Ramona Heritage Turkeys Beautiful Narragansett Heritage Turkeys: pasture-raised and bred for Heritage Breed Preservation and your family's table.

What started out as a simple desire to raise a few healthy turkeys for my family's Thanksgiving table and connect with our food has evolved into a quest to do our part in helping to preserve a threatened breed of heritage turkeys. Purchasing a few beautiful Narragansett and Blue Slate turkeys in 2015 has led us into a new world of poultry conservation. Our turkeys roost high at night and enjoy a p

astured environment to hunt for their natural diet by day. We supplement their diet only with Modesto Mills Organic, Non-GMO, Non-medicated feed and we rely on their natural habitat and diet to keep them healthy. It is such a pleasure to raise these birds and learn about their social structures, listen to them talk to each other and the wild birds while foraging in the yard, and soon to watch them hatch their eggs and naturally raise their babies. Our Narragansett turkey poults will then be offered for sale and also raised for the family table. The Narragansett turkey is named for Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, where the variety was developed. It descends from the Eastern Wild turkey and the domestic turkey (probably Norfolk Blacks) brought to America by English and European colonists beginning in the 1600’s. Improved and standardized for production qualities, the Narragansett became the foundation of the turkey industry in New England. Though it was valued across the country, it was especially important in Rhode Island and Connecticut. The American Poultry Association recognized the Narragansett in 1874. Narragansett turkeys have traditionally been known for their calm disposition, good maternal abilities, early maturation, egg production, and excellent meat quality.
