**SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY**

Hello, my name is Nerys!

"I am a 6 month old tricolor Basenji puppy in search of a forever home.
My breeder kept me a little longer because she was thinking about who was going to stay. She says I deserve a home where I'll be the center of attention."

'Nerys' Annandael's Daughter of Bajor
Ch. Dark Moon's Bada Bing! x GCH Lia Faille's Center of the Universe BCAT

Nerys' mother was at Westminster this year.

She will be embarked (we do this with all of our puppies). OFA links of her parents will be posted below.

A little about Nerys:
She is independent, curious, and loving. She isn't much of a cuddler, but she likes being near her people. She gets along with all of the other dogs in our house. She is absolutely a Basenji through and through and is very adept at climbing.

I believe she will excel at anything you put your mind to. She responds well to positive reinforcement.

She has been evaluated by multiple colleagues of mine and IS a potential show prospect.

She is offered on a co-ownership only. All future health testing will be paid for by me.

100% agree with this!

I want to add something to this and it may hurt some feelings and I am sorry.
Breeders, thank you for rehoming your adult dogs. This means you care about them and want them to be that special dog in a great home. But, some of the rehoming starts at your house, too. Recalls, stays, door respect, socializing, crate training, walking nicely on a leash, microchipping, educating your people about WHY a dog is a flight risk.
Accidents happen. I get it. I know.
Even sending a dog to a handler is scary. I have had the horrible experience of a dog slipping a collar, luckily we found him. I was sick when this happened.
I have a client, that as much as she trusts me, sends her dog with a tracking collar. Because she knows accidents can happen.
Teaching your dogs to be calm, social and obedient will save their lives and make them a much happier dog.

***THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TAKING AN ADULT DOG INTO YOUR HOME!

This information can be applied to any dog of any breed at any age.

Too many adult dogs are lost within the first 48 hours of leaving their previous homes. Some will say accidents happen, yes they do, and they WILL happen if you leave room for them to happen….Meaning you should understand that as soon as these dogs leave the care of their previous owner they will become scared. This doesn’t mean they haven’t been raised right. This means that you are not their person and this new place is not their home. If you give them the opportunity to escape they will absolutely take it and they will NOT come to anyone they do not know.

Dogs can slip out of flat collars, harnesses and bite you out of fear to escape. The safest place for them is in a crate inside your vehicle. If they might need a potty break, it should only happen inside a securely fenced area. If they have an accident in their crate during transport, it’s a lot easier to clean up rather than trying to catch a scared dog on the run. If that dog is killed, you will look back and that pile of p**p in the crate will not seem like such a big deal.

❌ Don't take the dog out of the crate during transport unless absolutely necessary.
❌ Don’t try to walk the dog outside of a location that’s not securely fenced, just move them to and from in the crate.
❌ Don’t let the dog off lead at your home if you do not have a fenced yard.
❌ Don’t let the dog roam free in the home if the front door (leading to an unfenced yard) will be used frequently (this is a big concern with homes that have children running in and out)

The 3-3-3 Rule:

3 Days:

In the first 3 days after your new dog comes home, he is likely to feel overwhelmed with all the changes and may be scared. He might not want to eat or drink and may just curl up in his crate or hide somewhere and that is okay. Patience and setting them up for success is vital during this time period. Be sure to give them time & space to get comfortable and more familiar with their surroundings and routine.
It is important not to ask much out of them during this time, bonding will come so you shouldn’t try to force it. Things like calling their name over and over or trying to lure them to you with food/treats is a big DON’T. A better approach is to ignore them and let them come to you when they are ready.

3 Weeks:

After about 3 weeks, your dog will start to settle into his new home. He will feel more comfortable and start to figure out his new environment. He will get into a routine (don’t forget, you need to help with that!), and start to show you his true personality. Of course, that can have drawbacks and if your dog has any behavioral concerns, they will tend to manifest around this time. At the 3-week mark, it is a good time to invest in some training, teaching tricks, obedience etc. This will get his mind working and will begin to create a bond between you and him in a healthy setting.

3 Months:

After 3 months, your dog should be settled into their routine and feel completely comfortable in his or her new home. They should be developing trust in you and gaining a sense of security with their new family. And don’t forget brushing up and continuing to work on new tricks or skills is always a good way to continue to build your bond and keep them mentally stimulated.

Bringing an adult dog into your home can be very rewarding and the right move for those that just want to skip the puppy stage. However, it is a night and day difference between bringing home an adult vs a puppy….so you’ll need to weigh the pros and cons. Then be honest with yourself about your own capabilities. Both require time and patience. But with an adult you must be diligent and keep them safely secured until they accept you as their new family. Well even after, but with time, you can trust them with more freedom.

For breeders rehoming adults, I recommend placing a tracking collar on the dog that stays on for the first month minimum. For me, going forward the purchase of a tracking collar will be factored into the purchase price of the dog. A copy of this information will be sent prior to any agreement taking place.

Basenjis are contenders for the title of oldest AKC breed. Paleontologists tell us that the first domesticated dogs looked a lot like Basenjis. They were already well established when they were brought up the Nile from interior Africa as gifts for the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Basenjis are depicted in ancient Egyptian artifacts, and traces of the breed can also be seen in ancient Babylonian and Mesopotamian art. 🐾

FYI
My puppies are not products. They are living, breathing, feeling creatures that I consider family. If I sold you a puppy, it's because I trusted you to be their custodian. I sold you a puppy so that with that money I could get some of the expense I paid back to use towards my dogs. This is a labor of love. This is not a business. If you're going to treat our relationship as such, you are welcome to look elsewhere for a dog. In fact, I suggest you either do not look for a Basenji (no breeder I know wants this) or settle on not having a pet.
A car is a product. A TV is a product. Living things are NOT!

Breed History

THROWBACK THURSDAY!

(Thanks to Bo Bengtson's Great Show Dogs of the Past)

·
"The Basenji Dainty Dancer of Glenairley was not yet nine months old and not advertised as a champion when she became the first of her breed to win an all-breed BIS in North America at Vancouver Island Dog Fanciers on September 7, 1957 under R. (Robert?) Waters. She was born on December 12, 1956 and won a second BIS at Victoria KC on October 5 1957 under judge W. Bowden. After these wins in Canada she started her U.S. career by going BOB from the classes for a five-point major in Tacoma, Washington, three weeks later. Dainty Dancer later became a champion in the U.S. as well as Canada, winning a seven BIS in both Canada and the U.S. in a little more than a year. In 1958 she was shown 24 times, winning BOB 23 times and placed in the group each time — winning 18 Hound Group Firsts.
Dancer's measurements are given in a full-page ad in Kennel Review, December 1957: height 15 & 7/8 inches, weight 22 & ½ inches, “overall length” 15 & 7/8 inches. She is described as a “superb little bitch” with “level top line, good tuck-up, and beautifully curled tail held naturally against the hip …” She was bred in Canada by Margot Bowden, owned by Mrs. Margaret Robertson of Victoria, British Columbia, and handled by E. R. (Bob) Hastings, then living in Oregon.
Dancer was sired by Drumadoon Ducat out of Glenairley Melodious, both of whom descended almost entirely from Veronica Tudor-Wiliams' famous “of the Congo” strain in England."

The Basenji Ch. Katema of Carmel was BOB at Beverly-Riviera Kennel Club in 1954, handled by co-owner Bob Mankey under judge Eva Hill. Mankey already had the Cambria kennel name, later known for many champions. The caption says that “Entries in the show rings in California have been increasing steadily with the new gains in popularity for the breed.”

I recently posted a Basenji photo with Bob Mankey handling. Here he is again, with a different dog: Ch. Kedar, according to the caption owned by the Cambria kennels, co-owned by Mankey and taking “another big win with stiff competition” at Harbor Cities Kennel Club 1952. The placement was BOB and Group 4th, the judge Maxwell Riddle.

Basenji History

Pretty much all the Basenjis featured have been from some well- known show breeder, but this grainy, small photo is of the Ottoboni kennels, about which I frankly know nothing. Does anyone know if it had any historical importance? The caption makes it sound like a fairly large operation: “Puppies, bred bi***es, or show stock” are obviously available. “Red and White, A.K.C. Linebred.” No name of the owner is listed, but the kennel was located in Portland, Oregon

Breed History

The Basenji Eng. Ch. Amelia of Little Breach was presented with a full-page ad in the June 1956 issue of Kennel Review. I had heard of Amelia and the Little Breach Basenjis that were bred in the U.K. by Mrs. (?) B. Percival, but had no idea that Amelia was imported into the U.S. and can find no mention of her in any of my Basenji books. Amelia was owned by Mr. & Mrs. Ray T. Hubbard of Oxnard, California; they do not list a kennel name in the ad but also offered at stud Little Breach Happy Warrior, a son of the famous Am. Ch. Kingolo.

An Internet search indicates that Amelia became an American champion and also produced champion offspring. The judges' critiques from British shows that are quoted in the ad are very enthusiastic: “Amelia gave me extreme pleasure to judge, beautifully made, with all the breed essentials, moved and showed to perfection.” - “Amelia was a most comfortable winner …” - ”I thought that she stood right away from the opposition …” - “Just came to view and to conquer. A little model in this form, style, quality and tremendous type,” etc.

Amelia was sired by Ch. Benedick of Little Breach out of Ch. Jessica of Little Breach.

Thank you! This is well said!

A message from the sorry not sorry department:

We $ell dogs.

(See how I have to misspell that word just to get this post past animal rights influenced rules that are slowly becoming accepting as the norm.)

I’m getting messages daily about people looking for information about the “adoption process.” I truly appreciate you reaching out and I am very grateful for it, but this is just something I need to say.

I do not subscribe to the language of those animal rights influencers that include words such as "adoption", "pet parent", "fur baby", etc. This may sting to hear and might make some think I think of my dogs as livestock or unworthy of being family members. It is in fact the exact opposite. Words matter. You want to OWN your dog. You want to be the one to decide what your dog needs to be the most confident and well rounded companion animal within your family.

When all dogs are "fur babies", we will no longer be able to fulfill their genetic desires with the real work that they thrive on such as picking up birds; scrambling rubble piles to find lost or injured people; leading the blind as guide dogs; using their noses at the airport to ensure our safety in customs; doing service work for disabled individuals or individuals in need of the support only a dog can bring including veterans and children. We will no longer be able to put them in crates that provide safety and rest, we will no longer be able to use fair and humane training tools to teach them how to live with us, and eventually owning even family pet dogs will become too difficult to even attempt.

There is an epidemic of badly behaved dogs and at the very same time there is an explosion of doggy daycare, dog parks, and fur parent culture. Behavioral euthanasia is commonplace as death is chosen over the mild discomfort and inconvenience of taking control of the animal. It is also more commonplace because the damages created by raising a dog as a human infant “fur child” are often nearly irreversible.

Please consider the language you use and what it means to the future of dogs sharing our lives with us. Be your dog's owner, and be a good one. Enjoy the freedom to decide what is best for your dog, but be responsible and put their needs first when it comes to what they need. Being a good owner is a lot of work and the first two years of a dog's life will set the tone for the many years ahead you will enjoy together. The kind of leadership that works best for all dogs is in jeopardy of becoming a thing of the past, and the dogs themselves will be next.
