Retraining a trail horse – First ride today (totally unplanned, hence the outfit)!
Made plenty of observations and noted several areas to work on. He always leads the canter with the same leg, carries a lot of tension and stiffness, and struggles with rushing through pressure instead of stopping. Forward movement is also an issue, with little to no engagement, weak hindquarters, and a lacking core. He tends to expect the worst, so it’s time to change his mindset. Stay tuned!

First session with this guy! A former racehorse starting his training with me.
The first sessions are all about assessing the horse—his mindset, body, and overall state. He’s a typical young horse who might seem pushy at first, but it’s not about being disrespectful. He’s just confused, unsure, and doesn’t yet understand what I’m asking.
His go-to response when stressed is to invade space, get impatient, or just keep running. So, our focus moving forward will be on building his confidence, improving his focus, and conditioning both his body and mind for riding. To help him achieve this, we’ll be reducing pressure-based training and incorporating more positive reinforcement into his routine.
He’s had some time off after the track, which is the best thing for these horses. Excited to see his progress—stay tuned for the journey!

Studying equine biomechanics has completely transformed my training. It has taught me how to condition and improve the horse’s body for both performance and rehabilitation.
I now see movement limitations not just as training issues, but as signs of underlying physical challenges—and more importantly, I’ve learned how to address them. I can look at a horse and understand what needs careful attention, what can be improved through training and conditioning, and why some horses struggle to do certain movement, tasks and to progress in general.
One of the biggest lessons? Behavioral issues are often linked to physical discomfort, whether from past injuries, weakness, or imbalances. My goal is no longer just to “get the horse there”—it’s to get a happy, sound, and willing horse there. Because in horse performance, everything is connected.

Self-carriage
Self-carriage, or natural long and low, refers to a horse carrying itself in a balanced and collected manner without the reliance on training aids or short reins. This allows the horse to develop the strength and balance necessary to carry itself effectively, resulting in improved engagement of the hindquarters and lightness in the front end. On the other hand, being carried with training aids and very short reins may create a false frame and tension in the horse’s muscles, hindering the natural movement and development of proper carriage. While training aids can be useful tools when used correctly, they should not be a substitute for the horse’s own ability to carry itself in a balanced and self-sustaining way.In summary, self-carriage promotes the natural development of the horse’s musculature and balance, while relying on training aids and short reins may restrict the horse’s movement and hinder its overall physical and mental well-being.Some of these guys are still learining long and low on command! #horsesoftiktok #horses #horse #horsegirl #horseriding #horseriding #horsetok #horsetraining
