Colder months brings with it many challenges for livestock producers, in particular, 𝐏𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚. 🐂🐑

☢️ C͟A͟U͟S͟E͟S͟
• Common bacteria: 𝑀𝘢𝑛𝘯ℎ𝘦𝑖𝘮𝑖𝘢 𝘩𝑎𝘦𝑚𝘰𝑙𝘺𝑡𝘪𝑐𝘢, 𝑃𝘢𝑠𝘵𝑒𝘶𝑟𝘦𝑙𝘭𝑎 𝑚𝘶𝑙𝘵𝑜𝘤𝑖𝘥𝑎, 𝘏𝑖𝘴𝑡𝘰𝑝𝘩𝑖𝘭𝑢𝘴 𝘴𝑜𝘮𝑛𝘪, 𝐵𝘪𝑏𝘦𝑟𝘴𝑡𝘦𝑖𝘯𝑖𝘢 𝘵𝑟𝘦ℎ𝘢𝑙𝘰𝑠𝘦.

Wet weather means increased risk of 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐭 (𝐯𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐣𝐢𝐞) 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐩. ☔️🐑

Footrot (𝘋𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘯𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘴) is an infectious and contagious disease that can cause lameness in your flock as it attacks by digesting the connective tissue between the horn and flesh of the hoof, and also under the horn of the foot.

It 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐮𝐝. Moist pastures, laneways and muddy yards are the main areas where footrot is spread and 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫.

Prevention includes hoof cutting (especially before foot rot season), foot baths with zinc sulphate, drying of muddy areas, removing animals from infected pastures for 2 weeks, zinc sulphate supplements and culling of infected animals.
