🐯 Update on TOBY the trouper // Still looking for his forever home!

What a road we have walked with this little man! And he remains cheerful, affectionate and adorable throughout. At the end of October TOBY had the hardware (pins and wires) removed from his knees, and he's now in the finally final stretch of his recovery from his patella luxation surgery. He has another 3 weeks of "bed rest" ahead of him to give his bones a chance to fully heal and harden, and then he will be good to go!

Based on the most recent X-rays the operation was a great success, and has set the little man up for a mobile, pain-free life.

We are so grateful for the continued specialist care and attention from Dr Frans and his team at Vetscape Animal Hospital as well as his physio treatment from Nicole Barr at Cape Animal Physiotherapy. Little Toby really is in the best hands with this team on his side!

And now he needs his forever home! Toby is 10 months old and immediately rolls onto his back for tummy tickles when he sees you, and chirps in reply when you talk to him. He is far too social and inquisitive to be an only cat, so he is ideally suited to a home with feline companions. If he sounds like your forever tiger, please get in touch.

For more information or to arrange to meet TOBY please complete our adoption application form https://forms.gle/5XnJs2fZ4ewUHiFE7. All the information you need is in the form and we will call you to discuss further once we have all your details 😊.

Meet TOBY the tiger 🐯

We are so happy to finally be taking applications for TOBY's adoption. Toby is the sweetest, most good-natured tabby boy. He charms everyone who meets him β€” just wait until you see his big, soulful eyes.

Toby is our patella luxation surgery patient. We had his dislocating knees successfully repaired in August, and he has handled his recuperation and rehab like a champ, even though he would much rather be playing. At the end of October he'll have a few of the pins removed, and at that point we expect him to get a clean bill of health, and to proceed with life as a typical kitten. Which means he needs his forever home!

Toby is 10 months old and immediately rolls onto his back for tummy tickles when he sees you. He is a great napper, and will lie next to you in a comfortable position for as long as you like, purring loudly. But his great love is playing with his toys or the resident felines, and preferably both together. He is a champion footballer, and loves chasing a spring β€” so is counting the days until he can play with springs again.

He is far too social and inquisitive to be an only cat, so is ideally suited to a home with feline companions.

TOBY news! 🐯

Tiger Toby is coming up for 6 weeks post op and he is doing so well. He's been able to be out and about in a whole room β€” we moved everything out of it that he could jump on, because jumping is still banned! He's been very patient with us and just loves the attention and cuddles he gets. From next week he'll start interacting with other cats again in a highly controlled way, as well as being able to get a bit more exercise and a change of scenery. His next big milestone is at the end of September, when 8 weeks post op we'll take him back to Vetscape Animal Hospital for X-rays and a check-up.

Meanwhile, his physio with Nicole at Cape Animal Physiotherapy continues well, and his little socks are growing back nicely. All things going as expected, Toby will be available for adoption in a few weeks’ time.

Meet FIONA πŸ€πŸ–€

Fiona is a quiet, shy and affectionate girl. She makes a great chill-out buddy, loves naps, will curl up next to you, and loves sitting on your lap when you are working from home.

When chill time with her human is over, she loves watching the world go by out the window, and working off some energy with impressive zoomies. She has an independent streak too, and will find a comfy spot to nap in if there's no lap around.

⭐️ We need your help! ⭐️
We are in the process of closing down (see our pinned post for details) and we need to find homes for the cats still in our care. However we are reaching fewer people online because our social media activity has decreased. Please can you help us by liking, sharing and commenting on this posts, and telling friends and family about our cats looking for their forever homes.

For more information or to arrange to meet FIONA please complete our adoption application form https://forms.gle/5XnJs2fZ4ewUHiFE7. All the information you need is in the form and we will call you to discuss further once we have all your details 😊.

🐱 LUNA CAT RESCUE NEWS
After 3 years and more than 600 cats and kittens rescued, rehomed and sterilised, we are closing operations at Luna Cat Rescue this year.

We are doing this with many mixed emotions and the decision has not been taken lightly. Our hearts are heavy knowing that there are still so many cats and kittens that need rescuing, and so many welfare organisations that are overburdened and under-resourced.

We’ve made this decision for a number of reasons, all of which come down to changing personal circumstances that mean we are unable to operate at the level we would like to. Compromising on the fostering and adoption service and quality that we are known for was simply not an option for us.

What closing down will look like
We’re not a shelter, instead we have a network of foster homes across Cape Town which we will phase out. We will continue supporting active foster humans and their fosterlings, and working hard to find homes for our remaining cats and kittens. Beyond that, we’ll support our adopters with sterilisations and general help and advice, and will be their first port of call in the unfortunate situation where a cat needs to be returned to us.

We are not closing for financial reasons, so one of the last things we will do is donate any remaining funds to another cat welfare non-profit, as well as any equipment, medication and food etc.

This process is not going to happen overnight. But we wanted to tell you now, so that our decreased activity is not alarming. We have already shared this news with our partners, including Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Animal Rescue Organisation, to give them some time to start putting other plans in place come kitten season.

While we are of course heartbroken by this decision, we are also filled with gratitude when we look back at our journey. So many of you have supported us on social media, donated to our causes, fostered and/or adopted from us. Many of you called asking for advice, trusting us with your precious animals, and we have dedicated countless hours to improve the lives of all the cats in our care and network. We are proud of what we have achieved in just 3 years. Thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way.

If you need to get hold of us, our contact details remain the same:

Meet BADGER πŸ–€πŸ€

Does your home need a feline manager? You know it does! And we have the perfect candidate for you.

Meet Mr BADGER. This gentleman cat spends time each morning and afternoon patrolling the perimeter and surveying the neighbourhood from a high vantage point. He also checks in with his feline friends, but never goes too far from home.

When it's home time, he is very excited to see his humans so he can tell you ALL about his day: the comings, the goings, the gossip. But this is unlikely to include any stories about hunting (or any gifts of prey). Badger is a gentle giant and a lover, not a fighter!

Then Badger's next shift starts. When he's in indoor cat mode, he is very involved in whatever is going on, supervising daily chores, cooking and watching TV.

And when it's nap time after all this hard work, he stays close by his humans too. He loves pets, but is not a big fan of being picked up. He definitely needs love, attention, and affection.

He quickly learns the household schedule, and will let you sleep a bit later on weekends, unless his breakfast is severely delayed. Then he'll gently, but firmly, encourage you to fill up his kibble and generally seize the day. He's a patient, chilled, tuned-in little guy.

We can't believe this beautiful boy hasn't found a forever home yet. He's the perfect mix of everything you would want in a feline household manager!

For more information or to arrange to meet BADGER please complete our adoption application form https://forms.gle/5XnJs2fZ4ewUHiFE7. All the information you need is in the form and we will call you to discuss further once we have all your details 😊.

Meet CALLIE 🐱

We can't believe this gorgeous tortoiseshell girl hasn't found her forever home yet, but we know it's out there. Callie is a hoot. She is entertaining, affectionate, involved, very smart and somewhat co-dependent, so definitely needs a home where she has company during the day.

She is super high energy and playful and loves a game of hide and pounce β€” so pay attention when you walk around corners! She loves playing with humans and her dangly toy. She quickly becomes the household's timekeeper and will let you know when it's meal times and time for bed. She's a chatty girl when she needs to let you know something.

Callie loves attention and human contact, but is very egalitarian and will share her love between all the humans β€” no favourites here! She'll wait until you are settled on the couch or bed, and then will perch herself on top of you, ideally under a cosy blanket.

She's not that excited about exploring the world. If she can look out a window or lie in the sun, she's happy. She's more interested in seeing what is in your shopping bag or on your plate.

If this sounds like your forever cat, come meet her and get to know her more.

Thank you from Toby! 🐯

Thank you to everyone who contributed to Toby's patella luxation surgery. We are blown away by your kindness and have been able to raise what we needed.

Thank you again Vetscape Animal Hospital and Dr Frans van Heerden for their discount on the surgery fee.

Toby is recovering well. His stitches are out, which means his cone can come off! And his little tabby tiger stripes are growing back on his hind legs. He is still on cage rest with no jumping allowed β€” just over 3 weeks to go until he can run free and jump to his heart's content.

From Toby, plus the Luna Cat Rescue team

Quick update on SUNNY 🌻

Her sterilisation went well on Friday. We are cautiously hopeful we have improved her leaking and recurring UTIs, but we do need to give it a bit of time and have everything confirmed when we have her stitches out in 2 weeks. It's a complicated case, so it's hard to give clear-cut answers at this point.

Meanwhile, Sunny is eating, drinking, and resting up, very glad to be home after her adventure.

We'll keep you posted with any news!

TOBY UPDATE! 1 week down, 5 to go!🌻

It's just over a week after his patella luxation surgery Animal Hospital and Mr Toby "Toe Beans" is recovering well. He's made it through his first week of cage rest and no jumping. Although he's missing being involved with anything and everything, and missing playing with his friends, he getting lots of love, attention, and supervised time without his cone, which is mostly making up for it. He's rocking his fluffy boots, chicken legs, and sunflower cone (thanks to β€” stand by for a video of the cone on stories soon!).

Toby also started physio with Nicole Barr Cape Animal Physiotherapy this week, and we'll update you on his sessions soon.

We are still raising funds to pay for Toby's surgery. Please donate if you can β€” here are the details. A big thank you to everyone who has already donated.

TOBY'S in surgery! 😷

UPDATE: Toby's surgery was successful ❀️ He's staying in the care of the Vetscape team until Sunday, and we'll have more news then. Thank you to everyone for your support for the little guy 😻

Never a dull moment with this little tabby boy! When we shared yesterday's update we thought his specialist visit today was going to be an assessment and discussion of the next steps. Instead, when Vetscape Animal Hospital β€˜s Dr Frans van Heerden examined Toby this morning he said he needed surgery as soon as possible. So Toby is having both his knees operated on now!

Dr van Heerden explained that not only were the ligaments too loose, his femurs and tibias weren't aligned, and that was causing the kneecaps to dislocate. This means he needed more specialist surgery than a typical patella luxation repair, and we are so grateful to Dr van Heerden for being able to operate today already. Because Toby is young and strong, the sooner we operate the better his recovery will be.

Dr van Heerden also gave us an extremely generous discount on Toby's treatment, which made it possible for us to do the surgery today. We have already covered most of the cost thanks to a private donor, but need another R7,500 to make up the remainder.

If you are able, please donate to Toby's operation and treatment:

Update on TOBY and his trick knees 🐯

Tomorrow is a big day for Toby! We're taking him to the orthopedic specialist at Vetscape Animal Hospital to have his knees assessed and X-rayed to investigate his luxating patellas. Toby currently isn't in any pain and is as agile as any cat, but long term, if left untreated, he is likely to develop osteoarthritis and suffer from pain and reduced mobility. Tomorrow we'll find out if the cause is due to the ligaments, bone structure, or both. And we'll be able to plan a way forward for him β€” most likely surgery.

Until now we've been monitoring him and he has been getting weekly physio treatment from Nicole Barr at Cape Animal Physiotherapy.

Toby is the sweetest, most affectionate, inquisitive little guy. He loves long naps in front of the heater during the recent cold spell, and is a champion football player, and gives all his foster siblings a run for their money.

Meet our ABC virtual litter πŸ”€

They've never met, and are in different foster homes, but these 3 teen/adult foster cats make the cutest virtual litter β€” Abby, Badger and Callie... ABC!

They're each looking for their individual forever home this winter. Please share this post to spread the word, and get in touch if you want to meet one of them.

ABBY is the most chilled cat. She's easy-going, understands boundaries, and still has all the fun. She definitely needs her forever home to be a multi-cat household β€” she fits in so beautifully with her foster siblings and loves the feline company.

BADGER is a gentle giant, chilled out, cool and confident guy with the biggest heart to go along with those stylish tuxedo good looks. He spends a lot of time snoozing and dozing, and loves a play or two, but isn't off-the-wall bonkers. His ideal home will have plenty of secure, outside space, because Badger is definitely an indoors-outdoors cat.

CALLIE is a pretty tortoiseshell girl and a real all-rounder. She is either striving for maximum relaxation, snuggled up under the blankets on the couch or in the bed. Or she is go-go-go playing with her toys. She loves chasing her bouncy balls and her feathery bird toy.

For more information or to arrange to meet ABBY, BADGER or CALLIE! please complete our adoption application form https://forms.gle/5XnJs2fZ4ewUHiFE7. All the information you need is in the form and we will call you to discuss further once we have all your details 😊.

ABBY is the most chilled cat. She's easy-going, understands boundaries, and still has all the fun. She definitely needs her forever home to be a multi-cat household β€” she fits in so beautifully with her foster siblings and loves the feline company.

Although she's also independent, if she's been along for a bit she wants all the love. She starts purring as soon as you talk to her or look in her direction. She loves attention and being held, as long as she can see over your shoulder! And if you scratch her in the right spot she'll flop on the floor, purring and asking for all the love.

Abby loves to pounce attack any toy and is very good at catching flies!

Help Cape Town's COMMUNITY CATS this Mandela Day πŸˆπŸˆβ€β¬›

βœ… UPDATE: We're donating R2,000 to the Feral Cat Project. Help us match that! (If 30 people donate R67 we'll be there!)

Every Mandela Day we are so grateful for the many offers of help we get from our supporters. But because we're not a typical shelter where you can come visit cats & kittens, and help us with mucking out litter trays, we don't need hands-on volunteers. (Instead, we work with a network of foster homes in the Cape Town CBD, Atlantic Seaboard, and Southern Suburbs.)

This Mandela Day we want to do things a bit differently. We would love for you to donate to our friends at the Feral Cat Project Cape Town. Give them R67 (or more!) to support their important work sterilising and caring for community cats around Cape Town.

To keep things easy, please donate directly to them:

Account name: Feral Cat Project
Bank: FNB
Account number: 62913182705
Trust registration: IT000154/2020(C)
PBO 930075496

(Or via the SnapScan code in the post.)

We are proud of the work we do to rehome cats & kittens. But we also care deeply about solving the underlying problem of there being too many homeless animals. We never adopt cats into communities that are already over-burdened and under-served, and we help with sterilisations of non-Luna cats. This is why the work that the Feral Cat Project does is so close to our hearts!

Did you know that if you see a cat outdoors and the tip of its ear is trimmed, it means the cat has been sterilised by an organisation like the Feral Cat Project!

The other thing you can do this Mandela Day, is book an appointment to have your unsterilised pets sterilised! And encourage your friends and family to do the same. You must sterilise both your male and female pets β€” your male cats and dogs will roam to find a mate, possibly getting lost, injured, or killed. Plus, even though you don't see the litter, they still contribute to unwanted animals.

Contact the Feral Cat Project, Mdzananda Animal Clinic, Animal Rescue Organisation, Cape of Good Hope SPCA, or PDSA - SA if a private vet is not in your budget. This simple act can prevent generations of suffering and help relieve overloaded animal welfare organisations.

Thank you for your ongoing support for us and our friends!
