Don't feed them, don't give water.

Just keep them warm in a quiet room away from pets and other humans.

17/04/2024

Animal rescue workers, rehabbers, animal shelter workers and animal healthcare professionals, all have more than just their love for animals in common. People in these professions, suffer from high levels of stress-related and mental health disorders, as well as a disturbingly high suicide rate.

According to a study by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the suicide rate amongst these workers is the highest and is shared only by firefighters and police officers.

They are faced with the most horrific cases of abuse and deaths every day. Apart from treating their animal patients, they have to deal with human emotions of excitement, anger and loss. They have to fight for the animals' right to care while taking into consideration the owners' fears, finances, denial and love. As animal care workers, we all spend a lot of time educating people about what is best for the animals. We have been through years of heartbreak, trying new and better ways, and constant research โ€“ focusing on their diets, physical health, psychological health, and social needs - we live and breathe animals. In addition, we also do informational and educational posts and talks.

Then we get to a week like the past week - where we almost want to question the difference we make!

The ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐˜€๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—น you took in when he was a baby and raised him all by himself, struggled to adjust. Despite slowly trying to wean him off the "junk" food he was given, he refused to eat anything that normal "squirrels" eat, and would rather starve. He doesn't understand what a squirrel is, and can't integrate with any others. The kindest thing we could do was to euthanise him.

The squirrel that you "๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—น๐˜†" ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฑ as a baby, based on "Google research" and then dropped off with us when she was 12 weeks old, had to be euthanised. The first thing we noticed was her fur - yip - we can see a baby is sick without even handling it. She was emaciated and suffered from severe metabolic bone disease. Her back was broken, she couldn't urinate and was in a tremendous amount of pain. MBD is something that the correct diet can prevent - wild squirrels rarely get MBD as they know what to eat and when to eat it. But ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ kept this baby alive in ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€!

The squirrel that ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ต๐˜ ๐—ถ๐—ป, died in one of our rehabbers' hands while trying to rush her to get treatment. If you called us when you found her, we would have told you that all cat bite victims need immediate care and antibiotics. But you chose to do the "kind" thing and tried to reunite her with her mom for two days before someone confiscated her and contacted us.

That squirrel that you "kindly" ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป, after your dog brought it in... Someone else picked it up and contacted us. It had a broken back and internal organ damage. It was lying in pain, and suffering until we were able to get it to the closest vet to euthanise it.

When the storm ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜„ over a tree in your yard and you "๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—น๐˜†" ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ for mom to collect outside, your neighbours called us to assist. One of the babies had two broken front legs, the other a broken back leg. They've been outside in the cold and rain and both had pneumonia. The kindest thing we could do was euthanise.

The tiny baby that ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ, despite us asking you not to, not only aspirated while you fed but because her body was so cold and emaciated when you fed her, her organs started to shut down and she died. We know how to avoid refeeding syndrome and we have protocols in place for treating emaciated babies.

Don't do what you see as kind, ๐Ÿ…น๐Ÿ†„๐Ÿ†‚๐Ÿ†ƒ do what's right for the animal and the animal healthcare workers who are trying to make a difference, please!

Every so often, we get a weird and wonderful case in.

On Tuesday we were approached by a family in Somerset-West who found a squirrel with only three legs. We got her in for an X-ray and general assessment. Apart from the missing foot, she appears to be a healthy, active and quite angry squirrel.

We consulted with a number of veterinarian professionals, and everyone agreed she should at least be given the opportunity to be released. We will be introducing her to a few friends this week and see how she integrates and interacts with them, and if all goes well, be released with them. Even in โ€œnormalโ€ rehabilitating squirrels, anything can still happen at this stage, but we are all looking forward to seeing how she adjusts and develops with other squirrels in a bigger environment.

A day in the wild is better than a lifetime in a cage.
