Retraining a trail horse – First ride today (totally unplanned, hence the outfit)!

Made plenty of observations and noted several areas to work on. He always leads the canter with the same leg, carries a lot of tension and stiffness, and struggles with rushing through pressure instead of stopping. Forward movement is also an issue, with little to no engagement, weak hindquarters, and a lacking core. He tends to expect the worst, so it’s time to change his mindset. Stay tuned!

To think and dig deeper into behavior, when you are dealing with something like this is actually the answer! This is pain or discomfert and if you are not willing to go digging for answers, sell your horses. Thanks

First session with this guy! A former racehorse starting his training with me.

The first sessions are all about assessing the horse—his mindset, body, and overall state. He’s a typical young horse who might seem pushy at first, but it’s not about being disrespectful. He’s just confused, unsure, and doesn’t yet understand what I’m asking.

His go-to response when stressed is to invade space, get impatient, or just keep running. So, our focus moving forward will be on building his confidence, improving his focus, and conditioning both his body and mind for riding. To help him achieve this, we’ll be reducing pressure-based training and incorporating more positive reinforcement into his routine.

He’s had some time off after the track, which is the best thing for these horses. Excited to see his progress—stay tuned for the journey!

This lady is starting her backing process!

We have been working hard on conditioning her body for the backing process and 2025 is the year!

Studying equine biomechanics has completely transformed my training. It has taught me how to condition and improve the horse’s body for both performance and rehabilitation.

I now see movement limitations not just as training issues, but as signs of underlying physical challenges—and more importantly, I’ve learned how to address them. I can look at a horse and understand what needs careful attention, what can be improved through training and conditioning, and why some horses struggle to do certain movement, tasks and to progress in general.

One of the biggest lessons? Behavioral issues are often linked to physical discomfort, whether from past injuries, weakness, or imbalances. My goal is no longer just to “get the horse there”—it’s to get a happy, sound, and willing horse there. Because in horse performance, everything is connected.

🌟 Backing Shalom Update 🌟

We've faced a few challenges recently after Shalom's adventurous escape, which resulted in her injuring herself and exhibiting aggressive and defensive behaviors due to discomfort. Thankfully, after a thorough chiropractic session and some bodywork treatments, she is back on track!

It’s easy to overlook the signs and apply anthropomorphic labels to our horses' behaviors. However, by training our eyes, educating ourselves, and truly listening to our horses, we can make a meaningful difference in their lives.

While some might dismiss her actions as "naughty" or typical of a mare, it's important to remember that science has shown horses lack the part of the brain responsible for malicious intent. Understanding this helps us approach their behavior with empathy and insight.

Let’s continue to advocate for our equine friends! 🐴❤️

☀️ 🌞 Protect Your Horse: Why UV Protection Matters!

Did you know that horses, especially those with light or pink skin, are vulnerable to harmful UV rays? Just like us, too much sun exposure can cause sunburn, irritation, and even long-term skin damage. Prevention is always better than cure!

🌞 Here’s Why UV Protection is Essential:

-Light-Skinned Horses: Their delicate skin is more prone to sunburn and irritation.
-Prolonged Exposure Risks: Excessive UV can lead to painful burns or skin conditions over time.
-Prevention Made Simple: A quality UV fly mask, sunscreen for sensitive areas (like the nose), and providing shade can save your horse a lot of discomfort.

🌞 Prevention Tips:

-Use horse-friendly sunscreen on vulnerable areas.
-Invest in UV-blocking fly masks or sheets.
-Schedule turnout during cooler parts of the day.
-Always provide shaded areas or shelter.

Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping your horse comfortable and healthy this summer! 🌞
