๐Ÿšจ African Horse Sickness - Now is the time to vaccinate!

According to the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, AHS is a notifiable viral disease "that affects all equines and is often fatal".

The low-risk season, which runs from 1 June - 31 October, is when vaccinations should be administered. ๐ŸŽ

Out of all the ๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ that sheep are susceptible to, ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฉ๐ฒ ๐Š๐ข๐๐ง๐ž๐ฒ (๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜‹) is the most common. It is a serious threat to unvaccinated sheep and almost all cases are fatal despite treatment.

๐–๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐œ๐จ๐ซ๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐ฏ๐š๐œ๐œ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ž๐ฐ๐ž๐ฌ, ๐ง๐ž๐ฐ๐›๐จ๐ซ๐ง ๐ฅ๐š๐ฆ๐›๐ฌ ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ค๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฆ. ๐Ÿ‘

Lambs and previously unvaccinated adult sheep are given 2 doses, 6 weeks apart, followed by annual vaccination of vaccine containing the required strains of ๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ. Ewes should receive a booster 2-6 weeks before lambing to ensure passive protection of the lambs through colostrum. Lambs can be vaccinated from 2 weeks old, regardless of the dam's status.

Other diseases caused by clostridia in sheep (as well as cattle) are:
- Enterotoxaemia, haemorrhagic enteritis (๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜ˆ)
- Necrotic enteritis (๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜Š)

Another threat to consider is ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ด in sheep and goats.
