Did you know that Whale Songs Travel for Miles – Humpback whales are famous for their haunting songs, which can travel up to 3,000 km (1,864 miles) underwater!

💙 Let’s raise awareness. Let’s protect their home. Let’s make waves for change.

🌊 World Whale Day – Know the Giants of the Ocean 🐋

Whales are more than just ocean giants—they are ecosystem engineers and play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy planet. Here’s why they deserve our attention and protection:

🔹 The Largest Animal on Earth – The blue whale can grow up to 30 meters (98 feet) long and weigh 200 tons—that’s heavier than a Boeing 737!

🔹 The Deep Divers – S***m whales can dive over 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) deep and hold their breath for 90 minutes while hunting squid.

🔹 Natural Carbon Warriors – Whales absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide during their lifetime, helping fight climate change. When they pass away, their bodies sink to the ocean floor, storing carbon for centuries.

🔹 Whale Songs Travel for Miles – Humpback whales are famous for their haunting songs, which can travel up to 3,000 km (1,864 miles) underwater!

🔹 They Keep the Ocean Healthy – Whale p**p (yes, really!) fertilizes the ocean, boosting plankton growth, which helps produce 50% of the Earth’s oxygen.

🐋 Whales need our protection. Pollution, climate change, and human interference threaten their existence. This , let’s commit to safeguarding these incredible creatures.

💙 Protect our oceans. Protect our whales. The planet depends on it.

You’ve likely seen the White-breasted Cormorant (Phalacrocorax lucidus) perched on rocky outcrops or gliding just above the waves. This sleek black seabird is one of the ocean’s most efficient fishers and a true icon of South Africa’s coastline.

🔹 Masters of the Dive – These birds can dive up to 25 meters underwater, using their webbed feet to chase fish with incredible speed.

🔹 No Waterproof Feathers? No Problem! – Unlike other water birds, their feathers aren’t fully waterproof, which helps them sink faster while hunting. After a dive, they perch with wings wide open to dry off in the sun.

🔹 Sharp Vision, Sharper Reflexes – Cormorants have exceptional underwater eyesight, allowing them to strike with pinpoint accuracy when catching their next meal.

🔹 Nature’s Balancer – By keeping fish populations in check, these birds play a vital role in maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems.

Spotted a Cormorant lately? Drop a pic in the comments and show some love for these fearless feathered divers! 💙🐦

🌊 The Mighty Periwinkle – Small but Tough! 🐚

Ever spotted those tiny, spiraled shells clinging to rocks along the shore? That’s the Periwinkle, a tough little mollusk built to survive the wildest tides! 🌊💪

These resilient creatures lock themselves onto rocks when the tide goes out, trapping moisture inside their shell to avoid drying out. But when the water returns, they spring back to life, grazing on algae and playing a crucial role in keeping the rocky shore ecosystem balanced. 🌿

Fun fact: Some periwinkles can close their shell with a trapdoor-like lid (called an operculum) to stay safe from predators and harsh conditions! 🏠

Next time you're exploring the coast, take a closer look at the rocks—you might just spot one of these tiny tidal warriors going about its business. Remember: Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints. 🐾📸

The Ocean’s Playful Acrobats – Cape Fur Seals🌊

Did you know Cape Fur Seals can dive up to 200 meters deep and hold their breath for nearly 8 minutes? These sleek swimmers are nature’s underwater gymnasts, using their powerful flippers to twist, turn, and launch out of the water like pros! 💦🐬

Why Seals Matter
These playful pups aren’t just fun to watch—they play a HUGE role in the marine ecosystem! Seals help keep fish populations balanced and serve as food for larger predators like great white sharks and orcas. But they’re facing some serious threats… 😔

The Hidden Dangers
❌ Fishing Line Entanglements – Discarded lines wrap around their necks, causing deep wounds and infections.
❌ Plastic Box Wire & Bags – Seals mistake floating plastic for food, leading to choking and blockages.
❌ Microplastics – These tiny plastic particles end up in the food chain, harming seals and other marine life.

💙 How You Can Help:
✅ Always pick up fishing line, plastic bags, and other waste at the beach.
✅ Say NO to single-use plastics – every little bit counts!
✅ Join beach clean-ups and spread the word!

Guess who's back? The legend himself—Buffel, the southern elephant seal—has hauled out on Forsyth Beach, Kommetjie! 🏝️ Under the request of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Wildman was on the scene to assess and ensure Buffel's safety and well-being.

Buffel, like all elephant seals, embarks on epic ocean journeys, covering vast distances before stopping along the coast to rest and molt. 💤 This natural process helps them shed old skin and grow a fresh protective layer. During this time, they may seem sluggish, but they’re just doing their thing—so let’s give Buffel the space he needs!

⚠️ Important Reminder:
🐶 Dogs must be kept on a leash—or better yet, avoid the area completely to prevent unnecessary stress or conflict.
👶 Small children should be kept away for their safety and Buffel’s comfort.
🚫 Please respect the wildlife—no approaching, loud noises, or disturbing Buffel while he’s chilling.

🚨 Wildlife Alert: Strandfontein Oil Spill Impact 🚨

The first signs of wildlife being affected by the Strandfontein oil spill are emerging.

🆘 1 Feb 2025 – A deceased, oiled Cape Gannet washed up on Strandfontein Beach, but it was too decomposed to confirm the cause of death.
🆘 2 Feb 2025 – An oiled White-fronted Plover was spotted on the Strandfontein cliffs but has not been caught.

🔎 Why this matters:
Many oiled birds can still fly, making them difficult to recover until they are too weak. CapeNature is monitoring key locations, including Bird Island Nature Reserve in Lamberts Bay, but we fear there may be more undetected impacts on seabirds and marine life.

📢 How You Can Help:
✅ Report sightings of oiled seabirds immediately to SANCCOB:
📞 021 557 6155 (office hours) | 📞 078 638 3731 (after-hours)

🚫 Do NOT handle or attempt to capture birds—trained professionals will respond.

SANCCOB is working tirelessly to protect our seabirds, but more needs to be done. Wildlife response must be a priority!

⭐ Sea Stars, Not Fish!
Did you know starfish aren’t actually fish?
🌊⭐ They’re called sea stars and have no brains or blood!
Instead, they pump seawater through their bodies to move. Talk about efficient! 🚶‍♂️💧

Fun fact: Some starfish have 40 arms, and if they lose one, it grows back. Imagine regenerating limbs like that! 🦾

They may look delicate, but they’re essential for keeping our ocean ecosystems healthy. 💙

Porcupines are some of the most fascinating urban wildlife we share our spaces with—true masters of adaptation in Kommetjie and Cape Town!
These nocturnal creatures have learned to navigate urban zones using the network of underground tunnels and storm water systems, blending the natural world with human-made landscapes.

🌱 What Do Porcupines Eat?
Porcupines are primarily herbivores with a love for roots, bulbs, fruits, and bark. Unfortunately for gardeners, they find vegetable patches irresistible! Sweet potatoes, carrots, and other root veggies are a particular favorite.

🛡️ Nature’s Defense System
Porcupines are equipped with sharp quills that act as their ultimate defense. When threatened, they’ll rattle their quills as a warning. If the predator doesn’t back off, they’ll charge backward, using those quills as a spiky deterrent. Contrary to myth, porcupines can’t “shoot” their quills—but they do detach easily, leaving predators regretting their choices!

🏡 Keeping Them Out of Your Veggie Garden
If you want to protect your vegetable patch while coexisting peacefully with porcupines, here are some tips:
✅ Secure Fencing: Install a sturdy, low fence with buried edges to prevent digging.
✅ Strong Smells: Porcupines dislike strong odors like garlic, chili, or predator urine. Create a natural deterrent by sprinkling these around your garden.
✅ Barrier Plants: Planting thorny bushes or using rough gravel around your garden can make it less inviting.
✅ Alternative Food Sources: Consider planting a “wildlife corner” with native plants that they’ll enjoy, drawing their attention away from your veggies.

🌙 Why We Love Porcupines
These creatures play an important role in the ecosystem, helping to aerate the soil as they dig and disperse seeds through their diet. They’re part of the delicate balance of nature—even in urban zones!

📢 Have porcupine visitors or questions about living with urban wildlife? Reach out to WildMan for expert advice on coexisting with these nocturnal wanderers.

🌊 The Oystercatcher: Icon of Our Shores 🌊

With their striking black feathers and bright orange beaks, African oystercatchers are a beloved sight along our coasts. These coastal guardians feed on mussels, limpets, and other shellfish, playing a vital role in maintaining intertidal ecosystems.

🐦 Did You Know?
• They are monogamous, forming lifelong pair bonds.
• Oystercatchers lay their eggs directly on the beach, making them vulnerable to human and animal disturbance.

⚠️ How You Can Help:
✅ Keep your distance from nesting areas.
✅ Always leash your dogs near the coast.
✅ Avoid driving on beaches where oystercatchers might nest.

By protecting these iconic birds, we ensure the health of our marine environments. Let’s work together to keep our coastal guardians thriving!

Rabies in Cape Fur Seals is a Growing Risk
With rabies now endemic in the Cape Fur Seal population, beachgoers and holidaymakers should exercise caution. The public is strongly advised to avoid close contact with seals .

If you’re a surfer, diver, paddler, or someone who enjoys regular ocean adventures, you’re at higher risk of exposure.
The good news? You can protect yourself!

✅ Get Vaccinated: Rabies vaccines are available at your local clinics or travel clinics. A quick preventative step could save your life.

🐕 For Pets:
Dogs and cats that love the beach are just as vulnerable. Ensure they’re safe by staying up to date with their rabies vaccinations.

✅ Visit Your Vet: Make regular rabies shots a priority to keep your furry friends protected.

⚠️ What to Do If You Spot a Seal:
If you see a Cape fur seal acting strangely or stranded on the beach, remember:
🚫 Do not approach or touch the animal.
📞 Contact local wildlife authorities or organizations like WildMan for assistance.

By taking simple preventative steps, we can reduce the risk to ourselves, our pets, and the wildlife we share this space with. Let’s work together to ensure a safe, thriving coastline for all.

📢 Have questions about rabies and wildlife? Reach out to WildMan—we’re here to help.

12/01/2025

Black Girdled Lizard (Cordylus niger), a remarkable reptile that’s endemic to South Africa! Found exclusively along the rocky outcrops of the Western Cape, these lizards are true masters of their environment.

🌍 Where They Live:
These lizards thrive in rocky coastal areas, such as Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula, where they wedge themselves into crevices for safety. Their habitat is one of the reasons they’re so well-adapted to their surroundings.

🐾 Unique Features:

Their name comes from their dark, almost black coloration and the "girdled" appearance created by their tough, spiny scales.
When threatened, they wedge themselves into tight rock crevices, puff up their bodies, and become nearly impossible for predators to pull out!

🍴 What They Eat:
Black Girdled Lizards are insectivores, feeding on ants, beetles, and other small invertebrates. Occasionally, they’ll snack on plant material.

🌿 Why They Matter:
As part of their ecosystem, these lizards help control insect populations and serve as a food source for predators, playing a crucial role in the balance of nature.

📋 Conservation Status:
These lizards are considered Near Threatened due to habitat loss from urban development in the Cape region. It’s vital to protect their rocky habitats to ensure their survival.

💡 Did You Know?
The Black Girdled Lizard is so unique that its range is limited to just a few areas in South Africa. Protecting its habitat means preserving a species that can’t be found anywhere else on Earth!

Let’s celebrate this incredible species and raise awareness about the importance of conserving their environment!
