We want to say that we thank you for your support and feedback on our projects and goals. We also understand people's strong reactions towards the amount of animals people own and their lack of proper care. It is extremely frustrating for us to be in and around this day in and day out. It is not an easy thing to do.
The reality is that the bylaws state that animals are not sentient beings but are seen as property. Meaning that we may not take or confiscate animals as we would like, there is a lot of red tape involved if owners refuse to surrender their animals. In extreme cases we do rely on SPCA and animal welfare to step in. Even then warnings get issued first.
We are sitting with a huge problem with pitbulls in the townships that are causing havoc, fighting with other dogs and impregnating unspayed females. Even though there is a "law" that animals have to be sterilised the reality is that it is not enforced. There are just enough law enforcement officers that have time or even care to address the issues.
That means our hands are truly tied.
The only thing we can do is assist the dogs by helping them to be sterilised and medicated etc.
In a perfect world there would be no animals in the impoverished areas. People are often venting to us and on our social media posts to just "take them all away". If we could we would, but then also where would they go? Shelters are full.
Many years ago people wanted to fund us to rather put animals to sleep that are not wanted or are neglected instead of sterilising. It makes sense to a point, but then again who will hold every dog that could have a 2nd chance while they die? Homes are full. The amount of people adopting have drastically lowered in recent years especially as it is very hard to find pet friendly accommodation. We do, though, hold every single animal in our arms that have to be out to sleep due to illness or injury. They are never alone and the last words they ever hear is "you are loved".
A lot of the people do not get serviced by the municipality. Mostly because they live in informal shacks. Their rubbish is not removed. Their yards get very filthy. When we want to try and assist these people to clean up we also get criticised. While we agree that these people should be doing their own cleaning, it is the dogs that live in these homes that are at risk of disease and infection. So while we clean we also educate the importance of cleanliness.
We do a "job" everyday that breaks our spirits. It sometimes feels like a never ending pit, but we live by: "rescuing one animal might not change the world, but for that one animal the world is changed forever"
We completely understand that every person has their own opinions and feelings. Not everyone wants to support every aspect of animal rescue, so we ask that you please donate today to one of our needs below and state your REF as exactly what you would like us to do with it.
* There are quite a few dogs, males and females, that live in one street of Chris Nissen Park that have to be sterilised. At the moment there is one very specific dog on heat that is being r*ped by all the dogs in the area. She and her many suitors need to be sterilised. You can get your Tax receipt and an appreciation certificate with the face of your dog on.
* Dog food donations: https://www.montegopower.store/product-page/pets-empowerment-in-townships
* Our vehicle does not have long left to "live" and without it we just cannot do anything. In 2009 Protea Hotels very kindly sponsored us a vehicle but the years have taken its toll and it is not able to do the distances and amount of work that is required.
We also do massive sterilisation campaigns every month where 50 - 100 animals need to be transported to and from their homes to the venues of the vets. If you or your company could help us with a new (second hand) vehicle you could do all the branding. If you can help us fix the one we currently have or even just a part of the cost, we would also put your branding on it. First prize is 2 vehicles in working order, but even one we must have.
