Contrary to what you have been told kibble does 𝐍𝐎𝐓 clean your dog’s teeth! 👀

Kibble consists of unnaturally high amounts of carbohydrates and starches that convert into simple sugars, which grow and harbour bad bacteria inside your dog’s mouth. Dogs lack the salivary enzyme, amylase, and are unable to break down carbohydrates in their mouth. This essentially attracts plaque and tartar to stick to their teeth and gums.

Humans have flat surface teeth made for grinding but the structure of dog's teeth means they are equipped for ripping and tearing, and then swallowing larger chunks of foods. Raw dental bones that are abrasive enough to scrape any plaque or tartar that is hanging around in your dog's mouth are best fed as a treat approximately twice a week to keep teeth clean.

Many vets are ardently against feeding raw bones unless they lean towards raw feeding and holistic care 🩺. They mostly see dogs with fractured teeth or compaction from incorrectly selected raw bones so here are some rules to help with the safe feeding of bones to your dog:

✅ Choose size appropriate bones. A good rule of thumb is to choose a bone that is bigger than your dog’s head
🦴 If the prey would be hard for the dog (or cat) to tackle naturally, then the bones will be too large and hard for your pet to gnaw in reality.
❌ Do not feed cooked or smoked bones. They are dry, hard and would most likely splinter due to indigestible materials.
✅ Supervise chewing. Ideally, your dog should spend about 30 minutes, 2 or 3 times a week, working on bones for a noticeable improvement in dental health
✅ Don’t feed weight-bearing bones. These bones are dense and can splinter or crack teeth.
❌ Avoid machine cut bones (these can have sharp edges)
❌ Marrow bones are quite hard and can easily fracture teeth

Dental and gum disease is often overlooked yet is so painful and can be very serious for dogs so please do keep on top of this!

Artist, ex vet and Border Collie mom, Bronwyn, is painting these stunning portraits to raise funds for medical treatment for her little Becca.

Becca's story:

The Johannesburg Animal Eye Hospital believes that Becky has a problem with her retinas, and will go blind in the next 18 months to 2 years. There is no known surgical or mainstream medical treatment available.

Bronwyn has started treatment for Becky with some newly available patches to try slow down or reverse the damage. There are no guarantees, and the patches cost a little over R3000 a month.

If you would like to help contribute to Becca's "Magic Stickers", please consider a portrait of your furry friend to be done.

Christmas is around the corner, and perhaps a portrait would make an excellent gift for you or someone close to you? ⭐
