It should be a gorgeous day for The Sandhills Dog Fair tomorrow! Well behaved/socialized dogs are very welcome 💚 Don’t miss out!

TOMORROW!! This is a map of just a small section of the Village to show you how close you are to things so that you can plan on parking accordingly! The Dog Fair is located at The Village Arboretum beside Town Hall (395 Magnolia Rd.). Rassie Wicker Park is a 3-minute walk across the street, Cannon Park is a 7-minute walk away, and the downtown Village of Pinehurst is only a 10-minute walk away!
The Linden Lodge Dog Dash starts at Tuft's Memorial Park and winds through The Village and ends at the Sandhills Dog Fair.
Just me mindful when you park that you are not blocking businesses, driveways, or people's property. Pay attention to NO PARKING signs and LIMITED TIME PARKING SIGNS especially in the Downtown Village Area. There is a huge lot next to Tufts Memorial Park for a nice stroll through the Village to the event.
💩Be sure to clean up after your pup while you make your way to the event!
Limited Handicap Parking will be available in front of Town Hall.
NO GOLF CARTS ARE PERMITTED IN THE EVENT SPACE!
See you all tomorrow!!!

What an incredible morning! The mobile surgical team of the Sandhills Spay Neuter Veterinary Clinic SNVC was down at Caring Hearts for Canines providing low-cost spay and neuter surgeries to this wonderful dog rescue. Because of the ease of access to the mobile unit, the animals could go directly from their living quarters into surgery, then right back to their familiar environment to recover. Now they are ready to be adopted! Today is also our FIRST-EVER 3-DOCTOR DAY—we were able to provide 45 dogs surgeries at the SNVC clinic in Vass and 12 in the mobile unit.

It’s World Spay Day🩺

Here are a few fun facts about spaying your pet:
✔️ Spayed dogs live 23% longer than unaltered females.
✔️ The cost of spaying an animal is less than the average cost of caring for an accidental litter.
✔️ Medical evidence shows that females spayed before their first heat cycle are typically healthier.
✔️ On average, 1 in every 4 dogs brought into animal shelters across the nation are purebred.
✔️ For every human born in the US, 45 cats and 15 dogs will be born, meaning that there simply aren’t enough homes for the amount of animals out there.
✔️ Spaying will not affect a pet’s natural instinct to protect the home or family. This is determined more by genetics and environment rather than hormones.
✔️ Cats and dogs take just 2 months to birth a litter, so they can have 2-3 litters per year.
✔️Spaying one dog or cat can prevent over 3,000 offspring over a 5 year period.

There are low cost spay/neuter options throughout NC, and if you don’t want to worry about the cost of finding an animal and altering them on your own, we have plenty of adoptable pets that come spay or neutered and vaccinated! Photo by HLB Photography ❤️

Wonderful article in The Pilot Newspaper about West Pine Middle School's Sindy Murphy's "ROAR" class raising money for CACF. Thank you to these young philanthropists! The funds will go to very good use.

Just before Christmas, a group of altruistic pet-loving seventh graders at West Pine Middle School initiated, organized and implemented a fundraiser for the Companion Animal Clinic Foundation in Southern Pines.

YEAR-END RECAP: The Sandhills Spay Neuter Veterinary Clinic SNVC Heads Into 2024 Stronger Than Ever!

by Bobbie Mudge, President CACF

Our strength comes from our past: the remarkable people who had the vision of lessening the endless stream of unwanted puppies and kittens and lightening the burden on rescue groups and the county animal control agencies. This fall, we lost our cherished founding member, Dr. Joe Curry. Twenty years ago, Joe, along with Dr.Tom Daniel and Deborah Wilson, had the vision of creating a low cost spay and neuter clinic which would be run as a not for profit business and would be supported by a 501c3 foundation. Deborah created the Companion Animal Clinic Foundation, Tom brought the community together, and Joe pulled himself out of retirement, rolled up his sleeves, and began running a clinic. Dr. Joe Curry was more productive and creative in his seventies and eighties than most of us are in a life time. We love you and miss you, Joe.

Another source of our strength has been our steadfast veterinarians who have done surgical work on a per diem basis, Dr. James Mackie, Dr. Doug Meckes, and Dr. Janet Sizelove. Dr. Mackie and Dr. Meckes follow Dr. Curry’s reluctance to accept retirement as they bring their surgical skill and energy to our clinic. Dr. Sizelove has been both our non paid veterinarian owner and our per diem surgeon. We cherish these dedicated veterinarians who have answered our call for surgeons. And the glue that holds us together is always our dedicated Practice Manager, Erin Maurer.

The clinic is going into 2024 with two young, local, full time veterinarians, Dr. Kristan Riley and Dr. Carl Thomas. Look for their profiles in the January issue of Pinestraw Magazine.

Our grant writer, CACF Board member Kate Holmes, has put in another year of finding grants, which help to keep the prices of surgeries down while improving the quality of the equipment. This year, she discovered a new grant which is funded by Duke Energy and administered by Moore County Chamber of Commerce, and she applied for funds to support clinic staff’s continuing education. Andrew Stevens came to the clinic a year ago as a kennel assistant, and has already finished his first year in accredited veterinary technician online program. At the end of the two year program, he will sit for the NC State Veterinary Technician exam to become credentialed RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician). Clarrisa Garcia joined the SNVC in 2021. The course in which she is enrolled will result in a certificate of excellence in veterinary reception. The program outlines veterinary terminology, client relations, and problem solving, finances, programing, among other skills. Clarrisa is bilingual, and her ability to put axious pet owners at ease is amazing.

Our staff is great, the grant writing is successful, and the clients and rescue groups are lined up at the clinic’s doors. The one thing we don’t have under control is the relentless rise of prices for our surgical supplies. The cost of surgical gloves has more than doubled. Our fall fundraiser was rained out, and we are asking our loyal supporters to remember us in their end of year giving. Every litter not born is a one that doesn’t need to be rescued.

Moore County's West Pines Middle School’s 7th grade teacher, Cindy Murphy, has taught her students the art of giving. Her class was given the assignment of researching local charities, selecting one, and raising money for their selection. The Companion Animal Clinic Foundation is honored to be the organization they selected. Last week, Tom Daniel, DVM, owner of the Sandhills Spay Neuter Veterinary Clinic SNVC, and Bobbie Mudge, President of CACF, were invited to the school to receive the check from them. Thank you to these smart students!
