Hope & Light ECD was invited for a free visit to Monkey Town this past Friday.

The weather was not great, but they still made their way to us for a fun and educational visit with our beautiful animals.

Slowly but surely our animals will start to make their way to their new homes, but in the mean time they are enjoying the tiny visitors that are so excited to see them again.

We thank you for your visit ❤️

Thank you for visiting our animals and spending the day with us!!

❤️❤️❤️

Today is a cold, windy and gloomy day so the next creche visit is only scheduled for next week.

We will be spending today ensuring all our animals are nice and warm with full bellies.

The chimps will be getting some yummy soup in addition to their normal feeds, and heaters for the smaller species will start to warm up their enclosures.

Winter is on our doorstep!

Stay safe everyone 🙏

Today was a very special outing to Monkey Town by Emily’s Play-school from Sir Lowry’s Pass.

We have noticed that our animals are truly missing their daily visitors and therefore invited 3 x crèches from Sir Lowry’s Pass to visit them over 3 days.

We are grateful for your visit ❤️❤️❤️

We hope the little ones will remember their visit for a very long time!!

Our animals were delighted to see them!!

We are closed to the general public and our animals will all be leaving for their new homes very soon. They are all going to nature conservation approved facilities that have been vetted by the owners.

#2024

23/04/2024

We are aware of a monkey running around in Gordon’s Bay.

It is not one of ours.

It is a vervet monkey and they live wild in our area. It should actually just be left alone.

Monkey Town does not have vervet monkeys on our premises.

17/04/2024

Electricity back on!

We are happy happy 😀

17/04/2024

Monkey Town still does not have electricity on site. No working phones also 😤

16/04/2024

Just to inform everyone - still no electricity or phones.

We are sort of gatvol now 😫

15/04/2024

When it rains, it pours 🥲🥲🥲

The new developers next to and behind Monkey Town cut our electrical cables with their digger loader this morning.

So now we wait on Eskom again.

Please note: No electricity on site, our phones don’t work without electricity.

14/04/2024

Do you want to laugh/cry with us?

Yesterday Eskom put off our electricity without prior notice from 11h00-19h00.

Guess what? They just did it again 😢😢😢

We suppose they are working on fixing lines in the area and they have to put off the entire main line.

So…no electricity at Monkey Town. No working phones when we don’t have electricity.

BUT: we are open 8-5!

The public tour of the primate centre is at 12h00 and includes 2 x feeding times of the monkeys and apes.

Stop by!

We are not going to let a lack of electricity get us down….the animals are just as beautiful with, or without, electricity ❤️

10/04/2024

Our electricity is back on!!!

We are grateful for everyone that shared our plight, supported us…we are sure you are cheering with us now!!

We are beyond happy!!!

10/04/2024

ASKING FOR HELP:

Not even sure if this is a plausible idea, but if there is anyone who has a contact at Eskom - can you please put the word out there that we have been without electricity for 4 days already. Going for 5 tomorrow :-( Eskom has not even been around from what we can gather to assess our situation. Every time our area is left without electricity after a storm we are last in the line to be fixed. Very upsetting to say the least.

10/04/2024

Day 4 has arrived.

We are still without electricity, which means our borehole does not work. Yeah for Jojo tanks❤️
Our phone lines obviously still don’t work.

A small glimmer of hope…we heard a little birdie say that Eskom will come out to assess the situation in our area today. When they will fix the issue is a completely different story.

We can only be hopeful!!

Latest update from Eskom regarding our area 😩

09/04/2024

Update:

Monkey Town is still without electricity. We are at day 3 now.

Situation remains the same: no electricity, no phones, no water, no internet.

It’s a mess 🥲

We are dealing with the physical aftermath of the storm now.

We are repairing damaged enclosures, repairing the electrical fence wiring that was damaged all over the premises, chain sawing multiple trees that fell, dealing with insurance claims for flood damage and structural damages etc.

Currently there is no news from Eskom as to when they will attend to our issue.

Thanks for all the messages of support we have been receiving 🥰❤️🥰

Hallo public!

Monkey Town is still without electricity, as is most of the Helderberg.

We have very intermittent internet, it’s off more than its on.

So if we do not respond to your email, there is a reason. So sorry about all of this.

Phones are still off.

This is a nightmare for not only us, but the entire Helderberg.

Please keep us all in your thoughts 🙏

07/04/2024

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC:

This storm has knocked out all our electricity since last night.

Our phones do not work without electricity.

The reptile garden on site will be closed today.

Our park looks like a hurricane came through here!!

So if you visit us today, it is going to be rough out there.

Please stay safe everyone ❤️

MEDIA STATEMENT 27/3/2024

Dear friends,

It is with great pain and sorrow that we have had to take the decision to permanently close Monkey Town Primate Centre to visitors from the morning of Monday 29 April 2024 after 23 years+ of business in Somerset West, Cape Town.

The use of the word sorrow depicts how difficult we view the current situation and the impact to people, jobs and the future of everyone young and old.

Due to developments in our direct vicinity over the past few years and much more to come very soon, this incredibly hard decision had to be made.

When Monkey Town opened its doors in the year 2000 we were in a rural part of Somerset West and surrounded by nature and a quiet environment, which was great for our animals. This has changed dramatically as the years have gone by and the ever increasing noise pollution has become problematic for our animals.

Arrangements have been made at Nature Conservation approved facilities for the animals seeking new homes, as Monkey Town does not have the finances to rebuild a new facility in a different location.

We would like to thank the public for their kindness and support over the past 23 years and wish you all the best for the future.

We would appreciate it if the public can respect our privacy during this extremely difficult period.

Please keep an eye on our page as we will be running a closing down special for everyone to visit our animals for the last time. We will appreciate everyone’s support during the last few weeks that we are open to the public.

From the Owner and Managers of Monkey Town Primate Centre
