Wild horses

This is my loving tribute to one of the wildest warriors I have ever laid eyes on, who continues to run wild and free in Wyoming's Conant Creek.

I've spent some incredible time with Wyoming photographer/advocate Jim Brown, who has dedicated most of his life to raising awareness for the wild horses in his wilderness backyard. Jim works tirelessly to keep these wild horses where they deserve to be: running free in the high desert.

This is 'Scar'.

Just after dawn one morning this past June, Jim and I found a spectacular herd greeting the day amongst the wildflowers. And there he was, in the flesh. The famous stallion, 'Scar'.

It's easy to see why Jim gave him this name. I was honored to hear Scar's story from the man who has documented him over several years. In 2016, Jim encountered a bay stallion lying on his side. He appeared to be near death. The theory was that he had been severely kicked- the wound on his side was massive.

One of the things that most people would assume about wild horses, is that recovery of an injury this severe would never be possible. But, wild horses never cease to amaze. Their inner spirit and fight to survive is the stuff of legends.

Not only did Scar survive and regain control of his family band, he met yet another challenge head on. Years after sustaining this injury, Jim observed that Scar had lost his right eye.

And so it was, on that beautiful June morning in the high desert, that I saw this warrior peacefully grazing with his family nearby.
You can clearly see the dinner-plate sized scar, long since healed, a testament to this stallion's will and strength, and a testament to the healing powers of mother nature.

We are only touching the surface of what it means to be a wild horse. It's of extreme importance to tell their stories, as individuals, and to be inspired by their right and their fight to exist wild and free.

When you think about wild horses as a whole, think about Scar. I know he's sending a message to all of us.

Just like this wild warrior, we must never give up the fight.
