Activity keeps your dog healthy and happy, preventing boredom and obesity. In winter, it maintains mental stimulation and helps burn excess energy, crucial for avoiding behavioral issues and ensuring overall well-being.

When Pluto visited us for his dental procedure recently, we noticed something interesting!
One of his incisors had a bifid crown. This relatively rare abnormality develops when a single tooth germ attempts to divide into two separate teeth, called a โgemini toothโ. The process is known as gemination, or โ a term we may be more familiar with โ twinning!
With gemination, the number of teeth remains normal if the large abnormal tooth is regarded as a single tooth.
Gemination has been described to occur with increased frequency in Boxers compared with other breeds of dogs, which makes Pluto, a German Shorthaired Pointer, even more special!

This year, our staff are participating in a mass cat sterilisation project for Capetonians Against Animal Abuse - CAAA! Over the past few months, we've been raising funds for our ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐๐๐ญ, which is happening this Saturday, 13 July 2024.
Several companies have also contributed to the project, with a special mention to Purina ProPlan. For every bag of Purina ProPlan dog or cat sold at Durbanville Animal Hospital on Saturday 13 July 2024, they will donate the same to the welfare organisations we support.
And to make sure we have a festive atmosphere, they have also arranged for a coffee truck on the day! Please come out and support our initiative this Saturday!
A big thank you to all our sponsors - without you, this initiative would not have been possible.

With Winter approaching, the snails are having a ball in our garden. And they are grossโฆ so the temptation exists to get rid of them.
๐๐๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ณ๐๐น โ many snail baits contain the toxin metaldehyde, which our dogs find very tasty. So when young Chase explored the garage and came across a package, he could not resist taking a bite. Luckily for Chase, his human saw what happened and immediately phoned our vets. Whilst on the phone, Chase started twitching. Thanks to everyoneโs quick actions, Dr Alet managed to give Chase a drug to make him vomit barely 20 minutes after eating the snail bait. The telltale blue tinge to the vomit confirmed the diagnosis without a shadow of a doubt!
Chase spent a few hours in hospital on an intravenous drip to make sure that the poisoning was contained and by the next day, he was his normal mischievous self again!
If you suspect your pet has ingested metaldehyde, it is crucial to act quickly and follow these steps:
1. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately. Time is of the essence in treating metaldehyde intoxication.
2. Do not induce vomiting unless specifically instructed to do so by a veterinarian, as this can sometimes cause more harm than good.
3. If possible, bring the packaging or label of the product containing metaldehyde with you to the veterinary clinic. This will help the veterinarian determine the appropriate course of treatment.
4. Treatment may include the administration of activated charcoal to help bind the toxin and prevent further absorption into the bloodstream.
5. Intravenous fluid therapy may be necessary to help maintain hydration and support kidney function.
6. Medications to control seizures and muscle tremors may be administered, as well as medications to protect the liver.
7. In severe cases, hospitalisation and close monitoring may be required until the pet is stable and showing signs of recovery.
8. To prevent future incide
Hudson had a long journey from the Northern Province to his new home in Durbanville, but, unbeknownst to his new owners, he was not aloneโฆ
His owners noticed small lumps on his body. His human brothers, who both aspire to become veterinarians one day, investigated. As they squeezed one of the lumps, something popped out. This freaked out the amateur vets and they brought Hudson to see Dr Marike. Dr Marike quickly ascertained that this was a Tumbu Fly larval infestation โ something that does not usually occur in the Western Cape. The Tumbu fly, also known as the Mango fly, lays her eggs on clothing, nappies or bedding material. The eggs hatch and the larvae wait until they come into contact with skin. They then burrow into the skin, which becomes a nodule as the larva matures into the pupa which becomes the adult fly. Most veterinarians in the Western Cape have learnt about this parasite during their studies, but very few have seen it in real life, as it mostly occurs in tropical climates.
For Hudson, the main treatment consisted of โpoppingโ out these larvae from their hiding places and disinfecting the lesions. As the flies do not naturally occur in our region, we are hopeful that this should not happen again!

Micah, the big German Shepherd dog forgotten in the shelter, finally found his loving home at the ripe old age of 8 years. But despite his happiness, he appeared to be a lazy dog. When he walked, he dragged his feet โ ๐ฝ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ถ๐. He was happy to sleep in a corner, away from his adopted sibling. ๐ป๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐
๐๐ถ๐๐๐น.
During his recent wellness check, our vet discussed the possibility of osteoarthritis with his owner. Recently, a new treatment option has become available to dogs in South Africa, a revolutionary monthly injection, named ๐๐ข๐๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐, which blocks the protein responsible for triggering pain in individuals with arthritis. This biological treatment functions similarly to your dogโs natural immune system and alleviates pain for a full month. Worldwide, over five million doses have been administered and have helped pets everywhere.
A month later, Micah trotted into the consulting room, dragging his dad behind him. The difference was remarkable! He plays. He tries to steal his siblingโs food. โฅ ๐๐ฎ ๐ป๐พ๐ท๐ผโฆโฅ

Young Bella was flapping her ears so much that she could almost take off like a bird!
Our vet examined her ears using an otoscope, which is an instrument to look deep into the ear. Bellaโs ears were very dirty and Dr Madrรฉ collected a sample to examine under the microscope.
Bella had an infestation of ๐๐ฉ๐ค๐๐๐๐ฉ๐๐จ ๐๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ค๐ฉ๐๐จ, or ear mites, which is quite common in puppies. Ear mites cause intense itchiness and irritation as these critters crawl around in the ear canals.
Luckily, many of our modern flea and tick formulations can also treat ear mites, such as Bravecto and Revolution. No more itchy ears for Bella - she can focus on just being a puppy again!
