A little known fact is that today's even marginally overweight, overfed, little exercised, over indulged on organ meat, excessive fats/crazy amounts of non Low GI carbohydrates dog may be tomorrow's dead dog. High starch (a.k.a. sugar) diets will fuel cancer in dogs. That is an absolute fact. When the average dry-fed dog consumes 50% sugar you are asking for it.

SIMPLY PETS Nephos (raw kidney disease diet, low in purines, low in sodium, really low in phosphorus, formulated by a holistic vet who's Chairperson of the Complementary Veterinary Medicine Group. Simply Pets is looking for kidney patients. Simply Pets Nephos is particularly low in phosphorus, at below 0.6g/kg on dry matter basis. Any meat raises this level, thus there are more vegetables in Nephos. Much lower in phosphorus than the other Simply Pets' Optimum and Advanced variants. No bonemeal. Chicken egg shells (including the membrane especially) are good for joints. Together with the Calcium they serve as phosphate binders. Chitosan (Chitin) is another ingredient and also serves as a phosphate binder. Nephos contains ample food based phosphate binders. The vegetable component is also low in phosphates and assists the gut lining. Immunoglobin A (IGA) is where the immune system is stimulated on the mucus membrane level. It serves as the body's primary response to the outside world: mouth, nose, ears, gut, a**s. German Shepherd dogs, for example, often suffer gut and ear issues because they are low in IGA. Simply Pets food is designed to optimally stimulate IGA and gut associated T regulatory cells ("T-reg's") to fight against allergies, autoimmune disorders and disease, and cancer. Every vegetable chosen is important in terms of the body as a whole.

All Simply Pets foods contain only natural antioxidants. These serve as preservatives. Because Nephos has a higher vegetable content, the food oxidises quicker and could become sour quicker than other Simply Pets variants as the vegetables tend to ferment quicker (HT Blanc for Cats also ferments quicker than other variants). This lacto-fermentation (i.e. slightly sour smell) means it actually contains plenty good bacteria (just like sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha and other fermented beverages do). Simply Pets Nephos (for dogs) and Simply Pets HT Blanc (for cats) food must be consumed within two days and the lid must be kept on at all times. To reduce the oxidation you can place a waxed paper or plastic film on top of the food to exclude the exposure to air even further.

Due to the fact that Simply Pets Nephos and Simply Pets HT Blanc oxidise relatively faster than other Simply Pets variants, one can slightly defrost the food by turning the contents of the tub upside down into an oven dish, using a long, sharp knife scrape off the underside and sides which have slightly defrosted to an icey state and place those scrapings in individual ice cube trays and refreeze. Return the balance of the Nephos tub to the refrigerator and serve for that day's meal or for the following day's meal (use within two days of defrosted state).

A word on Simply Pets HT Blanc for Cats: as with Simply Pets Nephos for Dogs HT Blanc is kidney protective. There are often a concomitant kidney issues with hypothyroid feline patients.
