Our pets bring out the best in us so it’s only right that we do the same for them. Having a pet does come with a lot of responsibility though so we’ve put together a quick glance at some of the most common mistakes we as pet parents can make, sometimes things that we’re not even aware of.

Letting your pet get overweight

Many pet owners are sometimes unaware of the fact that their cat or dog could be overweight. What you might see as a little bit of cute chubbiness on your pet could be an early indicator that they are putting on too much weight.
It’s important to be aware of this because being overweight can cause a number of problems for our furry friends. These could be things like; respiratory disorders, orthopaedic disease, chronic inflammation, metabolic conditions and other issues.
By providing enough exercise and feeding the correct diet you are well on your way to keeping your pet in perfect condition, however, if you do feel like your four-legged friend is getting a little round of the edges, you can always consult your local veterinarian for advice.

Neglecting teeth and nails

Another common mistake we make is not caring for our fur kids’ teeth and nails.
Regular brushing is an extremely important part of keeping your pet’s teeth clean and minimising dental issues, which could lead to health problems later on. Make sure to avoid table scraps and keep snacks to a minimum. If you suspect they might have dental disease, please make an appointment with your vet for a dental check-up. If needed, your vet will perform a “dental scale and polish” and also remove loose or damaged teeth and treat gum infections.
Nail care is also more than cosmetic. Long nails can cause pain and in rare cases cause damage to the paw. If left untreated, long nails can deform feet, injure tendons and soft tissues, and cause complications in the leg as the nails place pressure on the foot and leg of your pet. A quick trim now and then can help to prevent foot problems while protecting your pet, you, your family, and your home. Provide a scratch post for indoor cats.

Not socializing and training your pet

Lastly, socializing! Every dog needs basic training and socialization. Socialization allows puppies to get used to things in the environment, like children, other adults, other animals, objects, environments, and various situations. Without proper socialization, dogs can develop fears and phobias. Even worse, the lack of socialization can lead to an array of behaviour problems. Remember, socialization is not just for puppies - you can also socialize adult dogs.
Did you know that a lot of bad behaviour in pets can be solved with exercise? Under-exercised dogs often develop behavioural problems because they’re bored and restless. Many dogs are lacking the heart-pumping, not to mention mentally stimulating, exercise they need. Make sure that you walk your dog regularly (on a leash) and that they have plenty of toys. A scratch post and catnip toys will keep most cats busy!

Had the pleasure of spending the weekend with these adorable furry and feathered friends. The fur kids are absolute bundles of love and affection and the African Grey is a consummate entertainer. Especially loved her reciting ‘step 1 2 3 cha cha cha’. She had me laughing out loud the whole time.

Rescued this injured bat yesterday. Found him curled up on the kitchen floor by the open door. Got quite a fright when I touched the curled up ball of fluff to have it spread its wings and ‘hiss’ at me 🤣🦇. I thought he was a baby because he was so small, but he’s actually fully grown.
Thank you to ReWild and Cape Exotic Animal Hospital in Durbanville for your guidance and medical care.
I phoned this afternoon to check on the little guy. He has had antibiotics and pain killers and is being cared for at home by one of the staff members at Exotic Animal Hospital who is knowledgeable about bats. So thankful that there are organisations with caring members out there to assist the public who want to rescue the injured and abandoned animals that they find. Without them we wouldn’t know where to begin.

Dear Friends
2020 has been a hard and tough year for many of us. We would really like to bless our kennel carers with a little bonus in the form of a box each filled with non perishables, toiletries and a few handy items! They work lovingly and tirelessly every day of the year caring for and loving all the precious furbabies at our kennels. During lunch time, they are often seen cuddling the animals or kicking a soccer ball for the dogs! They are a mommy and a daddy to many of our animals who spend a very long time in our care, making sure they have a warm, soft bed, a full tummy and a smile on their faces! We have 13 carers and if anyone is in the position to buy a little soap, toothpaste, or things like rice, pasta, canned food, samp, mielie meal, deodorant etc to donate towards their bonus boxes we will be genuinely grateful, as will they! All donations can please be dropped off at our kennels in Gordon’s Bay (14 Mansfield crescent) between 10am and 3pm, in a box or bag labelled CLARE CARERS.
