Ensure that your pet is microchipped & your details are registered with the microchip company. If your pet wears a collar, it will be a good idea to invest in an ID Tag with your details on it.

What should you do if your pet goes missing during Christmas or New Year?
- Contact local your vets in the area
- Look at your nearest SPCA
- Print posters and distribute them
- Make a public post on every social media page
- Ask around in your neighborhood

This is quite a commonly known danger, but also a very common gift. It will cause liver damage. Be sure that if you have any wrapped up under the tree or elsewhere that it is kept out of reach of the four-legged family members.

โ€ข Decorations
Bauble and tinsel can cause a stomach blockage if swallowed. Try to hang your decorations higher up on your tree to prevent your pets from pulling them down.

โ€ข Fairy Lights
These can be very tempting for your pets to play with. Keep any cables out of your pets' reach and remember to switch them off when they are not in use.

โ€ข Cake
Be careful of any foods that may contain raisins, alcohol or other ingredients that are toxic to pets.

โ€ข Leftovers
Although Christmas lunches might seem mouth-watering to your pets, human foods are fattening and potentially harmful. Instead of feeding from your plate, ensure you have some safe and appropriate treats, so they don't feel left out.

โ€ข Toys and presents
Christmas presents lying under the tree can be very tempting, especially if the gift is edible! Some gifts may contain toys that can be chewed up and if swallowed, can cause a stomach blockage. Some toys or gadgets may contain batteries. If chewed or swallowed, they can cause an obstruction or chemical burns. Itโ€™s best to keep all wrapped gifts out of your pet's reach.

โ€ข Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and affected dogs need to be treated by a veterinarian immediately!
โ€ข Watch for signs of dehydration. Dogs can't sweat. They cool off by panting, so an overheated dog will drool excessively and will breathe faster than normal. They will become more lethargic, their eyes will be bloodshot, and gums may appear a little pale. If you lift the skin, it will take longer than usual for the skin to fall back into place.
โ€ข Dogs with flatter faces (brachycephalic breeds), such as bulldogs and pugs, are at a greater risk as their breathing is more restricted than dogs with longer faces.
โ€ข Placing several water bowls around their living area would be ideal to encourage adequate water intake.
โ€ข Make sure to spray the paws and stomach, not just the top of the dog, when cooling your dog with water. A wet towel is better on the bottom of your dog than when laid on the top of its coat. Do not place a wet towel over the dog, as it may start to trap heat (like a blanket).
โ€ข Ensure adequate airflow over your pet, such as a fan, to help with evaporative cooling.
โ€ข Exercise your dog early in the morning or late at night (no walks on scorching days, letโ€™s protect those paw pads).
โ€ข Never leave your dog in a parked car, not even for 5 minutes.
โ€ข Use hot weather as an excuse to swim more often (supervised swims).
โ€ข A kiddie pool for the furry kids is also a great option; one they can access easily.
โ€ข Make frozen treats for your fur kids (using pet friendly ingredients of course).
