Goodbye to the Jo'burg birds. The Cape Town babies went to their new homes yesterday. So sweet...

29/10/2015

Loved their 1st day out on the patio.
These babies are all getting a healthy appetite to eat by themselves. Have them on fruit and veg as well as the Animalzone pellets and cereal. Food is fun!

25/10/2015

Nearly ready for new homes! The little ones are weaning well.
Funny story - I was cleaning their cage earlier. I had babies on my back and climbing on the cage. When done, I did the headcount - 3 - where is number 4? I looked round and there was Emma, my german shepherd, walking off with a baby perched on her back. So sweet...

Yesterday was wing and nail clip day with Dylan the Glencairn "bird" vet. He just clips the flight feathers leaving 2 long ones to break a fall when need be. They then glide to the ground as opposed to crash!
Its the 1st time I've had birds nails clipped. Decided to do it as they were very sharp. When they got home, they were slipping off the perches - so I've put thinner sticks in and apparently this sorts itself in a day or 2.
They're now enjoying some papino in their breakfast bowls.

21/10/2015

Early morning swim for the team!

15/10/2015

Learning to play! This is a very lively bunch. Started the weaning - the elder 2 are taking to it quicker than the youngsters - but every day we move forward.
At night I still let them sleep in their nest - daytime in the cage. The last pic is of big sister Isis (3yrs) visiting. She loves little babies!

13/10/2015

The eldest - so graceful. And trying to explore and climb. Steven - your little one (on own and on left in 2nd pic).

11/10/2015

Just starting to nibble some food. I still need to feed them as they slowly shift to eat on their own.
I have one little guy still available for a new home - if anyone is looking. Email me on [email protected].

Whose in charge here!

07/10/2015

Latest pics. They are all so lovely to interact with.

02/10/2015

Very chatty bunch in their make-shift nest.
Need to start introducing them to the outside world soon.

01/10/2015

Lots of love here...

29/09/2015

Baby selfie...
So cutable.

26/09/2015

And the little one's - becoming beautiful so quickly

26/09/2015

How beautiful is Sky looking. She's learnt to fly now as her wings have grown.

23/09/2015

Cute and cuddly...

20/09/2015

Look carefully for the little blue bum feathers that are coming out.
Also look at how the head feathers are taking form...

17/09/2015

As these little ones grow I am able to see more clearly the boys from the girls. I'm pretty sure its 3 girls and 1 boy (the 2nd born).
They have such fun. After food, we dance and squeak. Then we lie down like 4 little pancakes and sleep...
Notice the yellow coming on the wings.

14/09/2015

After dinner dance party...
as they mimic feeding each other. Much joy and happiness.

13/09/2015

The cutest, quietest most peaceful little bunch. Wow what a privilege. I have now taken these 4 little treasures to hand-raise. Mom and Dad have done the most sterling job to 21 - 27 days. I now take over to ensure they are tame.
Trusting...

Welcome Spring! She is here, she is alive !!
And inside the box are 4 beautiful little little baby parrots. Between 1 and 2 weeks old. Mom and Dad are very busy.

17/08/2015

I was just up in the Kruger and was blessed with these brown headed parrots living in the tree next to my tent.

What's more on day 2, 3 baby parrots fledged from the nest and were playing and foraging in the trees around my tent.

These 3 little guys were never quiet, calling for food and each other just as they do on my dining room table when I hand rear their Meyers cousins. It was so amazing to experience nature so wonderfully in action and realise how it plays out in my own life.

Look how camouflaged they are..

And the view from my tent of the Sabi River

And a giant eagle owl

Now isn't this a handsome guy - Sergeant Pepper - named after his favourite food the red pepper.

Anyway, the reason for the post - Mom meyers has laid 4 eggs and has disappeared into her box to sit on them. Will see her again towards the end of August when the eggs hatch.

A little video for my friend Ros from the birds, wishing you all the wellness

A mongoose making my garden home - all good, but stressing the parrots a bit. I've suggested he go, let's see. Luckily the aviaries are double wired.

When a new animal appears in my life I always research the symbolism:
• The animal totem for mongoose is said to have the magical attributes: defence, protection, and destroying evil. One chant is: Mongoose-power, come to our Defense. Destroy all ill intent. Corner, cage, with righteous rage, All those who threaten, harm or kill. Imprison, bind, those of dark mind, Beneath the mongoose-power and will...

All 2014 babies doing exceptionally well...
Prof swimming with his family on his hand crafted wooden lilo over Christmas.
Jules's amazing climbing rope from her cage so she can enjoy the patio with her family.
I know that Connor has free range of his apartment and has made the old school wooden clothes horse his own.
Lastly, little Crispy, the aviary bred bird has her own massive aviary space now. I'm trying to introduce Isis - but Isis is quite a madam. Let's see how we go.

Chicken Bone Yoga:
Every now and again I give my parrots a well cleaned off chicken bone (leg, thigh or bigger wing bone). They dive in - love it - and break open the ends of the bone and devour the marrow.
Have a look at a finished off bone here...

Christmas and animals...
Little Dizzy the grey masked lovebird has a lyphoma (fat lump) on her abdomen, which is stopping eggs forming and a bit uncomfortable. So no more nest - but still lots of LOVE from hubby Arthur (turquoise guy).

Joyi (the green quaker) was put out with her new hubby Grassroot into a small aviary. She is laying soft eggs again. So I've put that to a stop. No offspring here. She had a prolapse a few years back that the vet put back with an earbud! The soft eggs are from less light in the cages so not enough Vit D to release the calcium.

Emma the German Shepherd had a bull terrier hanging from her neck for some time on Friday. Luckily very thick skinned (and lovable) so no major bite - just superficial skin reaction being treated.

And my buddy Sparky (black lab) discovered the tourist resort behind the Fishhoek beach dunes and forgot his family on the beach. I did find him some time later though.

So I opened up to what I could learn from all of this - I found an even deeper level of Love, sharing and acceptance. Not to mention Trust that all is perfect including myself.

25/12/2014

Talking Christmas, Squeaky (Sky) got a tent put in her cage. Wow, she went straight in and started sqeaking sounds of much happiness, with the odd 'hello' and 'goodbye' thrown in.
She even slept in it from the 1st night.
So sweet!

01/12/2014

I'm off on a Botanical Art Retreat for the week to REVIVE my painting skills. This was the 1st bird I painted some years back...

29/11/2014

Hasn't Crispy turned into the most beautiful little princess. Fully fledged and eating by herself. I say 'her' as she appears so feminine - I will still get this officially checked.

13/11/2014

Jules is the little female of the hand-raised babies that all recently went to new homes. Jules went to John in George. The pictures speak the story - look how these two are bonding... Such companions.
And so enjoying the shower!!

10/11/2014

Who can spot the parrot (Isis) amongst the trail running socks?
She loves playing on the clothes drying rack...

05/11/2014

Charli's hatchday - 1 year ago. That goes for his 2 brothers and sister too - Pippin in Sedgefield and Jody and Jake on Ocean View. So special.

29/10/2014

This precious little one is so beautiful. I'm sure its a girl, but will have the bird officially sexed when it reaches 12 weeks. I'm saying its a girl because the beak is narrower, head less flat than a male and the coloration on the chest is smooth not ribbed like a male.
'She' took her first swim today in the drinking bowl. Although is still being fed by Mom and Dad.
