Sad post: 2 kitties, both unfortunately deceased.

Tues 4 Feb - ginger cat brought in, quite bad condition, no microchip or collar, sadly died with us shortly after arrival. Found Duckitt Ave, Constantia.

Weds 5 Feb - tortoiseshell cat presumably hit by car, no microchip or collar. Found Brommersvlei Rd, Constantia.

Naughty Labrador, Cadbury, came to see the vet as he was feeling under the weather and had lost his appetite (a Labrador without an appetite is very unusual!) Turns out he had eaten a plastic shopping bag which he fortunately managed to vomit up. Cadbury will make a full recovery and his owners are now extra vigilant of his strange eating habits. 🐕

Summer is here! ☀️

𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵:

• On hot days, keep pets indoors where it’s cool.
• Never leave your pet in the car!
• Ensure your pets always have access to fresh water.
• Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day; instead, opt for early morning or late evening walks.
• Be cautious of hot surfaces; paws can get burned. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them.
• Provide plenty of shade and fresh water for your pets.
• Use pet sunscreen on those with short or light coats, focusing on sensitive areas like ear tips, noses, and sparsely covered spots.
• Watch for signs of heat stroke, such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or vomiting. If you suspect heat stroke, cool your pet with water, move them to a shaded area, and contact a vet immediately.
• Short-muzzled breeds, as well as older or overweight dogs are at a higher risk for heat stroke.

There are some changes happening at Alphen Vet! 👷🏻

We are thrilled to announce that we will be undergoing renovations to enhance our practice and provide even better care for your beloved pets. These much-needed upgrades include improvements to our hospital facilities and the creation of a dedicated cat ward, ensuring a more comfortable experience for our feline patients.

The renovations commence on Monday morning, 20 January. We are excited about these changes, but we understand that construction can be disruptive. If your pet is sensitive to noise, please don’t hesitate to talk to us – we’ll do everything we can to minimise stress and keep them comfortable during this time.

UPDATE - all 3 kittens have been homed!❤️

3 beautiful kittens (2 boys, 1 girl) looking for their forever homes. Brought to us after being found in a box, presumably dumped. They are approximately 4/5weeks old at present and will be ready to go in a few weeks. They have been tested for all the nasties and are healthy and well, and getting more confident by the hour!

Every patient counts, even a child's beloved 'puppy' and 'hamster'. Nurse Jani ensured that the special pets were in good health, checking hearts and ears, and gave some advice on care to their young owner. 🙂
