Hey Wild ones! 🦀 Today I'm shining the spotlight on the fabulous Ovalipes trimaculatus – our very own three-spotted swimming crab! Did you know these little acrobats sport three distinct spots on their shell? It’s like nature’s way of saying, “Check me out!” 😎💫

Not only do they rock that unique look, but they’re also super speedy swimmers 🏊‍♂️, using their paddle-like legs to glide effortlessly through tide pools. These mini underwater athletes play a crucial role in keeping our coastal ecosystems balanced. 🌊🌴

So next time you're exploring the shore, keep your eyes peeled for these delightful daredevils. They’re a reminder that even the smallest creatures can have a BIG impact on our wild world!

Stay curious, stay wild!🫎

In what can only be described as a scene straight out of a wildlife comedy, Wildman was called upon to rescue a nearly two‐meter-long Mole snake that had decided to take an unscheduled tour of the Catholic Church in Kommetjie. 🐍

⛪The church caretakers, more accustomed to bells and hymns than giant serpents, promptly rang up Wildman. With his trademark calm and a twinkle in his eye, Wildman arrived on the scene, armed with nothing his trusty snake-handling kit and an unshakeable sense of humor.😜

As he carefully extricated the Mole snake from the church grounds, the onlookers couldn’t help but gape in awe. 👀
After the serpentine guest was safely removed and relocated to a more appropriate habitat (we assume the Mole snake will now have a very interesting story to tell its friends), the church returned to its peaceful routine—though a few extra prayers for snake-free sanctuaries were definitely whispered that day.🐍

Did you know that Whale Songs Travel for Miles – Humpback whales are famous for their haunting songs, which can travel up to 3,000 km (1,864 miles) underwater!

💙 Let’s raise awareness. Let’s protect their home. Let’s make waves for change.

🌊 World Whale Day – Know the Giants of the Ocean 🐋

Whales are more than just ocean giants—they are ecosystem engineers and play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy planet. Here’s why they deserve our attention and protection:

🔹 The Largest Animal on Earth – The blue whale can grow up to 30 meters (98 feet) long and weigh 200 tons—that’s heavier than a Boeing 737!

🔹 The Deep Divers – S***m whales can dive over 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) deep and hold their breath for 90 minutes while hunting squid.

🔹 Natural Carbon Warriors – Whales absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide during their lifetime, helping fight climate change. When they pass away, their bodies sink to the ocean floor, storing carbon for centuries.

🔹 Whale Songs Travel for Miles – Humpback whales are famous for their haunting songs, which can travel up to 3,000 km (1,864 miles) underwater!

🔹 They Keep the Ocean Healthy – Whale p**p (yes, really!) fertilizes the ocean, boosting plankton growth, which helps produce 50% of the Earth’s oxygen.

🐋 Whales need our protection. Pollution, climate change, and human interference threaten their existence. This , let’s commit to safeguarding these incredible creatures.

💙 Protect our oceans. Protect our whales. The planet depends on it.

You’ve likely seen the White-breasted Cormorant (Phalacrocorax lucidus) perched on rocky outcrops or gliding just above the waves. This sleek black seabird is one of the ocean’s most efficient fishers and a true icon of South Africa’s coastline.

🔹 Masters of the Dive – These birds can dive up to 25 meters underwater, using their webbed feet to chase fish with incredible speed.

🔹 No Waterproof Feathers? No Problem! – Unlike other water birds, their feathers aren’t fully waterproof, which helps them sink faster while hunting. After a dive, they perch with wings wide open to dry off in the sun.

🔹 Sharp Vision, Sharper Reflexes – Cormorants have exceptional underwater eyesight, allowing them to strike with pinpoint accuracy when catching their next meal.

🔹 Nature’s Balancer – By keeping fish populations in check, these birds play a vital role in maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems.

Spotted a Cormorant lately? Drop a pic in the comments and show some love for these fearless feathered divers! 💙🐦

🌊 The Mighty Periwinkle – Small but Tough! 🐚

Ever spotted those tiny, spiraled shells clinging to rocks along the shore? That’s the Periwinkle, a tough little mollusk built to survive the wildest tides! 🌊💪

These resilient creatures lock themselves onto rocks when the tide goes out, trapping moisture inside their shell to avoid drying out. But when the water returns, they spring back to life, grazing on algae and playing a crucial role in keeping the rocky shore ecosystem balanced. 🌿

Fun fact: Some periwinkles can close their shell with a trapdoor-like lid (called an operculum) to stay safe from predators and harsh conditions! 🏠

Next time you're exploring the coast, take a closer look at the rocks—you might just spot one of these tiny tidal warriors going about its business. Remember: Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints. 🐾📸

The Ocean’s Playful Acrobats – Cape Fur Seals🌊

Did you know Cape Fur Seals can dive up to 200 meters deep and hold their breath for nearly 8 minutes? These sleek swimmers are nature’s underwater gymnasts, using their powerful flippers to twist, turn, and launch out of the water like pros! 💦🐬

Why Seals Matter
These playful pups aren’t just fun to watch—they play a HUGE role in the marine ecosystem! Seals help keep fish populations balanced and serve as food for larger predators like great white sharks and orcas. But they’re facing some serious threats… 😔

The Hidden Dangers
❌ Fishing Line Entanglements – Discarded lines wrap around their necks, causing deep wounds and infections.
❌ Plastic Box Wire & Bags – Seals mistake floating plastic for food, leading to choking and blockages.
❌ Microplastics – These tiny plastic particles end up in the food chain, harming seals and other marine life.

💙 How You Can Help:
✅ Always pick up fishing line, plastic bags, and other waste at the beach.
✅ Say NO to single-use plastics – every little bit counts!
✅ Join beach clean-ups and spread the word!

⚠️ Rabies Alert!
A rabies outbreak has been detected in Cape Fur Seals, while rare, infected seals can become aggressive—so if you see one acting strangely, stay out of the water and report it immediately! 🚨

Guess who's back? The legend himself—Buffel, the southern elephant seal—has hauled out on Forsyth Beach, Kommetjie! 🏝️ Under the request of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Wildman was on the scene to assess and ensure Buffel's safety and well-being.

Buffel, like all elephant seals, embarks on epic ocean journeys, covering vast distances before stopping along the coast to rest and molt. 💤 This natural process helps them shed old skin and grow a fresh protective layer. During this time, they may seem sluggish, but they’re just doing their thing—so let’s give Buffel the space he needs!

⚠️ Important Reminder:
🐶 Dogs must be kept on a leash—or better yet, avoid the area completely to prevent unnecessary stress or conflict.
👶 Small children should be kept away for their safety and Buffel’s comfort.
🚫 Please respect the wildlife—no approaching, loud noises, or disturbing Buffel while he’s chilling.

🚨 Wildlife Alert: Strandfontein Oil Spill Impact 🚨

The first signs of wildlife being affected by the Strandfontein oil spill are emerging.

🆘 1 Feb 2025 – A deceased, oiled Cape Gannet washed up on Strandfontein Beach, but it was too decomposed to confirm the cause of death.
🆘 2 Feb 2025 – An oiled White-fronted Plover was spotted on the Strandfontein cliffs but has not been caught.

🔎 Why this matters:
Many oiled birds can still fly, making them difficult to recover until they are too weak. CapeNature is monitoring key locations, including Bird Island Nature Reserve in Lamberts Bay, but we fear there may be more undetected impacts on seabirds and marine life.

📢 How You Can Help:
✅ Report sightings of oiled seabirds immediately to SANCCOB:
📞 021 557 6155 (office hours) | 📞 078 638 3731 (after-hours)

🚫 Do NOT handle or attempt to capture birds—trained professionals will respond.

SANCCOB is working tirelessly to protect our seabirds, but more needs to be done. Wildlife response must be a priority!
