"The City of Cape Town is advising the public to stay away from seals as far as possible, and with immediate effect.

The Western Cape Provincial Veterinary Services has confirmed this afternoon, 7 June 2024, that a Cape Fur Seal off the coast at Big Bay has tested positive for rabies. This seal died on 22 May and the laboratory results came in earlier today.

As such, the public must take extra precaution to stay away from Cape Fur Seals as far as possible, and to not, under any circumstances, allow their dogs close to these animals. This precaution applies to the entire Cape Peninsula coastline.

Any person bitten by a seal is urged to seek immediate medical attention, and to notify the relevant authorities. The same applies to any pet bitten by a seal.

The authorities will continue to investigate and will keep the public informed.

Ball chasing... Friend or foe?
Cue the fun police veterinarian 😜
Any repetitive activity (like ball chasing, agility training, excessive jumping or pivoting and even walking or running on the beach / sand) is really rough on joints and ligaments.
Arthritis is not limited to ageing animals. Any repetitive micro-trauma to a joint will cause arthritis from a young age. Arthritis cannot be cured, only managed.
Look after those joints and ligaments from a young age!

Today is a great day!
The long-awaited Librela injection is finally available in South Africa!

Today almost-14 year old beloved Robbie received his first Librela injection in the comfort of his own home.

Librela is a novel biological therapy for pain management in dogs with osteoarthritis. It has been dubbed "the game changer".

For all my arthritic patients on chronic anti-inflammatories and pain therapies, please enquire about Librela!

Now sing with me: "under my Librela-ela-ela-e-e-e" 😁

Welcome to all the new followers!

Just a few points to help clear up some confusion about the services I offer:
* I am not an ambulance nor can I provide emergency care or care requiring sedation.
Emergencies require a team of professionals with a fully stocked pharmacy and diagnostic equipment to handle appropriately.
* Best way to get hold of me is via WhatsApp text or email; I can't answer my phone while driving or in consultation with other clients.
* Due to my large service area and booked schedule every day, I am usually unable to provide same day appointment requests, therefore my services are inappropriate for sick animals that require intervention urgently (vomiting, lethargic, severe diarrhoea leading to dehydration, any trauma, seizures, breathing difficulty, etc).

I am looking forward to meeting all of you in due course! Keep well and safe.

I've recently met a few elderly doggos who I suspect might have GOLPP.
Here's some more information about this degenerative condition.

I can also highly recommend Dr Mary's books for every household with an ageing doggo or kitty πŸ’šπŸŒΏ

Geriatric-onset laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy (GOLPP). That’s a mouthful!
You may have also referred to this condition as laryngeal paralysis or "LarPar".

GOLPP is most common in geriatric large-breed dogs. It’s a non-painful disease of many nerves (polyneuropathy) that weakens the larynx (the voice box and part of the throat that connects to the windpipe), the esophagus (food pipe), and the legs.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, make sure to discuss them with your veterinarian.

In my book, "It's Never Long Enough", I cover how the voice box relates to breathing, eating, and walking, what causes GOLPP, and treatments.

Today was a great day!

This is Bailey.
Bailey's mum has mastered the art of managing her chronic skin and ear allergies with just diet and topical therapy.

Prevention is everything and acting quickly and immediately at the first signs of a flare up is key.

Bailey's Mum knows and understands each of the products we use and therefore knows exactly which product to reach for when she notices something isn't right.

Also, if Bailey looks familiar, that's because she is! You probably recognise her gorgeous face from many premium pet products!

Another great idea for my cat-parents... Some cats are easier with liquids, some easier with tablets / capsules (remember to follow with food / syringe of water to help it slide down to the tummy).

The key is to start training your kitties ASAP, regardless of if they need meds or not.

Watch how to medicate a cat videos on the Fundamentally Feline You Tube channel for the how to πŸŒΏπŸ’š

This trick is the tip of the iceberg of medicating tricks and possibilities, but it is an excellent and often underutilized tool.

If you need help medicating your cat, I am here to help! However, I cannot recommend enough getting ahead of it and training your cats to take medications BEFORE they need medications. Here is a link to get you started if you would like guidance.
