You are their safety base☝️. Helpful tip #3 🐶🐶
Safety base is essentially when a human has succeeded in becoming the center of the universe for their pet 😊
⠀
When a dog comes back and restores the connection to the human time after time, after exploring the world around and interacting with others. Like a yo-yo.
⠀
When their human is next to them, dogs are more active, playful, exploring the surroundings. When the human is not around, dogs are usually more passive, waiting for them to come back.
There has been research of attachment of puppies and adult dogs.
⠀
Adult dogs would actively explore the room they were taken to, even if their human wasn’t with them, but eventually expressed less and less interest as the room got more familiar. But this is because adult pets are already used to their human leaving home for some time.
⠀
When it comes to puppies, the difference in their behavior when their human was around and gone was quite significant. As soon as the human left the room, they would stop playing or exploring, regardless of the presence of other people.
⠀
But when their “safety base” returned, they resumed playing and exploring.
⠀
It’s important to take this into account in day-to-day life. To know that in your presence, your pet will be more active and braver. Without you around, he/she will tend to be more passive.
⠀
For example, when two dogs are tense during their first meeting, if at least one of their humans approaches, this might cause a fight.
⠀
If you scold an anxious dog for not feeling good when you are not at home (instead of working on this issue using humane methods), you’ll cause your pet even more stress and anxiety.
⠀
Some believe that the number of people a dog can be attached to is limited, but we don’t know this for sure yet.
⠀
What we do know is that dogs can feel attachment to more than one person.
⠀
Our dogs feel safe in the world, if they get support, acceptable, protection and understand from us.
⠀
📍Always be on your dog’s side. Even if there are behavioral issues you might still be struggling with.
