PARVO VIRUS EXPLAINED. 🔁
‼️ALERT!‼️With the warmer weather, Boksburg SPCA are seeing a marked increase in the number of CANINE PARVO VIRUS cases in UNVACCINATED pups and young dogs up to 9 months of age!
▪︎ Parvo virus primarily affects the intestinal tract ... loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, blood in the p**p.
▪︎ Parvo virus has a 97% mortality rate in unvaccinated pups even with expensive private vet care.
▪︎ Parvo virus is extremely contagious.
▪︎ Parvo virus is very stable in the environment & remains on the ground, walls, cement floors, shoes & clothing for many months.
▪︎ Should you suspect your pup has parvo virus, Boksburg SPCA offer a snap test to determine whether pup positive or negative for parvo.
PARVO VIRUS - PREVENTION.
Vaccination is the only way to protect your puppy against Canine Parvo Virus (CPV).
▪︎ Puppies must have 3 vaccinations 3 weeks apart, from 6 weeks of age to be fully immunised.
▪︎ Until your pup is fully immunised (had all 3 vaccinations in the correct time period) DO NOT socialise with unvaccinated/unknown dogs or walk your pup in public places.
▪︎ Should you suspect your pup has Parvo Virus, Boksburg SPCA can carry out a snap test for confirmation.
▪︎ Due to the highly contagious nature of the Parvo virus and the number of animals in our kennels, Boksburg SPCA WILL NOT admit dogs testing positive for CPV for treatment.
▪︎ CPV has a 97% mortality rate in unvaccinated pups.
▪︎ Should you be unable to afford private vet care, humane euthanasia is recommended to prevent undue suffering.
