Africanis dogs have been labeled as mongrels, "township dogs," and other derogatory terms. However, as a landrace, they are intelligent, tough, athletic, loving – and ancient.

The Africanis are a distinct type of dog that is only found in southern Africa. They also have a proven lineage that dates back at least 7,000 years.

The Africanis, unlike Western breeds, does not have a rigidly uniform appearance, though there are common traits that define the breed.

The Africanis is primarily the result of natural, rather than human, selection. Unlike Western dog breeds, whose bodies have been artificially shaped by irregular and sometimes cruel Kennel Club standards, Africanis dogs are healthy and treasured for their helpfulness and loyalty. Hence they are called a landrace and not a breed.
