirement livery, but can offer stabled livery subject to availability.

For ridden horses we have stables available, unlimited turnout, a small sand school, xc schooling field, working hunter jumps and incredible Lake District hacking right on our doorstep. DIY livery is available plus any additional help can be provided all the way up to full livery. Turnout is generally in mixed herds, however we do our best to suit the needs of each individual horse. Our fields are expansive and varied, providing superb natural shelter and a stimulating turnout environment for your horse, but small paddocks are available too and often used for restricted grazing or restricted movement purposes. Salt licks are available in each field, and either natural water sources or troughs. Turnout truly is unlimited - we recognise the benefits of horses spending as much time being horses as possible, and impose no limit on the hours of turnout, year round. Our only rule is no bringing horses in in the dark, but then if you would like your horse to come in and can't get here in time, we are happy to bring him in for you. All stables are rubber matted throughout, most are 12 x 12 ft (with one or two varying in size, both bigger and smaller). Electricity, water, tack room (including brew room!) are all within the yard. Hay and bedding can be purchased onsite or you may provide your own. DIY stabled livery is £25 per week.

We have monthly yard visits from Archway Veterinary Practice, or you may use any vet that you wish. Our worming programme from spring to autumn is through worm counts with worming only done if count results are sufficiently high, then a winter wormer is given, in line with veterinary advice. Several local farriers serve our yard, or you may continue to use your own farrier. All horses are flu vaccinated (boosters every 12 months) and tetanus vaccinated (boosters every 24 months).

All horses have third party liability insurance, and because we take biosecurity seriously, all horses have a strangles test prior to arrival so you can be confident that your horse will be in a very low risk strangles and flu environment.

Finally, yard owner (Lindsay) lives on site, adding that extra peace of mind!
