Cyclists were mugged near kleinplass dam by 4 men at knifepoint. Their dog ran away - husky called Sky, wearing a pink harness. If anyone sees Sky, please call 0832632475

Dear clients

If anybody can't get in to the practice to update your pets' rabies vaccines ,we will gladly come to you and not charge for a house visit.

Please ,if you cannot afford the rabies vaccines and your pets are due ,please chat to us.

At some stage ,the State Vet may set up free vacc clinics ,but not as yet.

Please let's get all our pets up to date on the rabies vaccines.

Rabies is an absolutely awful disease and there is NO treatment once the symptoms manifest.

Rabies is caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. Once rabies symptoms have started, there is no cure.

Rabies can present as a sudden change in behaviour. A wild animal can become tame, and a previously placid animal can become wildly aggressive. Some can also present as feverish, sick, lethargic, and very subdued. They can walk in circles and appear confused and drunk. There can be a lot of salivation / drooling, and some animals will refuse to drink or even seem afraid of water. Affected animals may appear to be choking.

Rabies can be spread through saliva, bites, or scratches from a rabid animal. The incubation period can vary from 2 weeks to 6 months.

In South Africa, rabies is most commonly spread by infected dogs, but cats, mongoose, foxes and jackals are known to carry rabies. It is NOT clear which other animals or rodents may carry or spread rabies.

Prevention by vaccination is extremely effective.
All dogs and cats should be vaccinated from 3 months of age. A second vaccination is given within a year. Thereafter, it is recommended to give annual rabies booster vaccinations in all rabies areas.

At present, we are not sure how the dog in Capri contracted rabies. For now, it would be advisable to

1) Boost your pets' rabies vaccination, if due. Check with your vet if you are not sure. If you are unable to afford this, please go to Tears or SPCA.

2) Keep your pets away from all wild animals, or even indoors if necessary

3) Keep your pets away from dogs/cats that are not known to be vaccinated

4) Keep your pets away from aggressive animals and especially from wild animals that are behaving strangely

5) If your pet does get bitten ,check on the rabies vaccine status of the biter and see your vet as soon as possible

6) Wash any animal bite wounds very well with lots of water and soap.

We will keep you updated. At this stage, we only have a single positive rabies case in a dog from Capri.

Dear Noordhoekers

We have a confirmed Rabies case in a dog in our area. The dog has been euthanazed and a diagnosis of Rabies has been confirmed by the State Vet.

We were asked not to forward this information just yet ,while the State Vet visits the area and decides on the best plan of action. However , I am told that another local community Facebook group has already reported this , so I am posting now to try to make things clear .

We only received confirmation of the diagnosis this afternoon.The State Vet is busy assessing the whole situation and deciding whether to set up emergency vaccine clinics etc.We will keep you informed as soon as we know what measures are being taken.

In the meantime ,please try not to panic.This may be an isolated case. If your pets' rabies vaccinations are up to date ,your pets should not be able to contract rabies. If not ,please get do get the Rabies vaccinations up to date as soon as possible.

In the meantime , if you do encounter an unusually vicious animal ,please do not approach it and please report it and get help if necessary.

Rabies is a very scary disease and this is the first known case in our area ,but I assure you that the situation is being dealt with expertly and urgently.

Dear Clients

Sadly it is time for our ( very overdue) annual price increases. Unfortunately the cost of materials , lab fees etc just keep climbing ,and we need to keep up with these rising expenses.

Owning a pet and providing good care , can be really expensive .MEDICAL INSURANCE for your pets is not cheap either , but we do urge you to consider this .

In the meantime ,all of us at Noordhoek Vet are committed to the best care for your animals.
