Doggos love festive biscuits too. But it’s important to ensure that these treats do
not contain ingredients that are harmful to your pets. This is why we’re sharing this
guilt-free (good for dogs) recipe for you to try.

Ingredients
• 1/2 cup natural peanut butter - no added salt, sugar or xylitol
• 1 cup steamed pumpkin

Directions

Step 1: Gather all your ingredients.
Step 2: Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celsius.
Step 3: In a large bowl, stir together peanut butter and pumpkin. Stir in the
flour bit by bit until the dough is no longer sticky.
Step 4: Roll the dough.
Step 5: Cut into pieces with a dog bone-shaped cookie cutter.
Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven for about 8-10 minutes until the dog treats are
golden brown and crunchy.
Step 7: Let the treats cool before serving your pet.

With the silly season finally here, we’ve got some tips to get your fur babies into the festive spirit.

1. They deserve decorations too. Make your pet’s space festive by adding a bowl of their favourite treats or even their own stocking filled with tennis balls or toys.

2. It’s the only time of year that we don’t mind them playing with gift wrapping. So use your left-over wrapping paper to cover an empty cardboard box for your pet to shred.

3. Hang mistletoe and kiss your animal baby every time you’re under it.

4. Dress them up in a festive outfit. You could put on some reindeer horns or even a red bow tied to their collar.

5. Make sure they have the best holiday by being tick and flea-free with our SerestoTM collar.

Having a dog approaching the older stages of its life can be difficult for both the owner and the animal, but knowing how to make your pet comfortable can go a long way for their wellness and for your peace of mind. So here are some tips on how to make your senior pets more comfortable.

1. Keep their brains and bodies active by taking them for short walks and having them do stimulating activities like finding hidden pellets and giving them lick mats.

2. Adjust their diets to their age. Consult your vet about the diet options available for senior pets.

3. If they are losing their eyesight be sure to move any sharp objects out of their way.

4. Senior animals may experience increased sound sensitivity, so be sure to keep them inside during thunderstorms and if there are fireworks being set off.

Who said only human’s need pampering? We’ve got some DIY ideas to give
your feline friend the home spa treatment they deserve.

1. Brush your cat’s fur to stop fur matting and improve circulation.

2. If you need to bath your cat, use a pet friendly shampoo and possibly bring along a treat or two in order to regain their love. (Only do this if you have bathed your cat in the past or trained it to be bathed as a kitten.)

3. Have a scratching post to help maintain their nails or clip them every so often by pressing down on their paw, then gently clipping the nail. However be sure to not cut on the red or pink area of the claws.

4. Brush your cat’s teeth with pet friendly toothpaste.

5. Tell them how beautiful they are.

Now it’s your turn. We would like to hear your home spa tips and how you make your fur baby feel loved.

This month, our focus is on wellness.

Diet plays a major role in your health and the health of your pup. We took a look at some healthy foods that you both can share, hopefully from different bowls 😉. Treats should only make up 10% of your dog’s daily diet. Like humans, dogs are prone to allergies so consult a vet before feeding your dogs any foods you are unsure of. Tell us which foods you share with your furry friends in the comments below.

Plaas Media attended the University of Pretoria's final year animal science students' seminar finals this morning.

The students have been preparing their seminars since April this year. The seminars will be discussed in-depth in an AgriOrbit article that will be published later this week, so keep an eye on the website and page.

Eight students participated in the finals today in three disciplines, each with a unique topic. They are:

• Christian de Jager, physiology, the effect of double muscling on the production and fitness traits of cattle.

• Sanchia Strijdom, physiology, the effect of mastitis on the reproductive performance of dairy cattle.

• Jennifer-Lee O'Donovan, animal breeding and genetics, selection challenges in domesticated dogs: a dichotomy between function traits and human inclinations.

• Johan Wilsenach, animal breeding and genetics, a review of heartwater disease in livestock and wildlife in South Africa.

• Paul Verwey, monogastric nutrition, the effect of seaweed-derived polysaccharides and extracts on broiler immunity development and growth performance.

• Kean Jacobs, monogastric nutrition, an outlook on broiler production amid the possible antibiotic growth promoter ban and the movement towards more sustainable production: reviewing potential alternative strategies.

• Stefan Corbett, ruminant nutrition, using goats to control bush encroachment.

• Mion Schoeman, ruminant nutrition, nutritional manipulation to control haemonchus contortus in goats.

The winner of the seminars will be announced tomorrow night at the final year student's gala dinner. So be sure to keep an eye on our page to find out who the winner is, and also to find out which team of the group won the broiler challenge, and wrote the best popular article for about poultry!

Don’t let your four-legged friend suffer in silence! Neglected skin
problems can spiral out of control. Here are some signs that could help identify potential skin issues that your pet may have.

1. If you notice your pet scratching, biting or licking their skin too much, it could indicate skin irritation or an underlying problem.
2. Dry, flaky skin can be a sign of poor skin health. It may be caused by factors like nutritional deficiencies, allergies or environmental factors.
3. Keep an eye out for areas where the fur appears thinner or bald patches are forming, as excessive hair loss and patches could indicate an underlying skin condition.
4. If you pick up any unusual smells coming from your pet’s skin,
especially if it continues despite regular grooming, your pet may have an infection or skin problem.
5. Inspect your pet’s skin regularly for any signs of abnormalities such as redness, rashes, bumps, lumps or wounds. These often indicate allergies, infections or parasite infestations.

Remember to seek assistance from your vet once spotting any of these signs so they can help you take care of your pet’s skin problems.

15/09/2023

Just like humans, your pet’s skin needs attention and care to keep it healthy. Take a look at our basic skincare tips to help you keep your pet’s skin and coat in a great condition. We would love to hear any skincare tips you follow that have come in handy for your pet. Share them in the comments.

Oral hygiene is important for an overall healthy pet. Many dogs tend to show signs of dental illness at an early age. These are often caused by plaque and tartar, which if left untreated leads to gingivitis, a condition of inflamed gums, and tooth loss. This is why starting an oral hygiene routine earlier is essential.
