WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY

Today we celebrate all pet heroes who donated blood. Did you know your pet can become a hero when donating blood as they can help us in saving the lives of sick and injured pets?

Dog blood donors need to be:
🐶 1-6 years of age.
🐶 Be of a healthy weight for the breed.
🐶 Be more than 25kg.
🐶 Be healthy.
🐶 Have up-to-date vaccinations, deworming and tick & flea treatments.
🐶 Have a calm temperament.
🐶Not be on chronic medication.
🐶Not had any previous blood transfusions.

Cat blood donors need to be:
🐱 1-8 years of age.
🐱 FIV and FeLV negative
🐱 Must not be suffering from any chronic condition
🐱 Minimum 4kg weight, but not overweight
🐱 Calm temperament

CHECK YOUR ENGINE, ESPECIALLY IN THE COOL WINTER MONTHS

During the winter months, cats will try to find a spot where they might be able to keep warm, and often the perfect place is in your car’s engine or on top of your car’s wheels. This can be extremely dangerous for your cat if you, unaware of the cat, drive off, completely unaware of the 'stowaway'.

Rabies is a disease preventable by vaccination. Please make sure your pets have been fully vaccinated against rabies. Puppies and kittens are vaccinated twice in their first year of life, starting at 12 weeks of age, a booster may be given at a year of age, and thereafter every three years. Please make an appointment with your nearest vet to have vaccinations updated if required.

Don’t approach stray or animals on the street, especially if showing signs of strange behaviour, salivation, paralysis or aggression. Rather report these to your local state vet. Our aim is to inform you and not to alarm you. Rabies is not common in the Western Cape and the chance of you encountering a rabid animal is very low. However, it is wise to be informed and vigilant.
