What is a Snuffle mat?
A snuffle mat is a enrichment tool that we can use to entertain our dogs as well as provide some mental stimulation for them.

How to use the snuffle mat?
Simply hide a few dry meaty treats between the "hairs" of the mat and let your dog do the rest. The first time you might need to guide your dogs nose to the mat and show them that there are treats hidden in the mat, but they will catch on easily and enjoy the sniffing experience.

Why do we use a Snuffle mat?
The Snuffle mat is a simulation of how wild canids search for foods in long grass fields. This helps our domestic dog's brains with problem solving (searching for the treats) and also with learning to use their noses( which is great for their brains) in order to find their treats. 15 Min with a snuffle mat can even burn more energy that a walk to the park as using brain power burns more energy that exercise in dogs as most dogs get an adrenaline rush while walking and that can cause them to have more 'energy' after a walk than before the walk. (this does not count in a situation where a proper decompression walk was done).

“It’s possible to help your dog de-stress by channeling her genetic needs into an appropriate direction. Giving your dog an outlet for her genetic needs won’t “teach” her to do more of the problem behavior: her genes already know how to do that! Instead, you can channel it appropriately......

Interesting fact.

Interesting fact.

So, your trainer told you to ignore your dog when they are pestering you, and now it seems like it has gotten worse - what is that about? Well, that is 'EXTINCTION BURST'! 😲

What your trainer means is that you should replace a behaviour you don't like, with a behaviour you do like... but whilst you are doing this, the dog will sometimes exhibit 'extinction burst'. Extinction should never be used as a training method, but it's good to know what is potentially going on when you are training a new behaviour.

Imagine you try your door handle, expecting it to open your door, and instead it doesn't; what do you do? Do you give up, and call the locksmith straight away? No, you try it again! You try it HARDER, you jiggle it more FURIOUSLY (you may even kick or push your whole body into the door to try and open it before you finally admit defeat)!

Often, when this happens, owners give up and therefore end up reinforcing their dog's behaviour again, meaning they learn if it doesn't work at first, they just try harder and they still get the results they want (making it harder for you to deal with later on)...

However, if you continue to reward a more appropriate behaviour, dogs WILL give up and stop exhibiting the inappropriate behaviour, as the reward for the new behaviour is greater than the reward for the old behaviour. At the end of the day, if the door doesn't work anymore, they will learn not to use it!! 👍

A good trainer will always tell you to work with your dog ‘under-threshold’, but what does this really mean? It simply means to not place the dog into a situation where they feel the need to react; a dog that’s not reacting is ‘under-threshold’; a dog that is reacting is over their threshold and therefore stressed, and, as a consequence, unable to learn or listen effectively. 👍

There are two main points to thresholds that are really important (and a third one when dealing with ‘live’ stimulus):

🐾Your dogs… how close can your dog get to a stimulus before feeling the need to react?
🐾Yours… how close can you get to a stimulus before you get worried about what your dog may do?
🐾The stimulus… in the example of a dog reactive dog, if the other dog is a young puppy off the lead, then your dog’s threshold may be significantly greater, as the other dog may rush over to say “hello”.

We are able to tell if our dogs are on the limit of their threshold by observing their body language and vocalisation.

Each situation is unique, so please be aware that your dog WILL react differently, in different situations/on different days/indifferent weather conditions/environments/with different people etc. so make sure you adjust your training accordingly, so it’s fair on them…
