Now that the festive madness is behind us, it’s time for the Happy Hounds team to paws and reflect on an amazing year, celebrate, and have a little fun of our own! 🎉🐾

On Friday, January 24th, our physical store and kitchen will be closing early at 1:30 PM for our end-of-year function. It’s our chance to reflect on an amazing year and celebrate all the moments that made it special. ✨🧡

Our online store will still be open, so you can shop for your pup’s favourites while we’re out. If you need anything in-store, make sure to stop by before 1:30 PM.

Otherwise, we’ll see you on Monday! 🐶✨

You may have noticed the word “treat” on our Venison tubs and wondered if it’s a complete and balanced meal. We want to reassure you that it absolutely is. You can feed our venison recipe as a balanced and complete meal. 🙂

Why does the venison tub say “treat”?
While we were waiting for DAFF certification (which took over 12 months), we were legally required to use temporary labels stating “treat.” To reduce waste, we’re still using some of this packaging before fully transitioning to updated labels that will say “balanced and complete” - because that’s exactly what our venison food is.

This also applies to our newly launched Ostrich protein, which has replaced the Lamb and Venison option. Like all our recipes, it’s a fully balanced and nutritious meal. 🤤

LOOKING BACK ON 2024 – A YEAR MADE SPECIAL BY YOU

As 2024 draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect - and to paws - on what an incredible year it’s been. Thanks to you, our amazing pack members, we’ve celebrated milestones, shared countless wagging tails, and strengthened our mission to bring health and happiness to every Happy Hound. 💛

This year, we’ve grown together, faced challenges, and made the tough decision to pause services in Gauteng, knowing that sometimes, change is part of the journey. Through it all, your trust, love, and dedication to your pups’ well-being have inspired everything we do. 🐶🤗

2024 HIGHLIGHTS - BECAUSE OF YOU

This year, we reached new heights together:

- Served 1,032,729 meals: As of November 2024, we've delivered 1,032,729 meals (calculated based on a 12kg dog), totalling over 154 tonnes of nourishment to our delighted Happy Hounds customers since our launch in June 2020.

- À La Bark Menu: We teamed up with Simon's Restaurant to launch a doggy menu! Bringing the whole family together.

- Dog-livery Vans Hit the Road: Our branded vans rolled out, ensuring your hounds’ favourite meals arrived with care and promptness, and with an extra dose of Happy Hounds love.

- New Protein Launches: We said farewell to Lamb & Venison and Hello to Ostrich. Pups are LOVING our ostrich recipe, and we also introduced our revamped insect protein recipe.
- New Treats Galore: Too many to count - but can you ever have too many options? We think not! From chicken tenders to beef sinew chews, we’ve loved seeing your hounds enjoy all the treato options.

- More Stockists, More Happy Hounds: We partnered with incredible new stockists, helping us bring fresh meals to even more wagging tails.

- Rabies Vaccination Drive: Collaborating with Tamboerskloof Family Vets, we worked to protect hounds in our community.

- Happy Hounds Turned 4: We celebrated our fourth birthday in June - a milestone made possible by your continued love and support.

- So Many Blog Posts: From health tips to behind-the-scenes stories, we expanded our blog to bring you more ways to keep your pups happy and thriving.

We’re thrilled to announce that our brand-new Ostrich meals are now available! After lots of tail-wagging anticipation, the wait is over, and we can’t wait for your hound(s) to dig into this delicious new protein.

Ostrich is lean, packed with protein, and great for pups with allergies or sensitive tummies. This new protein will bring even more variety to your dog’s meals and is perfect for pups needing a leaner meal. Plus, Ostrich will be available year-round - no more seasonal waits!

Happy Hounds

My life is made more delightful with my pack of rescue dogs. But it really started to bother me that I had to add things to their pellets, like gravy, olive oil etc to encourage them to eat. I then started to think about how I like to live my life, to tread gently in the world, eating organic food, no plastic and when eating meat to eat ethically farmed meat that is pasture fed. This got me thinking, the mass production of pellets, is this not adding to the mass farming of animals and mono farming with pesticides? Why would I do this to the planet and feed my dogs food that is potentially filled with hormones, antibiotics and pesticides!

So, Happy Hounds was born. I source ethically farmed pasture fed meat, organic veg from micro farmers in Cape Town and armed with loads of research, I started to make my own dog food for my pack. It is filled with protein, fibre, minerals, vitamins and Omegas, no grain, no bulking, no additives. My life changed as I watched my dogs literally pirouette out of the door at meal times to their bowls. They are shinier, sparkly eyes and literally happier! They are more playful and fun to be with. I started to share with a few friends and bingo, I started taking orders. Happy Hounds, Happy Planet!

So, it is cooked food, filled with love. For now it comes in 500g, 1kg to come soon. It is R40 for a 500g tub if a week’s supply is ordered. Within the City Bowl it is free delivery, otherwise it is R25 delivery. The flavours depend on the meat that is available, I am not buying just any meat, but what is available at the farms.
