Today is both a sad and a happy day.
Yesterday we officially handed over the keys to our shop to the new owners.
We are sad to see our baby, Pet Food and Co, go... But we are happy to leave it in the very capable hands of the people of About Cats & Dogs - people we know care about your four-footed-friend as much as we do!
And we are pleased to say that Megan and Mickey will be staying on, so while the exterior of the shop may change, the heart and sole will stay the same.
Thank you so much for your support over the last 2.5 years.

Last (but most definitely not least) on our list of Unsung Heroes: Dermavet.
This is an antiseptic wound healing cream which increases the speed of wound healing. It also has antifungal, cooling, pain-killing, wound contraction and haemostatic (decreases bleeding) properties.

We are coming to the end of our range of Unsung Heroes. Number 7 is Diomec Plus.
Diomec Plus is a paste used to treat acute and chronic diarrhoea in dogs and cats. It contains Diosmectite, a natural clay, which binds the stool to normalise the consistency and helps heal the intestinal lining by forming a protective lining in the gut. Prebiotics help normalise the balance of good and bad bacteria, while the dextrose and electrolytes replace what has been lost. A lot of people are collecting their furr kids from the kennels and catteries today after having enjoyed a school holiday or weekend away.
Kennels, especially for dogs, could be a a source of worm infestations. Other dogs who used the kennels facility may not have an up to date deworming history. Also remember dewormers kill the adult worms, other larval stages need to mature before being killed by a dewormer. It is advisable to therefore deworm your pet on the collection day from a kennel and then repeat the dewormer in two weeks time, thereafter every 3 to 6 months depending on your pets habit. Hookworm is a predominant worm type, and with a short life cycle can reproduce quickly. We suggest using a dewormer which is effective against Hookworm, namely Triworm.

Owners naturally want to do everything in their power to help their pets live long, happy, and healthy lives. Where an animal might have been euthanized in the past, pet insurance can help to cover costs so that an animal can get the best possible treatment and live a long and happy life.

The fifth reason why pets are living longer is better housing. More pets, as part of the family, are nowadays raised indoors which reduces medical issues. Those that are housed outside often also have better kennels/bedding.

Reason nr 4 why pets live longer: Veterinary care
Good veterinary care is an essential factor in optimizing the chances of pets living long lives. Veterinary science and animal medication has improved in heaps and bounds the last few decades. More animals are vaccinated (prevent spreading of deadly diseases) and spayed or neutered at a young age (prevent mammary tumours, uterine infections and prostatic diseases). Chronic conditions like diabetes, heart failure and arthritis are diagnosed earlier and treated more successfully. Preventative health recommendations like tick/flea/worm treatment also help a lot against communicable disease.

Reason nr 3 why pets are living longer: Dental Hygiene
Regular brushing can increase your dog’s lifespan by preventing plaque, gingivitis and bacterial infections. Good quality toothbrushes and pet toothpaste are freely available. Dental treats also help clean the teeth without the hassle. When you take your pet to your vet for his annual health check and vaccinations, your vet will also examine his teeth and gums and advice you if a dental scale and polish is indicated.

An active lifestyle is the key to better health, both for you and your pet. Since pets are now considered part of the family, they are also more likely to go on hikes and vacations with their owners. Daily walks, jogs or trips to the dog park also reduce stress, boost energy levels and help your dog maintain a healthy weight. Providing interactive toys, scratch post and playing games with your cat can also benefit him.

Why pets are living longer!
Studies have shown that both dogs and cats are living longer than ever before. A dog’s life expectancy has doubled in the past 4 decades and housecats now live twice as long as their feral counterparts. Over the next few days, we will look at the reasons for this.
Reason nr 1: Diet
Just like humans, your pet’s diet has a significant impact on his longevity. There have been tremendous advances in the quality of commercial pet food over the last few decades. Diets are tailor made for different life stages, activity levels and even medical conditions and breeds. There has also been in increase in people opting for raw diets and, if done correctly, it can also help our pets live long and happy lives.

Grooming.
Regular bathing and brushing can help get rid of loose hair, seeds, pollen and dust that cause skin irritation. Grooming is also a great time to check for fleas, ticks, lumps and bumps or sore spots, and get them treated early. Your pet’s nails will require trimming every now and then, even if you walk your dog on concrete or your cat scratches their post a lot.

Next up on Dr Rouxlene's list of Preventative Health Care Guidelines: Sterilization of both males and females.
Benefits include prevention of serious infections & cancers of the reproductive organs (e.g. mammary and uterine infections and cancers in females and prostate and testicular cancers in males). Of course one of the biggest advantages is the prevention of unwanted litters. Sterilizing or neutering your pet at a young age may also control some of the hormonal urges that lead to undesirable behaviors (e.g. marking, hu***ng, and aggression).
