Feel Good Friday

While rescue work comes with a lot of challenges and heart ache, we receive the most amazing stories from individuals who really care about squirrels in their gardens.

On Tuesday a baby squirrel fell from a nest in Welgemoed. When the home owner found the baby, she immediately took her own animals inside to give mommy a chance to safely retrieve her baby. Keeping baby with mom is always first price in rescue!

After tucking her baby back into the nest, mommy took a much deserved break from the hear (and the naughty baby) on the cool, wet grass 🩷 💚

Thank you for giving this mom and baby a chance!

Note: Never try to reunite injured babies with mom.

The start of 2025 had been unusually quiet... until last night.

Little Fliss was discovered by a lovely family in Vierlanden, very cold and dehydrated. She’s now in the care of one of our rehabbers and will be spending the next few days in an incubator to regain her strength.

If you find wildlife in need of help, please place them in a safe, warm and quiet space, don't give them anything to eat or drink, and send a photo to our hotline right away to be put in contact with a rehabber.

Wild animals are not pets. It is illegal to keep any wildlife in South Africa, without the necessary permits.

We will also not allow requests for fundraising for medical care and special food for wildlife that is being kept as pets.

With wildlife rescue, one accepts the "cruel reality" of nature—squirrels come in with bites from other squirrels, cats, dogs, and raptors all the time.

But then we get heartbreaking cases like the baby below.

𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘁𝘆.

Disguised as kindness. We wanted to raise the baby. The kids wanted to raise a squirrel.

This baby was fed on Weetbix and Oats.

By the time we got to her, she was literally on her last breaths.

𝗗𝗲𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. 𝗘𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. 𝗔𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱.

Her fur hard and dirty.

A block away she had a fit. Another block away, she passed away.

Sobbing. Because none of this was necessary.

If you find any wildlife, get them to a rehabber who knows what they are doing. Raising and rehabilitating wildlife takes time and expertise.

Wildlife are not pets. Wildlife are not toys for your kids. Wildlife deserve wild lives!

𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦. 𝘞𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 66𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘺 5 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺 𝘸𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 120𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 160𝘨.

While we initially had a slow start to this season, it hit us with a bang.

31 squirrels in, with 13 that passed away or were put to sleep.

5 babies died of poison that they ingested from drinking on poisoned moms. We had to put to sleep a baby without back feet, a baby with a broken jaw and a young adult with a broken leg. We lost babies who were just too weak to fight their injuries or who arrived at us just too late to be able to make a difference. Photos after the warning photo.

All in less than a month.

But... We have the cutest babies. Our healthy babies are doing extremely well, which is exactly why we do what we do! And later in the week - we have the most amazing feel-good story to tell you!

Yesterday these four beautiful girls came in from Somerset West. They were found while felling a tree. On intake, they seemed slightly dehydrated and we had to assume mom had not been around for a while.

Unfortunately today two of the girls started to show symptoms of secondary poisoning (drinking on mom while she had poison in her system). All four babies are currently receiving medical attention. Mom also hasn't shown up on the property since Thursday afternoon.

We'd appreciate any contribution to their medical care.

Meet Stan (64g) and Stella (59g)! They are between 10 and 14 days old. These two beautiful, healthy babies came in through one of the veterinary practices - unfortunately we don't have their history.

They both had nice warm milk on arrival and will be spending the next week or two in one of our fantastic, donated incubators.
