FLOWER SERIES : MARCH BIRTH FLOWER

Jonquils symbolize forgiveness and a desire for affections to be reciprocated. Jonquils also symbolize creativity, success, rebirth and renewal, just like daffodils.

Jonquils come in a range of flower colours including white, cream and bright yellow. They are suitable for nearly all climates and are very reliable in warmer climates where normal Daffodils do not grow well. They are equally good in cooler climates where Winters become extremely cold.

Both Jonquils & Daffodils all fall under the botanical name, Narcissus. Narcissus also often refers to the smaller variety of daffodils. Regionally, jonquils may be called daffodils, but this is botanically incorrect.

There are 13 divisions of daffodils, or Narcissus. Each division has special classifications and specific Narcissus plant info that delineates which class each species falls into. Is jonquil a Narcissus? Yes.

Daffodil bulbs are Narcissus and jonquils are Narcissus. The overall scientific name is Narcissus, and it covers over 13,000 hybrids of both daffodil bulbs and jonquils.

INSECT TALKS

THE BUTTERFLY

Butterflies are great for your garden as they are attracted to bright flowers and need to feed on nectar.

When they do this their bodies collect pollen and carry it to other plants.

This helps fruits, vegetables and flowers to produce new seeds.

Besides being important pollinators, butterflies impact the whole environment.

Their welfare is increasingly compromised by loss of habitat due to deforestation and widespread pesticide use, as well as changes in climate and weather.

By planting butterfly gardens, people can help conserve butterflies as well as other native insects and help perpetuate native plant species.

🐌🐦‍⬛PEST TALKS 🗣

🪲STINK BUGS 🪲

Adults suck and feed on plants with their straw like mouthparts.

Stink bugs attack a variety of fruits, nuts, and vegetables from beans to tomatoes and apples to stone fruits.

Their sucking feeding can cause blemishes in fleshy plant parts and mar plant appearance with drops of dark excrement.

Plants such as mint, lavender, citronella grass, and geraniums all produce strong scents that will repel stink bugs when planted near entryways or windowsills.

Just make sure not to plant too close as the smell could also be unpleasant for your household.

Plus, with some green love, your home will look beautiful.

20/02/2024

Birth flowers, also known as birth month flowers, are flowers that represent each month of the year. They are often associated with certain characteristics or qualities that reflect the individual born in that month.

January: Carnation & Snowdrop.
February: Violet & Primrose
March: Daffodil & Jonquil
April: Daisy & Sweet Pea
May: Lily of the Valley & Hawthorn
June: Rose & Honeysuckle
July: Larkspur & Water Lily
August: Gladiolus & Poppy
September: Aster & Morning Glory
October: Marigold & Cosmos
November: Chrysanthemum
December: Narcissus & Holly

FEB FLOWER : VIOLETS

Viola typically have heart-shaped or reniform (kidney-shaped), scalloped leaves, though a number have linear or palmate leaves.

The simple leaves of plants with either habit are arranged alternately; the acaulescent species produce basal rosettes. Plants always have leaves with stipules that are often leaf-like.

Viola is a genus of flowering plants in the violet family Violaceae. It is the largest genus in the family, containing over 680 species.

Most species are found in the temperate Northern Hemisphere; however, some are also found in widely divergent areas such as Hawaii, Australasia, and the Andes.

How do you care for a Viola plant in South Africa?

In the winter rainfall regions, and other hot and dry regions, it will require summer watering. In most regions of South Africa it will grow happily in semi-shade to full sun, as long as it can be watered regularly.

PLANT DEFICIENCY GUIDE

WHY ARE THESE NUTRIENTS SO IMORTANT?

💪🏼CALCIUM🦴

Calcium is an essential element in plants. It serves as a constituent of cell walls and membranes and thus contributes to the structure of cells and the upholding of physical barriers against pathogens.

🩹HOW TO CORRECT ❤️‍🩹

Cracked-up eggshells can be added directly to your garden to give the soil a calcium boost. This is especially helpful for tomato and pepper plants, as it can help combat blossom-end rot. The sharp edges of the shells can also deter some snails and slugs.

☀NITROGEN⚡

Nitrogen is so vital because it is a major component of chlorophyll, the compound by which plants use sunlight energy to produce sugars from water and carbon dioxide (i.e., photosynthesis). It's also important because nitrogen is a: Major component of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins.

❤️‍🩹HOW TO CORRECT 🩹

Coffee Grounds, green leaves and vegetable scraps are full of nitrogen, and so on. Adding organic matter to soil leads to the rise in organic carbon in it, which is essential for microorganisms living in the soil.

🌋CARBON DIOXIDE 🛢

Plants take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. Some of the carbon is used for plant growth, and some of it is used in respiration, where the plant breaks down sugars to get energy.

🩹HOW TO CORRECT ❤️‍🩹

Brown or woody materials such as autumn leaves, wood chips, sawdust, and shredded paper are high in carbon. You can calculate the C/N ratio of your compost mixture, or you can estimate optimal conditions simply by using a combination of materials that are high in carbon and others that are high in nitrogen.

🪺PHOSPHORUS 🥩

Phosphorus is one of the major plant nutrients in the soil. It is a constituent of plant cells, essential for cell division and development of the growing tip of the plant. For this reason it is vital for seedlings and young plants.

❤️‍🩹HOW TO CORRECT🩹

Organic materials such as composts, green manures and animal manures. These organic materials contain phosphorus mineralized by soil organisms, making this macronutrient easier for plants to use.

Bananas are the gift that keeps on giving if you have a garden. The peels can add nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium to the soil, making them a potent fertilizer. They can also help repel pesky pests like aphids. There are several ways to use banana peels in the garden.

🥜IRON🔩

Iron is an essential nutrient for plants. It functions to accept and donate electrons and plays important roles in the electron-transport chains of photosynthesis and respiration. But iron is toxic when it accumulates to high levels.

🩹HOW TO CORRECT ❤️‍🩹

Garlic & Onion peel is rich in potassium, calcium and iron, which can help the plants grow strong.

🍌POTASSIUM🧅

Potassium is associated with the movement of water, nutrients and carbohydrates in plant tissue. It's involved with enzyme activation within the plant, which affects protein, starch and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. The production of ATP can regulate the rate of photosynthesis.

❤️‍🩹HOW TO CORRECT🩹

Banana peel, garlic and onion peels are rich in potassium, therefore, they can be quite good and make your soil more nutritious. You can directly layer the peels or soak a handful of peels in a liter of water for 3-4 days. After a few days, add a liter of water to the mixture and water the plants with the solution.

🪸MANGANESE🥕

Manganese (Mn) is an important micronutrient for plant growth and development and sustains metabolic roles within different plant cell compartments. The metal is an essential cofactor for the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of the photosynthetic machinery, catalyzing the water-splitting reaction in photosystem II (PSII).

🩹HOW TO CORRECT ❤️‍🩹

Seaweed & Carrot tops are excellent suppliers of manganese. Add them to the compost pile after the harvest.

🍊MAGNESIUM 🍋

Magnesium is the central core of the chlorophyll molecule in plant tissue. Thus, if Mg is deficient, the shortage of chlorophyll results in poor and stunted plant growth. Magnesium also helps to activate specific enzyme systems.

❤️‍🩹HOW TO CORRECT🩹

Citrus peels smell amazing and they can give nutritive value and pest protection to your garden. Orange peels are rich in potassium, nitrogen, calcium and magnesium that can help your plants grow. Citrus peels also contain the compound d-limonene, which has been found to deter pests like aphids. You can place the peels in the soil around plants as well as place torn peels on the branches of aphid-infested plants.

We are selling Carolina 🌶 Reaper Seedlings 🌱

Growing Tips 🌱💦

Carolina Reaper is a fast growing plant and may deplete the nutrients in its soil over time. Replenish them with a gentle organic fertilizer or compost every 1-2 months depending on your location and season. Fertilize more often during the growing season and in warmer and brighter climates.

Like most peppers, Carolina Reapers do best in warm weather but have little tolerance for weather above 29 °C. Overly hot weather can cause them to lose blossoms and stop producing fruit. Carolina Reapers prefer soil with a pH of approximately 6.5.

Water once a week, hot Peppers prefer consistently moist soil. Let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry between waterings to ensure that the roots do not become waterlogged.

Depending on humidity and temperature, watering with at least 3 centimeters of water, once a week is ideal.

Comment 🔥flaming hot🔥 and we will contact you for your Carolina Reaper seedling order.

🌶Carolina Reaper Chile 🌶 The hottest on the planet, scoring a red hot 2.2 million on the Scoville scale.

Chili peppers 🌶 are an excellent source of vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that can help protect the immune system.
Do chilies have more vitamin C than oranges 🍊?

A single cup of chopped red pepper provides a whopping 190mg of vitamin C - almost three times more than an orange.

How important is vitamin C?

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. It's involved in many body functions, including formation of collagen, absorption of iron, the proper functioning of the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.

⚠WARNING🚨

The peppers also contain a very high amount of the chemical compound known as capsaicin, which triggers pain 🥵 receptors 🗣 in our body to feel the sensation of burning 🔥.

Medicinal Uses: Capsaicin has been used in topical ointments, nasal sprays, and dermal patches as an analgesic for minor aches and pains of muscles and joints, including arthritis, strains, and sprains.
