A Tale of me and how I got here..

I am a Registered Dietitian based in Bloemfontein, South Africa. In 2018, my right kidney had to be surgically removed. A blockage caused fluid to accumulate in the kidney, and ultimately caused the kidney to fail completely. Luckily, one can live many healthy years with one kidney.

This led me to intensive research on the best diet to preserve the health of a kidney. My research revealed that a whole food, plant based diet (vegan) diet ticks all the boxes. This is a diet that excludes all food from animal sources such as meat, chicken, fish, milk and eggs. Not only is this the best way to protect my remaining kidney, but it also happens to be the diet that is the most protective against our leading causes of death such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. This transition took a few months and was not always easy, as my previous diet was heavily meat and dairy based.

It has been over a year after the change and I feel like I am finally living in harmony with my myself and my environment. Along this journey, I also learned about the ethical and environmental impact of the human diet. Most of us would describe ourselves as animal lovers, but usually this love only extends to pets in the household and not the farm animals that end up on our plates.

My aim with this page is to educate you on the the intelligence of farm animals, evidence based benefits of the diet, practical tips to make sure you get all the nutrients you need and some delicious recipes to try out.
