Raising and caring for pedigreed cats for 30 years, I have always been a cat lover. Ever since I was a little girl. My mom said I told her, at a very young age, I would some day own a “fancy pedigree’d cat”. I bought my first pedigree’d cat in 1988. She was a beautiful Seal Point Himalayan, and that led to my next, a Blue Point Male Himalayan, which led to breeding and showing them shortly there after. My husband bought our first Maine C**n as a gift for me for Valentines day, and it was a hands down decision that we would poor our hearts and home into the preservation, care and health of these incredible cats!
Once our journey began with the Maine C**n, my mentor, insisted I consider working with the polydactly lines. I wasn’t sure I wanted one since, at the time, they were not accepted in the show hall, though they have always been accepted for registration. She insisted again and even gave me my first polydactyl breeding girl. Beautiful Pele. I was immediately head over heals for her. She was so goofy with her thumbs she used like humans use theirs. One of the best mama cats I have ever had, with some of the most gorgeous babies, I am happy to say she is still alive today and residing with my parents. Her birthday, the day after mine, she just turned 17 years old this year, and lives with her 15 year old daughter.
I have always been a supporter of the polys and continuing the best in health and highest of standards accepted for show, since I adopted Pele. Even with all the false information you hear about health concerns. Unfortunately, politics come into play in any kind of competition, and since the poly’s were not originally put into the show halls when the breed was, there was a lot of miss information spread not only about this original trait of the Maine C**n Cat, but any breeder who supported it. Today things have changed for the better and polys are now accepted in certain registries for show, and are now highly sought after. You can still register them in any registry in the USA. Because of our dedication to them over all these years, we are proud to that we not only have very low complete co-efficients of less than 10% in some cases, but we also have improved the problems with the feet as well as better boning, health and stunningly awesome type in our polys.
Over the years we have had the privilege of having Norwegian Forest Cats, Siberian Forest Cats, Himalayan and Ragdolls, but our love for the Maine C**n is pure and complete. They are an incredibly intelligent, caring, goofy, playful companion, like no other cat. A Manly man’s best friend and the softest most sensitive persons number one beloved companion. We truly hope you get the privilege of getting to know and love a Maine C**n. Head Butts and Purrs from all of us at C**nplay!
