‼️URGENT: CANINE DISTEMPER VIRUS OUTBREAK IN BOKSBURG AREA!‼️

Boksburg SPCA alerts the public to an outbreak of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) in the Boksburg area.

▪︎Canine Distemper Virus affects dogs worldwide. It is highly contagious and presents with symptoms such as:
Respiratory issues (crusty nasal discharge), gastrointestinal problems (diarrhea& vomiting), lethargy & loss of appetite, high temperature & neurological symptoms like twitching.

🐾Boksburg SPCA and Canine Distemper Virus

▪︎ Boksburg SPCA accept all animals into our society.
▪︎ The majority of the animals collected or surrendered are unvaccinated.
▪︎ Recently, we have seen a marked increase in the number of animals being brought in or collected within our jurisdiction, showing symptoms of CDV.
▪︎ We remind the public that CDV is preventable through vaccination.
▪︎We urge all pet owners to ensure their dogs vaccinations are up to date.

🐕 Boksburg SPCA CDV Precautionary Measures

▪︎Due to the increased number of dogs coming in showing CDV symptoms and the varied incubation period of the virus, Boksburg SPCA have decided to place our existing animals under quarantine and temporarily close our
SPCA to the public until Monday 20 November 2023.
▪︎ This includes suspending adoptions, adoption meet & greets, private dog sterilisations, vaccinations, microchipping & boarding during this period.
▪︎ Boksburg SPCA Offices will remain open and we will continue taking in animals per our mandate as well as assist with owner request euthanasia.
▪︎ Our Inspectorate will operate as normal.

❤️ How can the Public Assist

▪︎ Closing our SPCA has huge financial implications & the disinfectants required for our kennels are very expensive.
We urge our supporters to assist with monetary donations towards the purchase of F10 Super Concentrate (R1281-73 per 5L) as well as donations of food for our animals.

🐕Dogs in the Community
▪︎ Should you suspect your dog may have Canine Distemper Virus, seek immediate veterinary care.
▪︎ If you cannot afford vet care, please contact Boksburg SPCA on 011 916 5906/7 or 083 763 6311 for assistance.
▪︎ Keep your dogs in your yard and away from strange dogs and public spaces.
