Oyster is as phenomenal as 12-week-old hounds get, but she's not going to set that kind of mood. She's going to set an exciting, life-affirming one that's heavy on oxytocin highs and punctuated with occasional moments of frustration and exhaustion. Even the greatest of the great are a lot of work if they’re puppies. One as pure, eager, loving, and smart as Oyster makes the work easy though if you know what you’re doing. She hoovers up every iota if information you toss her like it’s her job — which it is, she’s a hound, she was literally designed to absorb info and complete tasks. That means she’ll need lots of mental stimulation to keep her growing brain happy. Physical exercise, too. Plan for at least 90 consecutive min of fast paced stuff a day in addition to potty walks. We think this beauty will be around 55 lbs grown, and she’ll need a family with primary care experience, an active lifestyle, and grownups only or kids 12 and up — her teething phase is no joke. Her foster dad says: "Oyster is a super happy, excited, loving, and curious puppy filled to the brim with energy. She loves playing with her toys, snuggling during naptime, and greeting every human she meets. She's definitely in her mouthy phase, so be ready to have a bunch of toys handy. We're working on basic commands, potty training, and leash training, and you can really see she wants to please. She would be perfect in an experienced home ready for the puppy energy and ready to dedicate a bunch of time to training to make her the happiest pup possible. She will also need a TON of stimulation. She loves her food and has no problems with meal time. I've been wrapping her food in a towel for her to seek it out and she seems to really love that. She also loves her crate and hasn't seemed to have much separation anxiety when I leave home. She isn't a fan of elevators and is still figuring out doors opening and closing." NEW DOGS COMING!! FOSTER-TO-ADOPT ONE!! We are working on rescuing 26 puppies and adults right now. Hound and lab babies, a small Schnauzer, a doodle-ish thing, a senior husky mix… it’s hard to happily announce the options because the number and variety of animals in need is incredibly sad. But as always we are excited to meet the individuals we’re able to save. They’re now listed on our website, they will arrive early Saturday morning Sept 17th, and all are eligible for our foster-to-adopt program as of now. The program is a sweet option if you 100 want to adopt, but either you aren't exactly sure which kind of dog is right for you or you want a chance to make sure you can handle it. We have lots of info on this new program also on our website (under the Adopt tab). In a nutshell: You submit an adoption application, you get approved to adopt, you get a week of fostering to make your adoption decision. (We ask that you plan for a two week minimum commitment even if you choose not to adopt.) You'll have the full support of our team the way any foster parent would, and you'll get lots of setup help in advance plus hand holding along the way. We'll guide you from start to finish to help you find your match! PLEASE NOTE: We never know a ton about incoming dogs other than their basic info and that they’re friendly, so you’ll have to be cool with uncertainty and ready for the ride. You’ll be the pup’s first foster home — while we can’t answer questions about things like potty training level, separation anxiety, etc, you’ll have the honor of being the first human the animal trusts in its new life, and you’ll learn a lot together on your intersecting journeys. Interested? Check out the info on our site, submit an adoption application, and email [email protected]!

This week is

Did you know: a sizable portion of the adoptable dogs submitted to be featured on Susie's Senior Dogs] are senior mamas who have been surrendered to the shelter or abandoned after years of breeding. These dogs almost always suffer from mammary tumors after years of not being spayed. A “puppy mill" dog doesn't just mean a true "factory" situation; it can be applied to any dog in any breeding situation that is being bred over and over again for a profit and without care.

Help stop this cycle of cruelty by pledging to adopt your next pet from a shelter or rescue, who you can meet and screen in person and who will let you view the conditions the animals are housed in. Then, do even more by only purchasing pet supplies from stores and websites that don’t sell puppies. Where you spend your dollars makes a difference!

By educating the public concerning the abusive conditions and practices existing, and working with reputable rescue groups, the goal is to effectively end the purchasing of puppies from pet stores and over breeding situations, and by reducing the demand.

URGENT!!! THIS CUDDLY BOXER BOY NEEDS A FOSTER HOME NOW!!! Kona is 1 year old, 46 lbs, and knock-your-socks-off awesome. Super friendly, great with other dogs, mostly housebroken, very playful. He’s comfy in the city but could use a strong human and some leash work because he pulls, zigzags, and jumps a little when he’s excited. Kind of just a big goofy puppy that’s never had any real training or guidance. May also think he’s a pocket pup, he will shamelessly try to crawl into your lap at any opportunity. This handsome, sweet boy needs someone with medium size dog experience who can get him lots of exercise — like 90 min a day plus potty walks. PLEASE HELP!!! Pickup is ASAP, fostering lasts 2 to 4 weeks. If you can give him a temporary home, please submit the foster app at socialteesnyc.org and email [email protected] NOW!!! (Kona is also eligible for our foster-to-adopt program.)

Elegant one minute, a belly up dope the next. Literally — swipe. Mary Lou is the brass ring. The sought after balance of silly and slick. The girl you’ll turn to for laughs, who will kick your butt on occasion, who will have necks swiveling your way on every walk. This 1-year-old heeler mix has it. You want it, she’s got it, get her. You’ll need to be up for the challenge though if you’re going to toss yourself onto the pile of admirers already mounting. Mary Lou is kind and generous of herself, but she’s also discerning. She won’t settle for humans who can’t give her lots of physical exercise (probably more than 90 min a day of quick paced movement) plus brain challenges. She’s a dream for an active family — 45 lbs, housebroken, friendly with other dogs, affectionate, confident. Her foster mom says: “Mary Lou is such a gem! She's basically a puppy. She's very active — definitely not the kind to snooze away all day while you work — and loves keeping busy, whether through lots of puzzle games or brisk walks/jogs. Absolutely loves affection, belly rubs, scratches, the works. Her tail starts wagging the moment she sees you, and usually she'll roll over unprompted to try and get a belly rub out of you before you go about your day — and her baby blues are hard to resist. She's VERY food motivated as well, and also super smart so she picks up commands and your body language quickly. You'll see her personality come out immediately because she's so expressive. Overall a very playful, curious, and energetic pup who's super easy to fall in love with!” Interested in adopting? Submit an application at socialteesnyc.org

Roxbury is elegant in stills, a floppy goofball IRL. She’s very affectionate, sweet, and gentle. This 8–month-old lab/cur mix is also wonderful with other pups — really lights up when she meets a new four legged playmate. Polite and well behaved at home. She’s a little skittish in busy areas so would probably appreciate a home in a quieter hood. We think she’ll be 50 lbs grown, and you’ll want to make sure she gets 60-90 min a day of exercise. Her foster mom says: “Robxury (or Roxy as we call her!) has been such a joy to foster. Roxy walks through the city with so much confidence, has become a snuggly little girl, and must say hi to every single dog we see on our walks. She has learned very quickly, and is almost fully housebroken, as she has now learned to give us a cue when she needs to go (sometimes relies on a p*e pad every now and then). Roxy could play tug of war for hours if your arm could handle it, and her favorite hobbies include trying to pull the squeaker out of her toys, followed by long naps. She enjoys the crate, and loves to just hang out in there. Most recently, we started leaving her outside of the crate when we leave, and she has been amazing with no incidents! Everyone who meets her falls in love, and she will love you back as long as you have some treats for her. She will bring endless joy and love to her forever home!” Contact for more info on Roxbury.

Meet Sundae! A mix, Sundae will make a great jogging and hiking pal. She’s been getting used to going on walkies and loves exploring . Sundae is about 3-5yrs old, 50lbs and up to date on vetting. In typical herding dog nature she is cautious, smart and eager to please. Sundae would do best in a home with teens or adults only. She is shy at first due to her past. She has not been cat tested and while she does well with dogs, if they get too rambunctious her motherly instincts kick in and she lays down the law. Waggy and loving, Sundae looks forward to a sweet future!
