If ever there was a time to start adding fresh food, it is now. No matter what age your pet is or what exercise level etc.

Start small but just start. Very often simple small changes are easier to sustain long-term.

Storing foods for longer? Here's my tip.

Use silicone/normal muffin trays to pack and freeze premade fresh or home additions.

These can be popped out once frozen and packed into freezer bags ready to use when needed in convenient portions.

Don't forget to label the bags so you know when it was frozen and what is in it😉.

Yes I know this is not for pets but I am posting it for the underlying message.

Just a reminder that not everything marketed/targeted for pets is suitable. It's up to us as parents to read ingredient labels, research products and ensure our pets are getting the best they need.

9 times out of 10, I can find a more natural and species appropriate option to a prescription food that a client is using. The natural option is usually cheaper, fresher, less processed and more bioavailable. The drawback is that is it also usually more time consuming than the kibble.

So what's the cost of convenience? What health aspects are you willing to trade off on for convenience?

And yes I have also extended this thinking to my kids nutrition. They have never consumed foods branded for babies as I always used the fresh whole food option.

By adding raw to your dogs or cats daily meals is a step in the right direction.... A little raw is better than no raw at all
To feed a small dog breed (up to 8kgs) the cost is under R400 per month and to feed a cat just over R300 per month.

There's lots of confusion between ALLERGY vs INTOLERANCE. An allergy can kill your pet instantly as they have can have an anaphylatic reaction to the allergen. An intolerance will show up as skin issues, digestive upsets etc. They are uncomfortable but rarely result in fatalities.

More often than not our clients see a drastic reduction in symptoms from just adding fresh foods into the diet depending on how severe the case is. We can customise the diet to ensure the right levels of omega 3s and probiotics are included for gut health.

Ditching the ultra processed kibble and tinned food is the first option as it is usually the contributing factor in intolerance cases.

Viennas / hotdogs / sausages

I often see these options as part of foods being fed to dogs and cats or as treats or for training.

Here's why there are a (really) bad idea:

1. Ingredients
These are not species appropriate and there's so many artificial flavours and E numbers added to these foods that they should not be consumed by a pet (not even humans should eat these 🙄 but at least we can make a choice).
Most contain starches and MSG with mixed protein sources. Colourants are also added.

2. Processing
How these foods are made is almost as shocking as kibble production and the processing releases byproducts that can cause irritation for your pet's body.

3. Nitrates
These foods are very high in nitrates and while we may be able to process these in our bodies, our pets have a hard time processing these through their smaller kidneys.

Using these can lead to digestive upsets and kidney and organ damage over time.

Please dont feed these. It will be cheaper to feed fresh REAL meat instead as it's healthier for your pet.
