As the temperatures in South Africa rise and we are prone to more heatwaves this summer, it's important to remember that pets are just as vulnerable to heatstroke as we are. On those scorching hot days, let’s keep our furry friends safe and cool. Here’s how you can protect them:
🐾 Provide Plenty of Water: Always have fresh water available, and make sure your pets are drinking regularly and have a shady spot to lie in.
🐾 Keep Them Cool: Shade, fans, and air conditioning are essential—never leave pets in hot, enclosed spaces like cars.
🐾 Limit Exercise: Avoid long walks or outdoor play during peak heat hours (usually between 10 am and 4 pm).
🐾 Cool Down: Use a damp towel on your pet’s body or let them play in a kiddie pool to help lower their body temperature.
Signs of Heatstroke to watch out for are excessive panting or drooling, vomiting or diarrhea, lethargy or confusion, red or pale gums.
