Sunny is back home ❤️

But it has taken us a few days to process the heartbreaking reality that, despite everyone’s best efforts, there was no way to surgically fix her leaking and repeated UTIs 😔

All the tests we did on her indicated that a surgical repair should be possible, but as is sometimes the case, imaging can only reveal so much. A full understanding comes when seeing the anatomy firsthand. During the procedure, Dr. Brandan Janssens discovered that Sunny was born without a urethra — her bladder empties directly into her va**na. Because of this extremely rare congenital condition, surgical reconstruction was simply not an option.

While this news is very disappointing, we find comfort in knowing that we explored every possible option for her. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Brandan and his team at Vetscape for their expertise, care, and dedication to helping Sunny.

For now, our focus is on keeping her happy, comfortable, and as healthy as possible. Sunny will stay in her loving foster home, where she is adored by her human and feline family. She has thrived there over the past year, and we know this is where she belongs.

To everyone who donated, shared her story, sent well wishes, and supported her — thank you. We wish we had better news, but please know that Sunny is happy, safe, loved, and being given the best life possible.

With gratitude,
The Luna Cat Rescue Team

SUNNY'S GETTING SURGERY! 💕

It's a big week for Sunny next week. After her tests and procedures in early January, Dr Brandan Janssens at Vetscape Animal Hospital has enough information to operate on Monday and repair her very unusual urinary tract. The urinary tract of a cat is very delicate and fiddly, and he wanted to be absolutely sure this was her best chance at a long and happy life. The tests in January show that it is.

Meanwhile, since her last hospital stay, Sunny has had a relaxing three weeks in her foster home, playing with her foster siblings. She is a strong and healthy girl, with a big personality, and we are so happy she is getting this chance at a long life.

Thank you again to everyone who donated to make this happen, and we'll keep you posted on her surgery and her recovery.

Update on SUNNY 🌞

Our girl SUNNY is resting up at home after a very eventful few days. She underwent more tests and procedures than we anticipated this week to conclusively identify what is causing her leaking and repeated urinary tract infections. But we have an answer! We're now waiting for confirmation of the outcome from a radiology consult, and then Sunny will finally have the operation she needs. Meanwhile, she's come home to decompress, recharge, and relax with her foster siblings (and a very relieved foster human) until we get a date for her op.

Thank you again to everyone who donated to make this happen, and we'll keep you posted on her surgery and her recovery.

🤕 IT'S SUNNY'S BIG SURGERY ON MONDAY!

It's a big day for Sunny on Monday, when she has life-saving surgery that will hopefully solve her leaking and repeated urinary tract infections for good. Thank you to everyone who has already donated to her surgery. We really appreciate it.

We still need a few more donations to reach the R6,000 we'd like to fundraise for her surgery. You can read the update on Sunny, her condition, and her treatment in the previous posts.

And here's a cute retrospective of Sunny as a kitten — what a road we have walked with this adorable little girl.

We still need donations to reach the R6,000 we'd like to fundraise for her surgery in January. You can read the update on Sunny, her condition, and her treatment in the previous post, but the summary is, she needs specialist surgery to prevent the ongoing urinary tract infections, which are likely to eventually damage her kidneys and be fatal.

SUNNY UPDATE 💕

Remember our pretty dilute calico fosterling, Sunny? We were investigating her suspected ectopic ureter which caused her to leak urine and suffer from ongoing urinary tract infections. She's been living her best life in foster care and behind the scenes, as she gets older and bigger, we have been exploring what can be done for her long-term. Even though she is happy and healthy now, ultimately the recurring bladder infections could travel to her kidneys and be fatal.

So far, we have ruled out an ectopic ureter, a congenital malformation of the ureters between the kidneys and bladder. We have also narrowed down the issue to an unspecified malformation between the bladder and the outside world.

The next step is a specialist procedure where Sunny's lower urinary tract will be scoped, and during the exploration, the deviation will be surgically repaired. At the start of January, Dr Brandan Janssens at Vetscape will operate on her to do this. Because there is still some exploration involved, we don't know what we don't know, but we are hopeful that if everything goes according to plan, this will prevent future infections, stop the leaking, and allow Sunny to have a normal life.

Our funds are low though, because we haven't been fundraising since we announced that we are closing Luna Cat Rescue this year. Each of the core team is contributing to the operation in their personal capacity, which will cover the bulk of the cost — she's been with us for so long and is our last fosterling so we wanted to give her this chance to have a long, comfortable, regular life. But we also want to ask our community for contributions to R6,000 of the cost of the operation.

We know it is a tough time of year to be asking for money. Any amount will help and be gratefully received. If you are able, this is how you can donate to Sunny's operation:

TOBY UPDATE: Toby in his new home 💕

What a journey our boy Toby has had, and he has stayed the same, sweet, cuddly, chilled, friendly guy the entire way through his surgeries and cage rest. So we are so happy that he has settled beautifully into his forever home, where he is being thoroughly spoilt and loved.

He's making friends with the resident tabby cats, exploring the house to find all the best sunbeam positions, and training his humans to do his bidding. And he has plenty of his beloved spring toys to play with.

He's recovered so well from his patella luxation surgery, and now that he is free range again, is gaining strength and mobility very quickly. He's a smart guy, and never goes beyond his limits as he gets stronger and more confident. He also takes plenty of naps in between to boost his recovery and gains!

We're so happy to see him so happy in the perfect home for him. Thank you again to everyone who has followed his story, donated to his surgery and care, and especially to Dr Frans and team Animal Hospital for the specialist surgery, and Nicole Barr and Animal Physiotherapy for his rehab.

💞 ADOPTED 💞

Meet LUIGI ❤️

Although nothing has changed with our plans to close down this year, this little guy fell into our laps recently, and we decided to give him the best chance to find his perfect forever home.

Luigi's story:

Steffi is training at Penzance Veterinary Clinic as a veterinary nurse. One afternoon little Luigi arrived at the practice, weighing only 360g. He was full of fleas, had Feline Herpes Virus (also called snuffles), which was left untreated and had unfortunately caused one of his eyes to rupture. The poor guy was also malnourished and very dehydrated. And Steffi simply couldn’t say no 😉.

Steffi nursed him back to health and got him up to 560g which is when he was able to have enucleation surgery to remove the eye. Luigi is a feisty little fighter though, and as soon as he started getting proper care, he bounced back and took everything in his stride.

So much so, he soon needed to be with other cats to start using up some of his energy, and learn manners and the ways of the cats to avoid single kitten syndrome. He moved to Vanessa, who has resident cats who are very experienced at training fosterlings, and Luigi is living his best life. He weighs more than a kilogram, and has an endless supply of cats to tackle and chase. He has been a lovely companion and distraction for Toby, our orthopedic surgery patient who is almost finished his recovery.

Luigi has recovered completely from his eye surgery, and doesn't seem to notice the loss of one eye at all. It certainly hasn't slowed him down!

Now it's time to find this little fighter his perfect forever home. Luigi is 9 weeks old.

For more information or to arrange to meet LUIGI please complete our adoption application form https://forms.gle/5XnJs2fZ4ewUHiFE7. All the information you need is in the form and we will call you to discuss further once we have all your details 😊.

💞 ADOPTED 💞

🐯 Update on TOBY the trouper // Still looking for his forever home!

What a road we have walked with this little man! And he remains cheerful, affectionate and adorable throughout. At the end of October TOBY had the hardware (pins and wires) removed from his knees, and he's now in the finally final stretch of his recovery from his patella luxation surgery. He has another 3 weeks of "bed rest" ahead of him to give his bones a chance to fully heal and harden, and then he will be good to go!

Based on the most recent X-rays the operation was a great success, and has set the little man up for a mobile, pain-free life.

We are so grateful for the continued specialist care and attention from Dr Frans and his team at Vetscape Animal Hospital as well as his physio treatment from Nicole Barr at Cape Animal Physiotherapy. Little Toby really is in the best hands with this team on his side!

And now he needs his forever home! Toby is 10 months old and immediately rolls onto his back for tummy tickles when he sees you, and chirps in reply when you talk to him. He is far too social and inquisitive to be an only cat, so he is ideally suited to a home with feline companions. If he sounds like your forever tiger, please get in touch.

Meet TOBY the tiger 🐯

We are so happy to finally be taking applications for TOBY's adoption. Toby is the sweetest, most good-natured tabby boy. He charms everyone who meets him — just wait until you see his big, soulful eyes.

Toby is our patella luxation surgery patient. We had his dislocating knees successfully repaired in August, and he has handled his recuperation and rehab like a champ, even though he would much rather be playing. At the end of October he'll have a few of the pins removed, and at that point we expect him to get a clean bill of health, and to proceed with life as a typical kitten. Which means he needs his forever home!

Toby is 10 months old and immediately rolls onto his back for tummy tickles when he sees you. He is a great napper, and will lie next to you in a comfortable position for as long as you like, purring loudly. But his great love is playing with his toys or the resident felines, and preferably both together. He is a champion footballer, and loves chasing a spring — so is counting the days until he can play with springs again.

He is far too social and inquisitive to be an only cat, so is ideally suited to a home with feline companions. If he sounds like your forever tiger, please get in touch.

For more information or to arrange to meet TOBY please complete our adoption application form https://forms.gle/5XnJs2fZ4ewUHiFE7. All the information you need is in the form and we will call you to discuss further once we have all your details 😊.

TOBY news! 🐯

Tiger Toby is coming up for 6 weeks post op and he is doing so well. He's been able to be out and about in a whole room — we moved everything out of it that he could jump on, because jumping is still banned! He's been very patient with us and just loves the attention and cuddles he gets. From next week he'll start interacting with other cats again in a highly controlled way, as well as being able to get a bit more exercise and a change of scenery. His next big milestone is at the end of September, when 8 weeks post op we'll take him back to Vetscape Animal Hospital for X-rays and a check-up.

Meanwhile, his physio with Nicole at Cape Animal Physiotherapy continues well, and his little socks are growing back nicely. All things going as expected, Toby will be available for adoption in a few weeks’ time.

💕 ADOPTED 💕

Meet FIONA 🤍🖤

Fiona is a quiet, shy and affectionate girl. She makes a great chill-out buddy, loves naps, will curl up next to you, and loves sitting on your lap when you are working from home.

When chill time with her human is over, she loves watching the world go by out the window, and working off some energy with impressive zoomies. She has an independent streak too, and will find a comfy spot to nap in if there's no lap around.

⭐️ We need your help! ⭐️
We are in the process of closing down (see our pinned post for details) and we need to find homes for the cats still in our care. However we are reaching fewer people online because our social media activity has decreased. Please can you help us by liking, sharing and commenting on this posts, and telling friends and family about our cats looking for their forever homes.

🐱 LUNA CAT RESCUE NEWS
After 3 years and more than 600 cats and kittens rescued, rehomed and sterilised, we are closing operations at Luna Cat Rescue this year.

We are doing this with many mixed emotions and the decision has not been taken lightly. Our hearts are heavy knowing that there are still so many cats and kittens that need rescuing, and so many welfare organisations that are overburdened and under-resourced.

We’ve made this decision for a number of reasons, all of which come down to changing personal circumstances that mean we are unable to operate at the level we would like to. Compromising on the fostering and adoption service and quality that we are known for was simply not an option for us.

What closing down will look like
We’re not a shelter, instead we have a network of foster homes across Cape Town which we will phase out. We will continue supporting active foster humans and their fosterlings, and working hard to find homes for our remaining cats and kittens. Beyond that, we’ll support our adopters with sterilisations and general help and advice, and will be their first port of call in the unfortunate situation where a cat needs to be returned to us.

We are not closing for financial reasons, so one of the last things we will do is donate any remaining funds to another cat welfare non-profit, as well as any equipment, medication and food etc.

This process is not going to happen overnight. But we wanted to tell you now, so that our decreased activity is not alarming. We have already shared this news with our partners, including Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Animal Rescue Organisation, to give them some time to start putting other plans in place come kitten season.

While we are of course heartbroken by this decision, we are also filled with gratitude when we look back at our journey. So many of you have supported us on social media, donated to our causes, fostered and/or adopted from us. Many of you called asking for advice, trusting us with your precious animals, and we have dedicated countless hours to improve the lives of all the cats in our care and network. We are proud of what we have achieved in just 3 years. Thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way.

If you need to get hold of us, our contact details remain the same:

💕 ADOPTED 💕

Meet BADGER 🖤🤍

Does your home need a feline manager? You know it does! And we have the perfect candidate for you.

Meet Mr BADGER. This gentleman cat spends time each morning and afternoon patrolling the perimeter and surveying the neighbourhood from a high vantage point. He also checks in with his feline friends, but never goes too far from home.

When it's home time, he is very excited to see his humans so he can tell you ALL about his day: the comings, the goings, the gossip. But this is unlikely to include any stories about hunting (or any gifts of prey). Badger is a gentle giant and a lover, not a fighter!

Then Badger's next shift starts. When he's in indoor cat mode, he is very involved in whatever is going on, supervising daily chores, cooking and watching TV.

And when it's nap time after all this hard work, he stays close by his humans too. He loves pets, but is not a big fan of being picked up. He definitely needs love, attention, and affection.

He quickly learns the household schedule, and will let you sleep a bit later on weekends, unless his breakfast is severely delayed. Then he'll gently, but firmly, encourage you to fill up his kibble and generally seize the day. He's a patient, chilled, tuned-in little guy.

We can't believe this beautiful boy hasn't found a forever home yet. He's the perfect mix of everything you would want in a feline household manager!

For more information or to arrange to meet BADGER please complete our adoption application form https://forms.gle/5XnJs2fZ4ewUHiFE7. All the information you need is in the form and we will call you to discuss further once we have all your details 😊.

Meet CALLIE 🐱

We can't believe this gorgeous tortoiseshell girl hasn't found her forever home yet, but we know it's out there. Callie is a hoot. She is entertaining, affectionate, involved, very smart and somewhat co-dependent, so definitely needs a home where she has company during the day.

She is super high energy and playful and loves a game of hide and pounce — so pay attention when you walk around corners! She loves playing with humans and her dangly toy. She quickly becomes the household's timekeeper and will let you know when it's meal times and time for bed. She's a chatty girl when she needs to let you know something.

Callie loves attention and human contact, but is very egalitarian and will share her love between all the humans — no favourites here! She'll wait until you are settled on the couch or bed, and then will perch herself on top of you, ideally under a cosy blanket.

She's not that excited about exploring the world. If she can look out a window or lie in the sun, she's happy. She's more interested in seeing what is in your shopping bag or on your plate.

If this sounds like your forever cat, come meet her and get to know her more.

Thank you from Toby! 🐯

Thank you to everyone who contributed to Toby's patella luxation surgery. We are blown away by your kindness and have been able to raise what we needed.

Thank you again Vetscape Animal Hospital and Dr Frans van Heerden for the surgery and care.

Toby is recovering well. His stitches are out, which means his cone can come off! And his little tabby tiger stripes are growing back on his hind legs. He is still on cage rest with no jumping allowed — just over 3 weeks to go until he can run free and jump to his heart's content.

Quick update on SUNNY 🌻

Her sterilisation went well on Friday. We are cautiously hopeful we have improved her leaking and recurring UTIs, but we do need to give it a bit of time and have everything confirmed when we have her stitches out in 2 weeks. It's a complicated case, so it's hard to give clear-cut answers at this point.

Meanwhile, Sunny is eating, drinking, and resting up, very glad to be home after her adventure.

We'll keep you posted with any news!
