Paws4life went to visit the staff, nurses and doctors at Panorama Medi-clinic for their wellness day. Cooper and Baloo were giving out hugs and showing the staff how deep pressure therapy is done. Mental health is overlooked in so many medical personnel and it’s great to see that panorama medi-clinic is making an effort to put a smile back on their faces.

All dogs show dedication, compassion, loyalty and unconditional love to their owners but service dogs take it a step further they help owners with daily tasks, alert them if a seizure or attack is imminent and get help when needed. Please help us to spread a little bit of awareness about why these dogs can change a life. 🇿🇦 🇿🇦

What is a service dog and why are they so important?
A service dog is a dog who is trained and specialised to perform certain tasks for their human. These dogs are trained to their owner’s specific needs.

What is Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT) and why is it so important for all service dogs to learn.
Believe me, it is a concept you never knew you needed, until you have experienced what it is and how it helps you.
When feeling anxious, our bodies move into the sympathetic nervous system because we need to survive, DPT helps our bodies move back into the parasympathetic nervous system. DPT helps our bodies to produce “feel-good” neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. Kids on the autism spectrum also benefits from DPT, it helps them to balance their proprioceptive sense. For people who struggle with anxiety it gives a sense of calmness. While for all people it gives us a sense of companionship and not being alone.
When a service dog is applying DPT, an individual would use all their senses and it is important for us to encourage that person to focus on the dog. Smell the dog, feel and touch the hair of the dog, focus on that sense is it long hair, coarse hair, seeing and hearing the breathing of the dog, focus on the calm and steadiness of the breathing.
As we grow and learn with our dogs, we all would subconsciously pick a favourite spot, for some it might be the ears while others might like the muzzle, before we ask our dogs to apply deep pressure focus on these areas, focus on your touch, stroking movements and start to calm your breathing, breathing exercises while focusing on these areas are very important and can help to relieve anxiety.
Your service dog is a very important part of you, please always remember your dog is an extension of you and not just a dog.

Look at that focus. Khaya enjoyed herself so much yesterday, it is amazing to see how she tries to figure out, what she is supposed to do. It’s important to train a dog in a way that they can problem solve, when they are stuck in a situation they need to think how they can get the reward.
