Fun Fact! Did you know some waterbirds build floating nests?

This clever nest, spotted at Intaka Island, belongs to a coot or moorhen. These birds carefully weave reeds and plant material to create a safe, floating home. The surrounding water acts as a natural moat, helping protect their eggs and chicks from predators. Nature is truly amazing!

Wetlands do more than just look beautiful – they purify our water, protect us from floods, store carbon, and provide a home for wildlife.

Every year on 2 February, World Wetlands Day reminds us why these ecosystems are vital. This year’s theme, “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” highlights how wetlands are essential for our health, climate, and the well-being of future generations.

But wetlands protection isn’t just for one day – it’s about ensuring clean water, fresh air, and a thriving planet for generations to come.

Intaka Island is a perfect example of how wetlands sustain both nature and people. Want to learn more?

Throwback Thursday!

Here’s a look at the transformation of Intaka Island’s Eco-Centre – from its early beginnings to the fully functional and sustainable space it is today! Swipe to see how far it’s come.

When Century City’s development began in 1996, much of the area was covered in invasive alien vegetation and degraded wetlands. However, after careful planning, Intaka Island was created as a multi-purpose nature reserve, blending conservation with property development. The Eco-Centre, completed in 2010, now serves as a hub for education and environmental sustainability, hosting everything from school groups to corporate events.

Do you remember the early days of the Eco-Centre? Share your thoughts or memories with us in the comments!

Fun Fact! 🌳

Have you ever noticed the sweet, wine-like scent of the sycamore fig tree at Intaka Island? The wild figs release a fermented aroma that attracts birds and wasps. Birds feast on the seeds inside, while wasps lay their eggs in the fruit, turning the flowers into seeds. It's a fascinating example of nature’s delicate web of life, where each species plays a crucial role in the cycle of growth and renewal. 🦜🐝🍇

Come see this incredible process unfold on your next visit!
