Scammers use phishing SMS"es to gain card details, then send an "OTP" to the victim. Victim thinks they're approving payment for postage or something trivial - in fact the scammer is using the OTP to authenticate adding the credit card to their own smartwatch.
They can then trot around town running up purchases by tapping the watch with no need for further OTP's.
Typically they start with low values to test the cards limit and then increase progressively.
A scam where fraudsters trick people into linking a smartwatch to their bank cards by following the link on an SMS is on the rise in South Africa.
