We listed the top 6 plants that can be toxic OR cause severe tummy upset. Regarding holiday cacti: "According to the ASPCA, Christmas cacti are non-toxic to cats in small quantities. However, if a cat eats a large amount of the plant, it can cause digestive issues"

These are the top 6 Christmas plants to keep your cats safely away from.
We are often asked about pine needles. They could cause stomach upset but the main reason they are on the list is for their possibility of puncturing soft tissues and/or organs.

Meet Hugo, one of our very special patients here at Noordhoek Vet.
He is a 2year old Frenchie and his owners brought him in because he was having trouble breathing as well as really bad snoring.
The below pictures are a “Before” and “after” he underwent surgery.
His owners, as well as all of us here at Noordhoek Vet are ecstatic with the outcome. Hugo’s parents are finally able to get a peaceful nights sleep.

Most importantly however is that Hugo’s quality of life, from a medical standpoint has vastly improved since the surgery. He is a lot more comfortable and can finally breathe in the fresh air and smell the daisies.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway
Syndrome (BOAS)

Dog breeds affected by this syndrome:
• English bulldog
• French bulldog
• Pug
• Pekingese
• Boston Terrier

How will I know that my dog is affected by this syndrome:
• Very noisy breathing
• Struggling to breathe
• Gagging/retching
• Snoring
• Coughing

Surgical intervention:
• Shortening of elongated soft palate which is too long and protrudes into the airway and interferes with normal airflow to the lungs
• Opening of everted laryngeal saccules which obstructs the tracheal opening
• Stenotic nares opened up as it collapses inward during inhalation making breathing through nose difficult

SNAKE SEASON / ANTIVENOM

Dear Clients

Please be extra vigilant for snakes this summer. Already there have been a LOT of snakes about - puffadders , cobras, boomslang.

We do have ANTIVENOM in stock at Noordhoek Vet Clinic ,but this is still in short supply and may run out .

So just be extra watchful when out walking your dogs ,especially on the mountain.
